  • Telemedicine enhances medical practice by using technology to provide care remotely, complementing traditional in-person visits and making healthcare more accessible and efficient for patients.
  • Clinical studies in nephrology show that telemedicine can improve patient satisfaction and adherence to treatment, but its potential remains underutilized in this field.
  • The paper explores innovative methods for remote health assessments, such as analyzing saliva for kidney function and using smartphone imaging for blood analysis, highlighting the need for further research in telenephrology to optimize patient care.

Collagens are abundant structural proteins found in both mammalian and marine species, and attractive biomaterials used in various fields. Jellyfish collagen-based products have become increasingly popular because of their clinically proven health benefits such as the effects of skin wound healing and immune stimulation. To develop detection tools for jellyfish collagen, we generated four monoclonal antibodies, MCOL1, 2, 3, and 4, by immunizing mice with moon jellyfish collagen.

Rationale: Adalimumab (ADA) is an antitumor necrosis factor agent that is used for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. However, its cost has resulted in varying degrees of restricted access across global healthcare economies. Biosimilars are agents that contain a similar version of the active substance of an already approved original biologic agent and are intended to be used for the same indication as the reference product.

  • Telemedicine is becoming popular globally, but Japan has not widely adopted it, and the reasons for this are not well understood.
  • The study surveyed over 40,000 individuals and 4,900 medical facilities to assess their experiences and practices related to online medical care in Japan.
  • Results showed high response rates from patients and professionals, revealing that there are significant barriers to the expansion of telemedicine in the country.

Introduction: The cognitive function score (CFS) is a public scale for assessing the activities of daily living (ADL) in older adults with dementia in Japan. In contrast, the scores of the revised Hasegawa's dementia scale (HDS-R), an easy-to-use dementia screening tool developed in Japan, are significantly correlated with mini-mental state examination scores and are widely utilized in various countries. This novel study aimed to elucidate the previously unexplored criterion-related validity of the CFS and HDS-R and the Bedriddenness Rank (BR), Barthel index (BI), and Katz index (KI).

Background And Objectives: This study aimed to examine the development of clinical competence of novice physical therapists (PTs) during their first year of employment, following the implementation of an original in-house educational program. The educational program was designed to offer diverse training opportunities at an early stage, during the first year of employment.

Methods: Thirty-eight novice PTs (21 males and 17 females, mean age 23.

  • Plasma is created by applying high energy to gases, and recent studies show that non-thermal atmospheric pressure gas discharge plasma (NTAPP) can promote healing in living organisms, including aiding bone and tendon repair.
  • In an experiment with 36 rabbits, NTAPP was applied to the infraspinatus tendon’s insertion site to assess its effect on the tendon-bone junction during rotator cuff repair, comparing results with a control group.
  • Results showed that NTAPP significantly improved the healing process, with higher histological scores and mechanical strength in the plasma-treated group compared to controls at both 4 and 8 weeks post-treatment.

Determining the content of the nutrient choline in foods and obtaining the required amount from the diet are crucial. One way to measure choline in foods is by converting choline esters to free choline via acid hydrolysis, followed by quantifying the total choline, as adopted by the AOAC method (AOAC-Choline); however, certain choline esters are difficult to hydrolyse. Here, we investigated various acid hydrolysis conditions to establish a reliable method for determining the total choline in foods by detecting free choline using highly sensitive and selective mass spectrometry.

Even though dynamic multidisciplinary team discussions are crucial for end-of-life care management and decisions concerning chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the details of the discussion contents remain poorly understood. This study aimed to identify essential considerations in decision-making for patients with chronic respiratory diseases to enhance a consensus-based approach. A qualitative content analysis of focus group conversations on published clinical case reports in the Japanese community about end-of-life care for patients with chronic respiratory disorders was conducted.

Purpose: To evaluate the usefulness of robotic subxiphoid-optical thymectomy (RST).

Methods: Thirty-seven procedures (thymoma, n = 19; thymic carcinoma, n = 1; myasthenia gravis, n = 3; and others, n = 14) performed between October 2020 and December 2023 were included. The right and left 6th intercostal midclavicular lines and subxiphoid, with an assistant port placed in the right third intercostal anterior axillary line, were adapted.

Background: Fatty infiltration (FI) and muscle atrophy (MA) in the rotator cuff muscles following rotator cuff tears (RCT) persist postrepair, increasing the risk of re-tears. Brown adipocyte-like "beige adipocytes" are expected to have a therapeutic effect on intramuscular FI and MA due to their lipolytic activity and the muscle regenerative effects of their secreted factors. However, whether parathyroid hormone (PTH) ameliorates the already advanced FI and MA remains unknown.

Article Synopsis
  • * Qualitative analysis revealed four main themes: fear of personal protective equipment (PPE), loneliness, dissatisfaction with behavioral restrictions, and family interference with care services.
  • * The findings suggest that preventive measures during the pandemic led to increased social isolation and mental distress among people with dementia, compounded by misunderstandings of these measures by both patients and their families.

Article Synopsis
  • * This study is the first to demonstrate that NTAPP can significantly accelerate the repair process of Achilles tendons in a rat model, showing histological improvements and collagen type transformation shortly after treatment.
  • * The results suggest that even a single NTAPP treatment during surgery can enhance early recovery by increasing tensile strength and promoting collagen maturation in injured tendons.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the initial decrease in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) that occurs when patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) start taking sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors.
  • It examines factors influencing this initial GFR drop using data from the Japan Chronic Kidney Disease Database and links it to potential kidney health outcomes over time.
  • Results indicate that certain medications and higher urinary protein levels contribute to a more significant GFR decline, which may put patients at greater risk for severe kidney issues later on.

Background/aim: Tracheobronchial adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare type of malignancy. Although complete resection is standard treatment for localized ACC, treatment for unresectable ACC has not been established. It is unclear whether concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) followed by immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) therapy is effective for ACC.

Globally, there remain significant disparities in the capacity and quality of kidney care, as evidenced by the third edition of the International Society of Nephrology Global Kidney Health Atlas (ISN-GKHA). In the ISN North and East Asia region, the chronic kidney disease (CKD) burden varied widely; Taiwan had the heaviest burden of treated kidney failure (3679 per million population [pmp]) followed by Japan and South Korea. Except in Hong Kong, hemodialysis (HD) was the main dialysis modality for all other countries in the region and was much higher than the global median prevalence.

Introduction: The danger of diagnostic errors exists in daily medical practice, and doctors are required to avoid such errors as much as possible. Although various factors, including cognitive, system-related, and patient-related factors, are involved in the occurrence of diagnostic errors, the percentage of doctors with insufficient medical knowledge among those factors is extremely low. Therefore, lectures on diagnostic errors might also be useful for medical students without experience working as doctors.
