Effect of depression and anxiety on health-related quality of life outcomes and patient satisfaction after surgery for cervical compressive myelopathy.

Objective: Preoperative mood disorders such as depression and anxiety are known to be associated with poor health-related quality of life (HRQOL) outcomes after lumbar spine surgery. However, the effects of preoperative depression and anxiety on postoperative HRQOL outcomes and patient satisfaction in cervical compressive myelopathy are yet to be clarified. This study aimed to investigate the effect of depression and anxiety on HRQOL outcomes and patient satisfaction following surgery for cervical compressive myelopathy.

Biodegradable Composites Developed from PBAT/PLA Binary Blends and Silk Powder: Compatibilization and Performance Evaluation.

Silk fibroin powder and biodegradable polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT)/poly lactide (PLA) blends were melt-mixed together to fabricate natural and synthetic polymers as possible new sources of biomaterials. Morphological observations conducted through scanning electron microscopy indicated poor dispersion of the silk powder agglomerates, which resulted from strong hydrogen interactions between silk powder chains in the PBAT/PLA matrix. Although the silk powder agglomerates decreased the mechanical properties, as silk powder fractions increased, the ternary blend with 10 wt % silk powder still displayed high impact strength of 108 J/m and tensile modulus of 1.

Transverse ligament of the elbow joint: an anatomic study of cadavers.

Background: The medial collateral ligament of the elbow joint consists of the anterior oblique ligament (AOL), posterior oblique ligament (POL), and transverse ligament (TL). This study aimed to clarify the structure of the TL, with a focus on the continuity between the TL and AOL.

Methods: A total of 42 cadavers (18 males, 24 females) were dissected at Aichi Medical University between 2016 and 2018.

A case of a 64-year-old woman who had undergone resection of a femoral giant cell tumor in another hospital 35 years before was referred to our hospital for diabetes education. Chest radiography and computed tomography (CT) revealed diffuse densely calcified nodular lesions that appear to be in both lung fields. Since pulmonary metastases of the giant cell tumor of the bone was suspected, she underwent a lung biopsy, which showed diffuse pulmonary ossification (DPO) of the dendriform type.

MCL1 inhibition enhances the therapeutic effect of MEK inhibitors in KRAS-mutant lung adenocarcinoma cells.

Objectives: MCL1 is an anti-apoptotic BCL2 family member that is highly expressed in various malignant tumors. However, little is known about the role of MCL1 in KRAS-mutant lung adenocarcinomas. In this study, we aimed to clarify whether MCL1 could be a therapeutic target in KRAS-mutant lung adenocarcinomas for which no effective molecular targeted drugs are available.

Spinal cord swelling in patients with cervical compression myelopathy.

Background: Intramedullary hyperintense lesions associated with spinal cord edema on T2-weighted MR images (T2WI) are rare findings in patients with cervical spondylosis and are poorly characterized. We investigated the clinical characteristics of spinal cord edema due to cervical spondylosis (SCECS).

Methods: In total, 214 patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy who underwent surgery between April 2007 and March 2017 were divided into SCECS and non-SCECS groups with SCECS defined as follows: (1) intramedullary signal intensity (ISI) of the cervical spinal cord in sagittal T2WI extending to more than one vertebral body height; (2) "fuzzy" ISI, recognized as a faint intramedullary change with a largely indistinct and hazy border; and (3) a larger sagittal diameter of the spinal cord segment with ISI just above or below the cord compression area compared with areas of the cervical spine without ISI.

Evaluation of the pressure on the dorsal surface of the distal radius using a cadaveric and computational model: clinical considerations in intersection syndrome and Colles' fracture.

We herein report the first case of immune-mediated drug-induced liver injury that may have been caused by laninamivir. A 15-year-old girl was diagnosed with influenza and prescribed 40 mg laninamivir. Six weeks later, she was admitted to our hospital because of jaundice and fatigue.

Different effects of partial pressure in a high-pressure gaseous mixture of carbon monoxide and oxygen for rat heart preservation.

We maintained the function of an extracted rat heart after 24-48 h preservation in a high-pressure gaseous mixture of carbon monoxide (CO) and oxygen (O). Here, we assessed the effects of different partial pressures of hyperbaric CO and O for 24-48 h at 4 °C on rat heart preservation and compared conditions including immersion in University of Wisconsin solution. Preserved hearts were transplanted into recipient rats via heterotopic cervical heart transplantation for in vivo evaluation and perfused using the Langendorff system for ex vivo evaluation.

The Combination of 'Benifuuki' with Quercetin Suppresses Hepatic Fat Accumulation in High-Fat High-Cholesterol Diet-Fed Rats.

We investigated the combined effects of 'Benifuuki,' a tea cultivar that contains O-methylated catechins like epigallocatechin-3-O-(3-O-methyl) gallate, and quercetin on hepatic fat accumulation in male Sprague-Dawley rats fed a high-fat, high-cholesterol diet for 15 d. Rats given 'Benifuuki'+quercetin had synergistically lower liver triglyceride (TG) level compared with rats given 'Benifuuki' or quercetin alone. Compared with 'Benifuuki' or quercetin alone, supplementation with 'Benifuuki'+quercetin resulted in a low level of fatty acid synthase (FAS) and stearoyl-CoA desaturase1 (SCD1) gene expression levels.

Association of Sarcopenia with and Efficacy of Anti-PD-1/PD-L1 Therapy in Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer.

Introduction:: Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors are one of the most commonly used medications for hypertension. Rarely, ACE inhibitors have the potential to cause a syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH).

Case Presentation:: A 70-year-old woman with > 10 years ACE inhibitor therapy with normonatremia suddenly developed severe SIADH when she took a liquid diet in the uneventful perioperative period, with hemodynamic stability and no surgical complications.

Retrospective efficacy analysis of immune checkpoint inhibitors in patients with EGFR-mutated non-small cell lung cancer.

Background: Treatment with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) leads to initial response in most patients with EGFR-mutated non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). In contrast, little is known of the subpopulation of patients with NSCLC with EGFR mutations who exhibit clinical outcomes that require treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). Therefore, to identify eligible cases to treat with ICIs, we retrospectively analyzed the correlation between clinical features and the efficacy of ICIs in patients with EGFR mutations.

[Pigmented Paraganglioma in the Anterior Mediastinum].

In order to understand the pathobiology of neurotrophic keratopathy, we established a mouse model by coagulating the first branch of the trigeminal nerve (V1 nerve). In our model, the sensory nerve in the central cornea disappeared and remaining fibers were sparse in the peripheral limbal region. Impaired corneal epithelial healing in the mouse model was associated with suppression of both cell proliferation and expression of stem cell markers in peripheral/limbal epithelium as well as a reduction of transient receptor potential vanilloid 4 (TRPV4) expression in tissue.

Effective combined therapy with ramucirumab for advanced pulmonary pleomorphic carcinoma.

Pulmonary pleomorphic carcinoma (PPC) is a rare disease with a poor prognosis. Most patients with PPC are refractory to chemotherapy, whereas good responses to platinum-based chemotherapy in combination with the anti-angiogenesis agent bevacizumab have been reported. An 82-year-old man was diagnosed with PPC with a clinical stage of T3N0M0, coincident with primary lung adenocarcinoma in an early stage.
