A vector beam is a type of topological beam in which the polarization direction of light rotates around a singularity on the wavefront. This paper proposes a method to generate a vector beam by tightly focusing a pump beam in the crystalline direction such that the second-order nonlinear optical effect is forbidden. The directional dependence of the effective nonlinearity in zincblende crystals, such as ZnTe, was analytically investigated.

Article Synopsis
  • In Asia, particularly in Japan, dementia is most common in individuals aged 75 and older, highlighting the need for early detection of mild cognitive impairment (MCI).
  • The study analyzed 291 community-dwelling adults aged 75 and above, using the Mini-Mental State Examination to differentiate between non-MCI and MCI participants while assessing various physical, psychological, and health-related factors.
  • Findings indicated that those with MCI had shorter educational backgrounds, more medical visits for hypertension, and poorer balance, suggesting these factors could be used as screening tools for MCI and aid in developing targeted interventions for older adults.

Co-infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) often accelerates the course of HCV-associated liver disease. Daclatasvir (DCV) plus asunaprevir (ASV) have been shown to be highly effective for HCV-infected patients with genotype 1b. Three patients co-infected with HIV/HCV genotype 1b were enrolled in this study.

We herein describe the case of a 42-year-old man who developed severe hepatitis caused by hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection at 14 years after the start of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) treatment. Surprisingly, the levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) fluctuated, reaching a peak higher than 1,000 IU/L during chronic HCV infection, and the hepatic histology showed advanced liver fibrosis at 3 years after the primary HCV infection. He was treated with simeprevir, peginterferon-alpha, and ribavirin with a sustained viral response.
