There is no established treatment for lung adenocarcinoma with uncommon/compound epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations. We report a case of a 73-year-old man with stage IVB lung adenocarcinoma harboring E709G and L861Q EGFR mutations. After 2 months of afatinib treatment, significant tumor shrinkage was observed, and the patient's condition remained stable for 1 year.

Background: The basophil activation test (BAT) has high sensitivity and specificity for diagnosing Hymenoptera venom allergy and is useful for predicting the clinical sensitivity of bee venom-allergic patients after venom immunotherapy. Patients sensitized to Hymenoptera venom are at risk for systemic reactions (SRs) to subsequent stings. Therefore, a tool that can predict the occurrence of SRs and the severity of Hymenoptera stings is needed.

In our country, overlooking and failing to communicate the results of imaging examinations and pathological examinations to patients is a problem. This is because it affects the prognosis of the patients. With the introduction of this system, the situation improved within six months, so this system was useful.

Plant phenotypes caused by mineral deficiencies differ depending on growth conditions. We recently reported that the growth of Arabidopsis thaliana was severely inhibited on MGRL-based zinc (Zn)-deficient medium but not on Murashige-Skoog-based Zn-deficient medium. Here, we explored the underlying reason for the phenotypic differences in Arabidopsis grown on the different media.

Article Synopsis
  • A multispecies outbreak of IMP-6 carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (IMP-6-CPE) occurred at a hospital in Japan, affecting 22 patients between July 2013 and March 2014.
  • The study used various molecular techniques to track the transmission of the bacteria and identified risk factors associated with acquiring IMP-6-CPE, particularly in patients undergoing specific surgical procedures.
  • Genomic analysis indicated the presence of a shared 50-kb plasmid across most samples, suggesting gene transfer between species and aiding in understanding how the outbreak spread among affected patients.

Measles is a highly contagious infection caused by the measles virus (MV). This study performed long-term surveillance in order to survey the prevalence of MV. A total of 417 patients diagnosed with or suspected of having measles were tested for MV between January 2007 and December 2016 in Osaka City, Japan.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is an acute febrile illness characterized by fever; sore throat; and vesicular eruptions on the hands, feet, and oral mucosa. Until 2010, HFMD was predominantly associated with enterovirus (EV) A71 and coxsackievirus (CV) A16 in Japan. In 2011, CV-A6 emerged as a primary causative agent, causing the largest HFMD epidemic in Japan since 1981.

[Objective] To contribute to countermeasures against pulmonary tuberculosis in patients with HIV infection through analyzing and evaluating its treatment outcomes and patient management. [Methods] The 'subjects were pulmonary tuberculosis patients newly registered between 2008 and 2014 in whom concomitant HIV infection was detected. For the control, sex- and generation-matched pulmonary tuberculosis patients newly registered in Osaka City -between 2012 and 2014 were adopted.

The freshwater planarian Dugesia japonica has recently emerged as an animal model for developmental neurotoxicology and found to be sensitive to organophosphorus (OP) pesticides. While previous activity staining of D. japonica, which possess a discrete cholinergic nervous system, has shown acylthiocholine catalysis, it is unknown whether this is accomplished through an acetylcholinesterase (AChE), butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), or a hybrid esterase and how OP exposure affects esterase activity.

Objectives: To examine and analyze the spread of measles in Osaka in 2014 and determine effective measures to prevent such occurrences.

Methods: We analyzed 47 cases of measles reported in Osaka, including one measles patient living in another prefecture where there was an outbreak. We focused on age distribution, the number of patients reported each week, estimated infection routes, history of measles vaccination, detection of viruses, and number of days it took to report the case after the onset of measles.

Purpose: To analyze the vitreomacular interface in idiopathic full-thickness macular holes (MHs) using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography.

Design: Prospective cross-sectional case series.

Methods: Ninety-one eyes of 86 consecutive patients with a MH were examined by spectral-domain optical coherence tomography.

The discovery that pyrazole-benzyl urea derivatives bearing a 2-molpholinopyrimidine moiety are novel p38α inhibitors is described. A comparative view of the binding modes of SB-203580 and BIRB-796 by structural alignment of two X-ray co-crystal structures was utilized to identify this novel series. Modification of the benzyl group led to compound 2b, a highly potent p38α inhibitor.

Purpose: To estimate the rate of macular hole formation in fellow eyes with a perifoveal posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) and early stage 1 intrafoveal lesions in patients with a unilateral idiopathic full-thickness macular hole (MH) using optical coherence tomography (OCT).

Design: Retrospective observational case series.

Methods: Fellow eyes of consecutive patients with a unilateral full-thickness MH were examined on OCT.

We found previously that 7-[3-(cyclohexylmethyl)ureido]-3-{1-methyl-1H-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridin-3-yl}quinoxalin-2(1H)-one (7d-6) has considerable potency as a PDGF inhibitor. This compound showed potent inhibitory activity in a PDGF-induced CPA (Cell Proliferation Assay) and APA (Auto-Phosphorylation Assay) (IC50 = 0.05 micromol/l in CPA, 0.

A 63-year-old woman had D-penicillamine-induced pemphigus with a high index value of circulating autoantibodies against desmoglein 1. Because of the lack of response to prednisolone monotherapy, the patient was treated with a combination therapy of mizoribine and low-dose prednisolone. The skin eruption was improved by this combination with a declined value of circulating anti-desmoglein 1 antibody.

Purpose: We investigated the immunohistochemical features of surgically resected idiopathic epiretinal membranes(ERMs) and secondary ERMs with regard to posterior vitreous detachment(PVD).

Methods: Six specimens of idiopathic epiretinal membranes(3 eyes with complete PVD, 2 eyes with partial PVD, and one eye with no PVD) and 3 specimens of secondary ERMs(all eyes with complete PVD) were immunohistochemically studied. We used type I, II, III, IV collagen and fibronectin to study extracellular components, and glial fibrillary acidic protein(GFAP), S 100 protein, vimentin, and so forth to study cellular components.
