Ultrasonographic diagnosis of cystitis glandularis with severe intestinal metaplasia.

This study presents the case of man who underwent ultrasonography (US) for the diagnosis and follow-up of cystitis glandularis with severe intestinal metaplasia. We believe that our study makes a significant contribution to the literature because the findings of cystitis glandularis that forms a mass is relatively rare.

A Case of Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis in Central Precocious Puberty Aggravated by Gonadotropin-releasing Hormone Analog.

We report the case of a girl with central precocious puberty (CPP) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) aggravated by gonadotropin-releasing hormone analog (GnRHa). She was diagnosed with CCP and began treatment with GnRHa at the age of 8 years and 9 months. She already had mild liver dysfunction and was obese at that time; however, liver dysfunction was aggravated during GnRHa initiation.

Pneumatosis Cystoides Intestinalis Secondary to Sunitinib Treatment for Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor.

A 67-year-old man with liver and retroperitoneal metastases from a gastrointestinal stromal tumor arising in the jejunum had been administered oral sunitinib for 2 months. He presented to our department with right-sided lower abdominal pain. His general condition was good, with no high-grade fever, and the other vital signs were also stable.

Mechanism underlying the negative effect of prostate volume on the outcome of extensive transperineal ultrasound-guided template prostate biopsy.

Previous studies have indicated a possible relationship between increased prostate volume (PV) and decreased biopsy yield, although the mechanism involved is unclear. We evaluated 1650 patients who underwent template biopsy. The distribution of 993 cancer lesions in 302 prostatectomy specimens was compared with the biopsy data to determine whether each lesion was detected.

Potential influence of interleukin-6 on the therapeutic effect of gefitinib in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer harbouring EGFR mutations.

Although epidermal growth factor receptor-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs) are a key therapy used for patients with EGFR-mutant non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), some of whom do not respond well to its therapy. Cytokine including IL-6 secreted by tumour cells is postulated as a potential mechanism for the primary resistance or low sensitivity to EGFR-TKIs. Fifty-two patients with advanced EGFR-mutant NSCLC who had received gefitinib were assessed retrospectively.

Imprint cytology of clear cell sarcoma-like tumor of the gastrointestinal tract in the small intestine: A case report.

Clear cell sarcoma-like tumor of the gastrointestinal tract (CCSLGT) is an extremely rare malignant neoplasm in the digestive tract. Its cytomorphologic features have never previously been reported. Here, we describe a case of CCSLGT, including its cytologic examination findings.

[A case of Takayasu's arteritis detected in a patient with Crohn's disease following infliximab treatment].

A 19-year-old male with diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, and elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) levels was admitted to our hospital. Endoscopic examination and small intestinal contrast radiography revealed multiple longitudinal ulcers in the large intestine and ileum. A specimen biopsied from one of these ulcers revealed non-caseating epithelioid cell granuloma.

Efficacy of multimodal treatment for leptomeningeal metastases in a lung cancer harboring an EGFR mutation.

For lung cancer patients with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations, the advent of EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) has prolonged survival rates. Even though disease sites have been well controlled by EGFR-TKIs, some patients develop carcinomatous meningitis, which reduces their quality of life drastically. Although multidisciplinary approaches have improved patient survival and quality of life, the outcomes are not yet satisfactory.

Short-term low-volume hydration in cisplatin-based chemotherapy for patients with lung cancer: the second prospective feasibility study in the Okayama Lung Cancer Study Group Trial 1201.

Objective: We previously reported the feasibility of short-term low-volume hydration in patients with advanced lung cancer who received cisplatin-based chemotherapy (Jpn J Clin Oncol 2013). We sought to determine the clinical usefulness of a more convenient hydration method, evaluating the safety and efficacy of shorter-term and lower-volume hydration.

Method: Chemonaïve patients with advanced lung cancer who were ≤ 75 years and reserved an adequate renal function for cisplatin use (≥ 60 mg/m(2)) were eligible.

Immunohistochemical characterization of renal tumors in patients with Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome.

Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome (BHD) is an autosomal dominant disorder associated with a germline mutation of folliculin (FLCN). The affected families are at a high risk for developing multiple renal cell carcinomas (RCC). Little is known about the immunostaining patterns of mutant FLCN-associated RCCs.

Validity and reproducibility of Ki-67 assessment in gastrointestinal stromal tumors and leiomyosarcomas.

With the aim of standardizing Ki-67 immunohistochemistry, we assessed interobserver and interlaboratory variability of the Ki-67 labeling index and Ki-67 score among eight general pathologists for 24 gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) and 12 leiomyosarcomas, which were predominantly of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, mesentery and retroperitoneum, based on a review of a tissue microarrays subjected to immunohistochemistry with antibodies for Ki-67. For Ki-67 immunostaining of mesenchymal tumors of the GI tract, including GISTs, differences were seen in the scores given by regional hospitals. Conversely, for two categories of the Ki-67 labeling index, namely <10% and ≥10%, concordance of the Ki-67 score between microscopic observation and image analysis, and between the observers, was good, but it was not good for the other four categories of the index for <5%, 5-9%, 10-29%, and ≥30%.

A-63-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of epigastralgia. On gastrointestinal fiberscopy, a complete obstruction of the pylorus was found, and endoscopic biopsy specimens from this region revealed gastric small cell carcinoma. CT scans showed the primary tumor at the pylorus with many regional lymph node metastases invading the pancreas.

Pulmonary cysts of Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome: a clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical study of 9 families.

Birt-Hogg-Dubé (BHD) syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by fibrofolliculomas, renal tumors, and pulmonary cysts with recurrent pneumothorax. Multiple pulmonary cysts and pneumothorax are the key signs for diagnosing BHD syndrome. The pathologic features of BHD pulmonary cysts, however, are poorly understood.

Review of juxtaglomerular cell tumor with focus on pathobiological aspect.

Juxtaglomerular cell tumor (JGCT) generally affects adolescents and young adults. The patients experience symptoms related to hypertension and hypokalemia due to renin-secretion by the tumor. Grossly, the tumor is well circumscribed with fibrous capsule and the cut surface shows yellow or gray-tan color with frequent hemorrhage.

Differences in tumor core distribution between palpable and nonpalpable prostate tumors in patients diagnosed using extensive transperineal ultrasound-guided template prostate biopsy.

Background: The authors performed extensive transperineal ultrasound-guided template prostate biopsies to investigate carcinoma core distribution.

Methods: Between August 2000 and May 2004, 371 men underwent template biopsies. Three hundred twelve patients had not undergone a previous biopsy (first group) and 59 had undergone previous transrectal sextant biopsies (repeat group).
