Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the optimal timing for intubating COVID-19 patients and the effectiveness of high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) therapy, focusing on failure rates associated with delayed treatment.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 122 patients, finding that 13.9% experienced HFNC failure, with significant differences in initial oxygenation levels between failure and non-failure groups.
  • The study identifies a 10% increase in lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and interleukin (IL)-6 levels, along with persistent SARS-CoV-2 RNAemia, as indicators of higher risk for HFNC failure, emphasizing the importance of early intervention.

The adverse events extracted from this national database included events associated with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation reported between January 2010 and December 2021.
