This paper presents a parameterisation framework based on (inverted) elliptic PDEs for addressing the planar parameterisation problem of finding a valid description of the domain's interior given no more than a spline-based description of its boundary contours. The framework is geared towards isogeometric analysis (IGA) applications wherein the physical domain is comprised of more than four sides, hence requiring more than one patch. We adopt the concept of harmonic maps and propose several PDE-based problem formulations capable of finding a valid map between a convex parametric multipatch domain and the piecewise-smooth physical domain with an equal number of sides.

Research on attention towards non-social stimuli in preschoolers with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has increased over the past decade; however, findings have been inconsistent. It has been suggested that stimuli relating to common circumscribed interests (CIs) elicit more attention than non-CI related stimuli. This meta-analysis synthesizes results from 31 studies that compared attention towards non-social stimuli in children with ASD under the age of five with typically developing (TD) controls using eye-tracking.

A framework for orbital-free Laplacian-level meta-generalized-gradient approximation (meta-GGA) for the noninteracting free-energy-density functionals based upon analysis of the fourth-order gradient expansion is developed. The framework presented here provides a new tool for developing advanced orbital-free thermal functionals at the meta-GGA level of theory. A nonempirical meta-GGA functional, which in the slowly varying density limit correctly reduces to the finite-temperature fourth-order gradient expansion for the noninteracting free energy, is constructed.

We present a test of the two most established reciprocity models, an intention factor model and a reference value model. We test characteristic elements of each model in a series of twelve mini-ultimatum games. Results from online experiments show major differences between actual behavior and predictions of both models: the distance of actual offers to the proposed reference value provides a poor measure for the kindness of offers, while a comparison of offers with extreme offers as suggested by the intention factor model makes offers indiscriminable in richer settings.

Plastic induration of the penis (PIP, Peyronie's disease) is an acquired and chronic disease of the penis, which is characterized by penile pain, distortion and deformation of the penis as well as the resulting impairments in sexual activity of the patient. The most probable causes are microtrauma and macrotrauma within the tunica albuginea of the corpora cavernosa, which due to an abnormal wound healing subsequently leads to the formation of fibrosis in this region. Various predisposing factors and also a genetic predisposition are discussed.

Laser-direct-drive fusion target designs with solid deuterium-tritium (DT) fuel, a high-Z gradient-density pusher shell (GDPS), and a Au-coated foam layer have been investigated through both 1D and 2D radiation-hydrodynamic simulations. Cas9 targets DNA during genome editing by forming an RNA:DNA heteroduplex (R-loop) between the Cas9-bound guide RNA and the targeted DNA strand. We have recently demonstrated that R-loop formation by catalytically inactive Cas9 (dCas9) is inherently mutagenic, in part, by promoting spontaneous cytosine deamination within the non-targeted single-stranded DNA of the dCas9-induced R-loop. In this study, a biosorbent material with characteristics for the adsorption of organic compounds was used for a cork pellet-based bar adsorptive microextraction technique, as a new greener alternative for the determination of organochlorine compounds. Aldrin, chlordane, dieldrin, endrin, lindane, 4,4-DDD, 4,4-DDE, 4,4-DDT, α-endosulfan and β-endosulfan were analyzed in water samples (drinking water, stream water and river water) with separation/detection by gas chromatography and electron capture detection (GC/ECD). The parameters that can affect the sample preparation efficiency such as desorption solvent and time as well as extraction time and ionic strength were evaluated by multivariate and univariate designs.

Delivering appropriate stimuli remains a challenge in vision research, particularly for aquatic animals such as zebrafish. Due to the shape of the water tank and the associated optical paths of light rays, the stimulus can be subject to unwanted refraction or reflection artifacts, which may spoil the experiment and result in wrong conclusions. Here, we employ computer graphics simulations and calcium imaging in the zebrafish optic tectum to show, how a spherical glass container optically outperforms many previously used water containers, including Petri dish lids.
