Imine-based covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are crystalline porous materials with prospective uses in various devices. However, general bulk synthetic methods usually produce COFs as powders that are insoluble in most of the common organic solvents, arising challenges for the subsequent molding and fixing of these materials on substrates. Here, we report a novel synthetic methodology that utilizes an electrogenerated acid (EGA), which is produced at an electrode surface by electrochemical oxidation of a suitable precursor, acting as an effective Brønsted acid catalyst for imine bond formation from the corresponding amine and aldehyde monomers.

Cathodic synthesis provides sustainable access to 1-hydroxy- and 1-oxy-quinazolin-4-ones from easily accessible nitro starting materials. Mild reaction conditions, inexpensive and reusable carbon-based electrode materials, an undivided electrochemical setup, and constant current conditions characterise this method. Sulphuric acid is used as a simple supporting electrolyte as well as a catalyst for cyclisation.

Background: Recently, the common marmoset () has attracted significant interest as a non-human primate stroke model. Functional impairment in non-human primate stroke models should be evaluated quantitatively and successively after stroke, but conventional observational assessments of behavior cannot fully fit this purpose. In this paper, we report a behavioral analysis using MarmoDetector, a three-dimensional motion analysis, in an ischemic stroke model using photosensitive dye, along with an observational behavioral assessment and imaging examination.

A novel electron-deficient macrocycle, pillar[6]quinone (P[Q]6), has been synthesized for the first time by both chemical and electrochemical oxidation of pillar[6]arene, showing clear hexagonal columnar stacking in the solid state. Cathodic voltammetric studies of P[Q]6 revealed that three electrons are injected first, followed by stepwise one-electron reductions.

Atypical pituitary adenomas (APAs) are aggressive tumors, harboring a Ki-67 (MIB-1) staining index of 3% or more, and positive immunohistochemical staining for p53 protein, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) classification in 2004. Pituitary carcinomas (PC) usually develop from progressive APAs and predominantly consist of hormone-generating tumors, defined by the presence of disseminations in the cerebrospinal system or systemic metastases. Most of the cases with these malignant pituitary adenomas underwent surgeries, irradiations and adjuvant medical treatments, nevertheless, the therapies are mainly palliative.

We have studied the zero-order transmission of periodic germanium (Ge) subwavelength arrays in an infrared range by using finite-difference time-domain simulations. A special wavelength-selective peak in a triangular hole array of Ge film is observed with an enhanced transmission accompanied by a drastic suppression nearby, which cannot be found in a one-dimensional Ge subwavelength array and is different from the extraordinary transmission related to surface plasmons in a metal film. The electromagnetic field is found to be concentrated on both surfaces of the Ge film at this peak.

Using finite-difference-time-domain simulation, we have studied the near-field effect of Germanium (Ge) subwavelength arrays designed in-plane with a normal incidence. Spectra of vertical electric field component normal to the surface show pronounced resonance peaks in an infrared range, which can be applied in a quantum well infrared photodetector. Unlike the near-field optics in metallic systems that are commonly related to surface plasmons, the intense vertical field along the surface of the Ge film can be interpreted as a combination of diffraction and waveguide theory.

There have been several reports of temozolomide (TMZ) treatment of pituitary carcinomas and atypical adenomas. O(6)-methyl-guanine-DNA methyltransferase is not the sole molecule determining the sensitivity to TMZ in pituitary carcinomas and atypical adenomas. The Japan Society of Hypothalamic and Pituitary Tumors study suggests that MSH6, one of mismatch repair pathway enzyme, fulfills a contributory role to the efficacy of TMZ treatment for pituitary carcinomas and atypical adenomas.

Quantum entanglement of two photons created by spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC) can be used to probe quantum optical phenomena during a single cycle of light. Harris [Opt. Express 98, 063602 (2007)] suggested using ultrabroad parametric fluorescenc generated from a quasi-phase-matched (QPM) device whose poling period is chirped.

The presence of an intracranial aneurysm together with a pituitary adenoma presents tremendous risk of subarachnoid hemorrhage, during transsphenoidal surgery, particularly when the aneurysm lies near the operative field. A left supraclinoid internal carotid artery aneurysm and a clinically nonfunctioning pituitary adenoma coexisted in a 57-year-old woman. Initially, the aneurysm was treated by endovascular coil placement, and then the patient underwent pseudocapsule-based extracapsular resection of the pituitary tumor via a transnasal transsphenoidal endoscopic approach.

We demonstrate filtering characteristics of a polymer band-rejection filter (PBRF) with highly-ordered microphase-separated structure of block copolymers (BCPs). This PBRF is characterized by an Optical Density > 5 blocking at the center wavelength and narrow blocking full bandwidth of 8 nm. Moreover, the wavelength is easily tuned by blending two BCPs with different molecular-weight.

Preliminary findings of various types of globin expressed in the respiratory bronchiolar and alveolar epithelium prompted us to compare the expression of erythropoietin (Epo) and its receptor (EpoR) in normal (healthy) human lung tissues with that in malignant lung tissues. The expression of Epo and EpoR was examined at the transcriptional and protein levels in normal and malignant lung tissues by reverse transcription-PCR, western blot, and immunohistochemical analyses. EpoR mRNA, but not Epo mRNA, was detected in all samples.
