Background: Little is known about predictive factors for survival outcomes of esophageal carcinoma (EC) patients who developed recurrence after undergoing multimodal therapies. We aimed to investigate long-term outcomes and identify prognostic factors in patients with relapsed EC, focusing especially on those with oligometastasis (OM).

Methods: EC patients who developed recurrence after curative treatments (radical esophagectomy or definitive chemoradiotherapy (dCRT)) between 2010 and 2017 were reviewed.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study assessed the effectiveness and safety of combining radiation therapy with atezolizumab for bladder cancer treatment in patients who couldn't undergo surgery.
  • - Out of 45 patients treated, 84.4% achieved a pathologic complete response (pCR), especially in older adults and those with high PD-L1 tumor expression.
  • - While 93.3% experienced side effects, mostly mild to moderate ones like diarrhea, the overall results suggest that this combination therapy may be a viable option for preserving the bladder.

Background: The significance of metastasis-directed therapy for oligometastatic prostate cancer has been widely discussed, and targeted therapy for progressive sites is a feasible option as a multidisciplinary treatment for castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). When oligometastatic CRPC with only bone metastases progresses after targeted therapy, it tends to progress as multiple bone metastases. The progression of oligometastatic CRPC after targeted therapy may be due in part to the presence of micrometastatic lesions that, though undetected on imaging, were present prior to targeted therapy.

Article Synopsis
  • A study analyzed the effectiveness of different methods for assessing breast cosmetic outcomes after breast-conserving therapy (BCT) in Asian women, focusing on a specific software program called BCCT.core.
  • Out of 306 women, 292 were evaluated using institutional assessment and the BCCT.core program, comparing pre- and post-treatment results through photographs.
  • The findings indicated that the BCCT.core method had good agreement between evaluations from experts and non-experts, suggesting it is a reliable way to assess cosmetic results in clinical trials.

There are currently no reliable, established serum biomarkers to predict the prognosis of radiotherapy for advanced cervical cancer. We aimed to identify serum biomarkers for survival after radiotherapy for cervical cancer. In this multicenter prospective cohort study, the usefulness of pre- and posttreatment serum protein levels of potential biomarkers, including squamous cell carcinoma antigen (SCC-Ag), apolipoprotein C-II (ApoC-II), matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)1, and MMP2, were evaluated together with clinical factors in 145 cervical cancer patients in order to determine their suitability to predict survival.

Objective: To investigate the incidence of colorectal cancer and chronic radiation proctitis after prostate radiotherapy using periodic total colonoscopy screening.

Methods: From February 2013 to January 2018, 270 patients who underwent external beam radiation therapy for prostate cancer were advised to receive periodic total colonoscopy screening annually. We evaluated the incidence and characteristics of colorectal cancer and chronic radiation proctitis.

Radical cystectomy (RC) is recommended for muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) or highest-risk non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). Trimodal therapy (TMT) is the most favorable strategy among bladder preservation therapies (BPT) for patients who are ineligible for or refuse RC. However, referrals for TMT, especially following chemotherapy, are limited by the patient's condition.

The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of planning dose-volume histogram (DVH) parameters in computed tomography-based 3D image-guided brachytherapy for locally advanced cervical cancer. In a prospective multi-institutional study, 60 patients with stage IIA2-IVA cervical cancer from eight institutions were treated with external beam radiotherapy using central shielding and intracavitary or hybrid (combined intracavitary/interstitial) brachytherapy (HBT). The dose constraints were set as a cumulative linear quadratic equivalent dose (EQD2) of at least 60 Gy for high-risk clinical target volume (HR-CTV) D90, D2cc ≤ 75 Gy for rectum, D2cc ≤ 90 Gy for bladder and D2cc ≤ 75 Gy for sigmoid.

This study aimed to research the post-treatment quality of life (QOL) between radiotherapy (RT)- and operation (OP)-treated early cervical cancer survivors, using separate questionnaires for physicians and patients. We administered an observational questionnaire to patients aged 20-70 years old with Stages IB1-IIB cervical cancer who had undergone RT or OP and without recurrence as outpatients for ≥6 months after treatment. We divided 100 registered patients equally into two treatment groups (n = 50 each).

This study aimed to assess the long-term outcomes of radiotherapy in patients with localized gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. Twenty-seven patients with Stage I gastric MALT lymphoma were treated with radiotherapy from 1999 to 2010. The median age was 65 years (range: 31-84).

The mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) correlates with cell survival under hypoxia and regulates hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), a key protein in hypoxia-related events. However, the role of mTOR in radio-resistance has not been fully investigated. Therefore, the effect of mTOR on the radio-resistance of cancer cells under hypoxia was evaluated using the mTOR inhibitor temsirolimus.
