The effect of oral inoculation with anaerobic cultures of cecal microflora and providing lactose in the feed on colonization resistance to invasive Salmonella enteritidis was evaluated in newly hatched leghorn chicks. Salmonella colonization of the ceca, tissue invasion and organ colonization, horizontal transmission, and seroconversion were significantly decreased (P less than 0.01) in chicks inoculated with cecal flora.

The ability of anaerobic cultures from mature chicken cecal material stored at -70 C for 1 or 10 mo to reduce Salmonella typhimurium colonization of the ceca of young chicks was evaluated. Chick treatments consisted of per os inoculation with anaerobic cultures from the cecal materials and providing or not providing the chicks dietary lactose. Chicks were challenged per os at 3 days of age with 10(6) S.

The combined effect of treatments with dietary lactose plus anaerobic organisms on cecal colonization of broiler chicks by Salmonella typhimurium was evaluated. Chickens treated with a combination of anaerobic organisms and 7% dietary lactose were resistant to cecal colonization by S. typhimurium.

The effect of providing lactose in feed and inoculation with volatile fatty acid-producing anaerobic cultures (AC) of cecal flora on Salmonella typhimurium colonization was evaluated in broilers. One-day-old chicks were divided into four groups and provided 1) no lactose, no AC; 2) AC, no lactose; 3) AC and lactose on days 1-10; or 4) AC and lactose on days 1-40. All groups were challenged per os with 10(6) Salmonella on day 3 and with 10(8) Salmonella on day 33.

The effect of dietary lactose and anaerobic cultures of cecal microflora of mature chickens on the colonization of young broiler chickens by Salmonella typhimurium was evaluated. Newly hatched chicks were given either no treatment (controls), anaerobic cecal cultures, lactose (2.5%) in the drinking water, or both anaerobic cultures and lactose.

One-day-old broiler chicks were inoculated with volatile fatty acid producing cecal flora from adult chickens. The chicks were divided into four groups and provided 1) no lactose, 2) 2.5% lactose in water, 3) 5% lactose in feed, or 4) 10% lactose in feed, until 10 days of age.

A prospective study was carried out to compare blood loss from various types of nasal surgery, to investigate how accurately this loss was estimated during surgery and to find out how soon any losses were replenished. Blood loss during surgery was estimated, and by serial blood tests actual blood loss and continuing changes in haematological parameters were recorded. It was found that blood loss was highest when a nasal polypectomy and submucous resection were performed together and over the whole range of nasal surgery studied the actual blood loss was more than double the estimate during surgery.

Dietitians must be responsive to the changing needs of their clients and employers, to societal concerns, and to legal mandates. A recently passed amendment (PL 99-457) to the Federal Education for the Handicapped Act gives nutrition professionals the opportunity to have a voice in establishing nutrition policy and standards of care for young handicapped and high-risk children. The new law extends preventive services to children as young as 3 years of age, and Part H of the law provides financial incentives for states to provide services to children with special health care needs from birth to 2 years of age.

A study was conducted to ascertain whether there is any relationship between parenteral smoking and various factors in children undergoing surgery for otitis media with effusion. Information was recorded on 115 children admitted to hospital for grommet insertion. Details of parenteral smoking habits, previous surgery for otitis media with effusion and operative findings were noted.

The correlation of histopathologic findings with duplex Doppler sonography (DDS) in 24 biopsies in 21 patients was studied. The resistive indices (RI) of the acute rejection group were statistically different (p = .04) from those that were negative for rejection or clinical controls.

A study was conducted on seventy children to ascertain any relationship between parental smoking and the presence of middle ear effusions in the children. Information was collected using a questionnaire, clinical examination and audiological tests. Both groups of children (with and without effusions) had similar age, sex and social class distributions.

We report a case of congenital hypoplasia of the larynx and trachea in the presence of an essentially normal cartilaginous structure. To our knowledge this abnormality is not recognised in the literature. Previously reported hypoplastic laryngeal anomalies have all shown anatomical defects ranging from clefts to atresia (Smith and Bain 1965, Gatti et al.

We report a case of Kikuchi's disease presenting as cervical lymphadenopathy in an adolescent. The original histological diagnosis in this case was a metastatic neoplasm. We wish to highlight the importance of this rare condition because of its potential for mimicking malignancy.

We conducted a double-blind trial with the calcium antagonist, diltiazem (8 mg/kg/d), for 24 to 32 months in 22 boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, who were paired by functional activity and age. No adverse clinical or ECG effects of diltiazem were detected. In eight matched pairs, completing 28 months, manual muscle testing scores fell somewhat less in the diltiazem group (from 5.

Primary adenocarcinoma of the fallopian tube is a rare neoplasm that constitutes less than 1% of gynecologic malignancies. Although the triad of menorrhagia, leukorrhea, and pain is said to be pathognomonic, preoperative diagnosis of this lesion is most unusual. The radiographic appearance at hysterosalpingography has only rarely been described in the English literature previously.
