Open surface water across the globe is essential for many life forms and is an important source for human settlements, agriculture, and industry. The presence and variation in time and space is influenced by different natural conditions (e.g.

Purpose: To show feasibility of laser ablation inductively coupled mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) for analysis of zinc content and concentration in breast cancer tissue and to correlate this with validated prognostic and predictive markers, i.e. histological grading and expression of steroid receptors (estrogen receptor, ER; progesterone receptor, PR) and human epidermal growth-factor receptor 2 (Her2).

Purpose: Focusing on the trace metal zinc as a potential biomarker for breast cancer, the literature describes bulk zinc concentrations in breast cancer tissue to be higher than in normal tissue. From a histopathological point of view, cancer cells are intermingled with normal cells of the stroma within breast cancer tissues; therefore, bulk analysis cannot reflect this situation adequately. To address this problem, analysis of zinc distribution in histological sections is the method of choice.

Advanced stage of pancreatic cancer at diagnosis is strongly associated with a low socioeconomic status (SES), and patients from affluent areas have better cancer survival than patients from deprived areas. We tested, in our population of pancreatic cancer patients, the hypothesis that surrogates representing a lower SES or demographic factors (DGF) linked to rural areas are associated with a more advanced disease stage at presentation.

In this study, we investigated the inflammatory role of MMP-9 and the ECM breakdown product hyaluronan as a trigger for the postoperative intestinal inflammatory response of postoperative ileus.
Methods: We performed a standardized intestinal surgical manipulation on rats to produce ileus assessed by the oral non-digestible fluorescein isothiocyanate-dextran transit assay.
Many membrane proteins are involved in the transport of nutrients in plants. While the import of amino acids into plant cells is, in principle, well understood, their export has been insufficiently described. Here, we present the identification and characterization of the membrane protein Siliques Are Red1 (SIAR1) from Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) that is able to translocate amino acids bidirectionally into as well as out of the cell.

Background: The aim of this study was to analyze the efficiency and safety of the bipolar tissue/vessel sealing and cutting device EnSeal(™) in comparison to the conventional clamp and ligation technique in visceral surgery.
Material And Methods: In an acute animal model, a part of the small bowel, a part of the colon and the kidneys were resected either with the conventional clamp and ligation technique or with EnSeal(™). Operation time, blood loss and blood parameters as well as the lateral thermal spread were evaluated.
The biochemical transformation of mercury, tin, arsenic and bismuth through formation of volatile alkylated species performs a fundamental role in determining the environmental processing of these elements. While the toxicity of inorganic forms of most of these compounds are well documented (e.g.

However, although shortened operation time, hospital stay and faster postoperative reconvalescence might be possible with IPOM repair, the economic calculation including mesh costs is significantly higher. In this study the two operation techniques were compared and the perioperative advantages and disadvantages of both methods were analyzed based on the German diagnosis-related groups (DRG) system.

Here, we studied the biotransformation of arsenic, tellurium, antimony, tin and germanium during composting. Time resolved investigation revealed a highly dynamic process during self-heated composting with markedly differing time patterns for arsenic and tellurium species.

Standardized intestinal manipulation (IM) leads to local bowel wall inflammation subsequently spreading over the entire gastrointestinal tract. Previously, we demonstrated that this so-called gastrointestinal field effect (FE) is immune mediated. This study aimed to investigate the role of CCR7 in IM-induced FE.

Intestinal macrophages produce mediators that paralyze myocytes, but it is unclear how the macrophages are activated, especially those in unmanipulated intestinal areas. Here we show that intestinal surgery activates intestinal CD103(+)CD11b(+) dendritic cells (DCs) to produce interleukin-12 (IL-12).

Nevertheless, reliable analytical techniques and tools are indispensable in speciation analysis of trace elements, especially since environmental or biological samples are usually characterised by complex matrices. Here the methylating capability of hepatic cells was observed in vitro.

Due to their complexity, secondary operations at a later stage rank amongst the most demanding surgical procedures. We sought to critically analyze indications and outcome from early revision and subsequent redo procedures following distal pancreatic resection (DPR).

Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of the chimeric-monoclonal-anti-TNF-α antibody infliximab as perioperative single shot treatment addressing inflammatory processes during acute rejection early after transplantation. Orthotopic, isogenic and allogenic SBTx was performed in rats (BN-Lewis/BN-BN) with infliximab treatment.

Based on this observation and the current literature, the possible mechanisms for an eventual contribution of a heterozygosity of a heterozygous AAT-deficiency for a hepatocellular carcinoma are discussed. Alpha-1-antitrypsin (AAT)-deficiency (Laurell-Eriksson syndrome) is a genetic disorder, in which individuals who are homozygous for a deficiency allele are at an increased lifetime risk for pulmonary emphysema, liver cirrhosis, and primary hepatocellular carcinoma.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFWhile the metal(loid)s arsenic, bismuth, and selenium (probably also tellurium) have been shown to be enzymatically methylated in the human body, this has not yet been demonstrated for antimony, cadmium, germanium, indium, lead, mercury, thallium, and tin, although the latter elements can be biomethylated in the environment. Methylated metal(loid)s exhibit increased mobility, thus leading to a more efficient metal(loid) transport within the body and, in particular, opening chances for passing membrane barriers (blood-brain barrier, placental barrier). As a consequence human health may be affected.

Mechanical trauma of the gut is an unavoidable event in abdominal surgery. Former studies demonstrated that intestinal manipulation induces a strong inflammation within the tunica muscularis. We hypothesized that mechanical strain initiates or aggravates proinflammatory responses in intestinal smooth muscle cells (iSMC) or macrophages.

The literature on intrathoracic kidneys in children and adults is reviewed and discussed, focusing on diagnostic procedures and surgical therapy. Additionally, the case of a 35-year-old woman with a relapse of a left-sided intrathoracic kidney after pregnancy is reported.

This study examined and compared the effect of tacrolimus and sirolimus on inflammation in graft muscularis. After allogeneic orthotopic SBTx, recipient rats were treated with tacrolimus or sirolimus.

Comorbidities are known to increase the perioperative risk profile and therefore amplify treatment expenses.
Aim: The aim of this study was to analyse whether the reimbursement of additional costs due to PD in surgical patients was sufficiently considered by diagnosis-related grouping (DRG).
Background: Distal pancreatectomy is performed less frequently than pancreatic head resection. Secondary operations due to postoperative complications are surgically complex and demanding, hence often interdisciplinary approaches are pursued. We have analysed the indications and outcome of revision surgery and interventional procedures subsequent to pancreatic left resection.

This study analyzed our experience with urgent pancreatoduodenectomies; special emphases were put on the evaluation of diagnostic means and the validation of existing indications for performance of this procedure.
Methods: Three hundred one patients who underwent pancreatoduodenectomy between 1989 and 2008 were identified from a pancreatic resection database and reviewed for emergency indications.
Background: Postoperative ileus is mediated through a severe inflammation of the tunica muscularis. Inhibition of initially involved muscularis macrophages could be a promising clinical approach to prevent postoperative ileus. The aim of this study was to investigate whether pharmacologic or genetic depletion of these inflammatory cells influences anastomotic healing.
