The effects of artificial porphyrins on the electron-transport chains of living microbes were investigated. The participation of porphyrins in the microbial electron-transport chains was demonstrated by spectroscopic and current-generation measurements. Large enhancement of the microbial current generation was accomplished by adding a cationic water-soluble manganese porphyrin as an electron mediator.

Aim: We compared gender differences in the sociodemographic characteristics of community-dwelling dependent elderly who use various community-based services under long-term care insurance programs, as well as in mortality, hospitalization, and institutionalization during a 3-year follow-up period.

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study using the baseline data of 1,875 care recipients from the Nagoya Longitudinal Study for Frail Elderly (NLS-FE), and a prospective study using their 3-year follow-up data. The data, which were collected at the patients' homes or from care-managing center records, included the clients' and caregivers' demographic characteristics, living arrangements, community-based services used, depression as assessed by the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15), a rating for basic activities of daily living (ADL), and comorbidities.

In all plants and algae, most plastid proteins are encoded by the nuclear genome and, consequently, need to be transported into plastids across multiple membranes. In organisms with secondary plastids, which evolved by secondary endosymbioses, and are surrounded by three or four envelope membranes, precursors of nuclear-encoded plastid proteins generally have an N-terminal bipartite targeting sequence that consists of an endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-targeting signal peptide (SP) and a transit peptide-like (TPL) sequence. The bipartite targeting sequences have been demonstrated to be necessary and sufficient for targeting proteins into the plastids of many algal groups, including chlorarachniophytes.

The indeterminate nature of plant growth and development depends on the stem cell system found in meristems. The Arabidopsis thaliana vascular meristem includes procambium and cambium. In these tissues, cell-cell signaling, mediated by a ligand-receptor pair made of the TDIF (for tracheary element differentiation inhibitory factor) peptide and the TDR/PXY (for TDIF RECEPTOR/ PHLOEM INTERCALATED WITH XYLEM) membrane protein kinase, promotes proliferation of procambial cells and suppresses their xylem differentiation.

Recent genome-wide association study using four prospective population-based cohorts identified two single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on chromosome 12p13, rs12425791 and rs11833579, to be significantly associated with the incidence of atherothrombotic stroke. To examine the association of these SNPs with atherothrombotic stroke in the Japanese population, we carried out a case-control association study using a total of 3784 cases and 3102 controls. We also examined the effect of these SNPs on the subtypes of ischemic stroke.

Background: Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR) is a collection of methods for estimating the number of copies of a specific DNA template in a sample, but one that is not universally accepted because it can lead to highly inaccurate (albeit precise) results. The fundamental problem is that qPCR methods use mathematical models that explicitly or implicitly apply an estimate of amplification efficiency, the error of which is compounded in the analysis to unacceptable levels.

Results: We present a new method of qPCR analysis that is efficiency-independent and yields accurate and precise results in controlled experiments.

Prospective cohort study of 1582 community-dwelling disabled elderly and paired informal caregivers was conducted. Secondary plastids are acquired by the engulfment and retention of eukaryotic algae, which results in an additional surrounding membrane or pair of membranes relative to the more familiar primary plastids of land plants. In most cases, the endocytosed alga loses its eukaryotic genome as it becomes integrated, but in two algal groups, the cryptophytes and chlorarachniophytes, the secondary plastids retain a vestigial nucleus in the periplastidal compartment (PPC), the remnant eukaryotic cytoplasm between the inner and the outer membrane pairs. Many essential housekeeping genes are missing from these reduced genomes, suggesting that they are now encoded in the host nucleus and their products are targeted to the PPC.

Although stroke is a common cause of death and a major cause of disability all over the world, genetic components of common forms of ischemic stroke are largely unknown. To identify susceptibility genes of atherothrombotic stroke, we performed a large case-control association study and a replication study in a total of 2775 cases with atherothrombotic stroke and 2839 controls. Through the analysis in 860 cases and 860 age- and sex-matched controls, we found that a single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), rs2280887, in the ARHGEF10 gene was significantly associated with atherothrombotic stroke even after the adjustment of multiple testing by a permutation test [unadjusted P = 1.
