Axial neck and back pain after cervical spinal surgery is a common postoperative complication and can last for years. It is sometimes refractory to conventional treatments such as pharmacotherapy and spinal cord stimulation (SCS). Peripheral nerve field stimulation (PNFS) was recently introduced as an alternative treatment in the management of axial back pain into the occipital/craniofacial region and trunk in occipital neuralgia, post-herpetic neuralgia, and low back pain after lumbar spine surgery.
