Article Synopsis
  • The paper discusses the use of quartz microbalance and silicon-based microcantilever sensors to detect volatile organic compounds (VOCs) through the application of crystalline metal-organic framework (MOF) thin films.
  • Two types of MOF thin films were developed on gold electrodes using COOH-terminated self-assembled monolayers, enhancing the sensors' capability to concentrate VOC gases.
  • The frequency changes in the weight-detectable sensors indicate the adsorption and desorption of VOCs, while the MOF layers ensure selectivity by allowing only specific VOCs to be adsorbed based on their size.

We demonstrate a simple route to depositing nickel layer patterns using photocross-linked polymer thin films containing palladium catalysts, which can be used as adhesive interlayers for fabrication of nickel patterns on glass and plastic substrates. Electroless nickel patterns can be obtained in three steps: (i) the pattern formation of partially quaterized poly(vinyl pyridine) by UV irradiation, (ii) the formation of macromolecular metal complex with palladium, and (iii) the nickel metallization using electroless plating bath. Metallization is site-selective and allows for a high resolution.
