Phallometry is an objective method of assessing male sexual arousal. The main applications in forensic psychiatry concern the evaluation of men charged with or convicted of sexual offences, the evaluation of those with suspected paraphilias not subject to the criminal justice system, risk assessment and measurement of response to sex offender treatment. In some jurisdictions, phallometry is incorporated into legal decisions about release from custody or discharge from secure hospitals.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigated how first-generation (FGA) and second-generation antipsychotics (SGA) affect metabolic syndrome risk factors in mentally ill patients in Qatar, focusing on adherence to prescription guidelines and monitoring.
  • Data from 439 patients revealed that those on SGAs displayed higher rates of obesity, elevated blood pressure, and increased triglycerides compared to those on FGAs, indicating worse metabolic health.
  • The findings highlighted a high prevalence of metabolic issues, particularly among SGA users, with concerns about polypharmacy and inadequate monitoring of metabolic health, suggesting the need for more prospective studies to improve patient care.
