Factors influencing junior high school students' perceptions of attending school in Japan.

Background: School attendance is a crucial determinant of academic success. Our previous research has identified factors that influence elementary school students' perceptions of attending school, but whether these factors apply to older students remains unclear. We investigated the extent to which the factors identified in the previous research apply to junior high school students and their attitudes toward attending school.

Participation-related constructs and participation of children with additional support needs in schools.

Aim: To investigate associations between participation-related constructs and participation frequency and involvement in inclusive schools.

Method: In this cross-sectional study, teachers of children with additional support needs, including intellectual disability, autism, and learning difficulties, completed measures. Participation-related constructs were measured using the School Participation Questionnaire; participation frequency and involvement were measured using the Participation and Environment Measure for Children and Youth.

Psychometric properties of the School Participation Questionnaire: Testing a measure of participation-related constructs.

Aim: To explore concurrent validity, convergent validity, interrater reliability, test-retest reliability, and Rasch model analysis of the School Participation Questionnaire (SPQ), a tool for teachers to assess personal and environmental determinants of school participation.

Methods: We used best-worst scaling (BWS) and composite time trade-off (cTTO) to determine the preference weights for ASCOT-Carer states in the general population. TTO values were applied to convert the BWS scores to utilities.

Background: Managing school nonattendance is a priority worldwide. Frequent school nonattendance in early school years has immediate and long-term negative effects. Although strategies to address nonattendance are being developed and implemented, the number of students with school nonattendance issues is increasing.

Development, psychometrics and feasibility of the School Participation Questionnaire: A teacher measure of participation related constructs.

Background: We report development of the SPQ (School Participation Questionnaire) a teacher-completed measure of participation related constructs for schools. The SPQ was developed to support participation-related assessment, interventions, and research in the inclusive school context.

Background: The aim of this study was to develop and perform cross-cultural validation of a Japanese version of the Adult Social Care Outcomes Toolkit (ASCOT) four-level Self-Completion questionnaire (SCT4) instrument to measure Social-Care Related Quality of Life. It was important to develop a Japanese version of the ASCOT-SCT4 and validate it in the Japanese context, given the interest in measuring outcomes of social care services in Japan.

Methods: The original version of ASCOT-SCT4 was translated into Japanese following good practice guidelines.

Participation of children with disabilities in school: A realist systematic review of psychosocial and environmental factors.

Background: In order to make informed decisions about how best to support children and young people with disabilities, effective strategies that facilitate active and meaningful participation in school are required. Clinical factors, diagnosis or impairments somewhat helpful in determining what should be provided in interventions. However, clinical factors alone will not offer a clear view of how to support participation.

Anxiety, fatigue, and attentional bias toward threat in patients with hematopoietic tumors.

Cancer patients with hematopoietic tumors exhibit particularly high rates of anxiety disorders and depression, and often develop negative affect. In addition, psychological problems experienced by cancer patients impair their quality of life. When cancer patients feel anxious, they tend to direct their attention toward stimuli associated with threat in the surrounding environment.

Assessing interests in Japanese elders: a descriptive study.

This study investigated use of the Japanese Interest Checklist for the Elderly (JICE). An interview that followed administration of the checklist illuminated the reasons for interests among 65 participants. Examining the reasons behind levels of interest is a potential avenue of research that may add to our understanding of the nature of interests.

International efforts to disseminate and develop the model of human occupation.

This paper documents efforts in Canada, France, Finland, Germany, Hispanoamerica, Israel, Japan, The Netherlands, and Taiwan to disseminate the Model of Human Occupation (MOHO). We aim to characterize the challenges involved, the strategies used, and the impact of these efforts in diverse cultural and social conditions.
