The effects of ethylketocyclazocine (EKC), Mr 2266 and naltrexone on the stereotyped behaviors induced by an intraperitoneal injection of phencyclidine (PCP) were examined. PCP-induced turning, backpedalling, head weaving and sniffing were antagonized by pretreatment with EKC (0.25-4.

Nephritic factor of the alternative complement pathway (C3NeF) is an IgG autoantibody which binds to and stabilizes the C3 convertase (C3bBb) enzyme, and which has been detected mainly in sera from patients with membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN) and partial lipodystrophy. To study the production of C3NeF, mononuclear cells isolated from the peripheral blood of patients with MPGN and C3NeF activity in their sera were infected with Epstein Barr virus (EBV) to establish active B lymphocyte cell lines. By using a modified C3NeF screening assay, we detected C3NeF activity in the supernatant of a B cell line derived from a patient with MPGN Type II, but in none of the supernatants of B cell lines derived from normal individuals.

We investigated the effects of N-allylnormetazocine (SKF 10,047) and morphine on the stereotyped behaviors induced by the intraperitoneal injection of phencyclidine (PCP). PCP-induced turning and backpedalling were significantly potentiated by pretreatment with SKF 10,047 (10 mg/kg) but sniffing and head weaving were not. On the other hand, pretreatment with morphine dose-dependently attenuated PCP-induced sniffing and head weaving, but not turning and backpedalling.

Experiments were conducted in order to examine the mechanism of changes in body temperature induced by phencyclidine (PCP) in mice. It is well known that morphine changes body temperature in a biphasic manner. PCP also produced hyperthermia at low doses (5 and 10 mg/kg) and hypothermia at high dose (40 mg/kg).

The effect of calcium deficiency on the content of the nonreducible cross-linking amino acid, pyridinoline, in rat mandibular bone was studied. An apparent decrease in serum and bone calcium levels was observed beginning at four weeks after initiation of a calcium-deficient diet. The pyridinoline content in the bone of calcium-deficient animals began to increase at four weeks and thereafter increased markedly as compared to that of controls.

We investigated the effects of thiorphan, a specific inhibitor of enkephalinase A and bestatin, a specific inhibitor of aminopeptidase, on the stereotyped behaviors induced by phencyclidine (PCP) in cannulated rats. The PCP-induced turning was significantly potentiated when thiorphan (50 micrograms) and bestatin (50 micrograms) were injected simultaneously into the rat lateral ventricle. The increase of PCP-induced turning was completely antagonized by the pretreatment with naloxone.

Emotional stress markedly inhibited E1 mouse convulsions. Norepinephrine and dopamine levels in E1 mouse brain were hardly affected by stress, though a marked decrease in norepinephrine and dopamine levels was observed in the ddY mouse brain. The serotonin levels decreased in the E1 mouse brain in the same degree as in the ddY mouse brain.

Thin split-skin autografts of normal color were performed on depigmented skin caused by second- and third-degree burns in 32 patients. Repigmentation appeared in almost all the recipient areas soon after grafting and no depigmentation occurred again in the treated area.

The study investigated the interaction between phencyclidine (PCP) and morphine in affecting the levels of met-enkephalin, dopamine, DOPAC and HVA in mice. Morphine 5 mg/kg alone and PCP 10 mg/kg alone failed to change the levels of met-enkephalin in the midbrain and striatum. However, PCP in combination with morphine produced an increase in met-enkephalin levels and a decrease in HVA levels.

We report a dramatic response of the nephrotic syndrome to prednisolone therapy (2 mg per kg per day) in a 6-year-old boy with IgA nephropathy. He had developed massive proteinuria (22.1 gm per day) and microscopic hematuria shortly after an episode of tonsillitis.

To determine proper operative procedures for aortic regurgitation (AR), we attempted to evaluate the severity of AR by two-dimensional Doppler echocardiography (TDE), using 15 mongrel dogs with experimentally-induced AR. Furthermore, the left ventricular (LV) suction method was investigated for the significance in estimating the severity of AR, cardiac outputs were measured by the thermodilution technique, TDE, and electromagnetic flowmeter (EMF). The values obtained by each method were compared.

Epidermal growth factor (EGF), administered subcutaneously to neonatal mice at daily doses of 1,2 and 4 micrograms/g body weight for 3 days, significantly increased glucosamine-6-phosphate synthetase activity in the colon. A single injection of EGF at doses of 2 and 4 micrograms/g body weight also significantly increased enzyme activity. When administered to mature mice, EGF (4 micrograms/g body weight for 3 days) had no apparent effect on the enzyme activity.

Oral mucosa of beige (Chediak-Higashi) mice had decreased levels of collagen synthesis and prolyl hydroxylase activity compared with normal animals. No significant difference was observed in non-collagen protein synthesis between the two groups. These results suggest that decreased collagen biosynthesis in oral tissues may be partially involved in the increased incidence of periodontal disease in the Chediak-Higashi syndrome.

The effects of phencyclidine (PCP) on the levels of serotonin (5-HT) and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) in discrete brain areas of mouse were investigated. Following a single administration, PCP significantly increased at 60 min the level of 5-HT but not 5-HIAA in the cortex. However, acute administration of PCP induced no changes of 5-HT and 5-HIAA levels in other brain areas investigated.

In this study the properties of Suc-GPLGP-MCAase and dipeptidyl-aminopeptidase (DAP) in clone MC3T3-E1 cells which have osteoblastic ability were examined. The Suc-GPLGP-MCAase was the most active at pH 8.0 and its molecular weight was about 65,000 as judged by gel filtration method.

Whey is a by-product of the manufacture of cheese from milk. The usual practice is to dispose of it, the usage of whey being not sufficiently developed, though it contains proteins of excellent quality such as beta-lactoglobulin and alpha-lactalbumin. Interaction between kappa-casein and whey protein was examined in order to form new food materials.

A marked sexual difference in kininase activity was found in the adult mouse submandibular gland. The activity was over 3-fold higher in females than in males between 10 and 12 weeks of age. Castration of male mice increased kininase activity up to the level of females.

22 patients with IgA nephropathy aged 7-16 years, 15 of whom were found by mass urine screening of school children, were divided into three groups based on the degree of their proteinuria at admission: group A (n = 6) below 0.5 g/day of urine protein, group B (n = 7) between 0.6 and 3.
