Article Synopsis
  • Isoflurane and sevoflurane are both used for equine anesthesia, but this study compared their effects in 101 horses undergoing elective surgery.
  • There was no significant difference in the support needed during anesthesia or in recovery quality and duration between the two anesthetic agents.
  • A substantial percentage of horses required additional medication for anesthesia during the procedure, but overall outcomes were comparable for both agents.

Many real-world applications have been suggested in the swarm robotics literature. However, there is a general lack of understanding of what needs to be done for robot swarms to be useful and trusted by users in reality. This paper aims to investigate user perception of robot swarms in the workplace, and inform design principles for the deployment of future swarms in real-world applications.

Freely-available satellite data streams and the ability to process these data on cloud-computing platforms such as Google Earth Engine have made frequent, large-scale landcover mapping at high resolution a real possibility. In this paper we apply these technologies, along with machine learning, to the mapping of peatlands-a landcover class that is critical for preserving biodiversity, helping to address climate change impacts, and providing ecosystem services, e.g.

The degree of surface roughness and clarity with which a surface in a brittle material can be formed via fracture is known to be related to the speed of the propagating crack. Cracks traversing a brittle material at low speed produce very smooth surfaces, while those propagating faster create less reflective and rough surfaces (Buehler MJ, Gao H. 2006 Nature 439, 307-310 (doi:10.

Urban-rainfall runoff affected by transportation is a complex matrix of a very wide gradation of particulate matter (< 1 to > 10 000 microm) and dissolved inorganic and organic constituents. Particulate matter transported by rainfall runoff can be a significant vector for many reactive particulate-bound constituents, particularly metal elements. The water quality and hydrology of nine events from a representative elevated section of Interstate 10 (I-10) (eastbound average daily traffic load of 70 400 vehicles) in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, were characterized and compared with respect to the passage of each hydrograph.

Combinations of medetomidine with either propofol or ketamine were compared for the sedation and induction of anaesthesia in dogs undergoing a variety of surgical (60 per cent) and non-surgical (40 per cent) procedures. Eighty-four dogs were used at four sites. Medetomidine was administered intramuscularly at a dose of 1000 micrograms/m2 body surface area 10 to 15 minutes before the induction of anaesthesia by the administration of propofol (n = 44) or ketamine (n = 40) dosed to effect.

Enflurane (Ethrane; Abbott Laboratories Ltd), a new inhalation anaesthetic, was used on 30 clinical cases. A surgical plane of anaesthesia was quickly obtained and recovery was rapid. Respiratory depression occurred with a reduction in rate which was more marked in deeper planes of anaesthesia.
