We describe an in vitro culture technique for a microsporidian isolated from the corneal biopsy of an HIV-infected patient. The corneal biopsy was inoculated into a monolayer culture of fibroblasts derived from newborn mouse brain and incubated at 37 degrees C in an atmosphere of 5% CO2. Minimum essential medium supplemented with 2% fetal bovine serum appeared to be an optimum medium for growth and maintenance of the parasite and for production of large numbers of spores.

Examination of nucleotide diversity in 106 mitochondrial genomes of the most geographically widespread human malaria parasite, Plasmodium vivax, revealed a level of diversity similar to, but slightly higher than, that seen in the virulent human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. CD4(+) T cells co-expressing CD25 (CD4(+)CD25(+) T cells) have been identified as immunoregulatory suppressors modulating autoimmune response. Beside that, autoimmune response was supposed to be associated with malaria infection. Based on these data, we hypothesised that CD4(+)CD25(+) T cells may influence protective immunity to malaria parasites, while suppressing autoimmune response arising throughout the course of malarial infection.

The organization and allelic recombination of the merozoite surface protein-1 gene of Plasmodium vivax (PvMsp-1), the most widely prevalent human malaria parasite, were evaluated in complete nucleotide sequences of 40 isolates from various geographic areas. Alignment of 31 distinct alleles revealed the mosaic organization of PvMsp-1, consisting of seven interallele conserved blocks flanked by six variable blocks.
