We identify problematic areas throughout the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) pipeline that perpetuate racial disparities in academia. Distinct ways to curtail these disparities include early exposure and access to resources, supportive mentoring networks and comprehensive training programs specifically for racially minoritized students and trainees at each career stage. These actions will revitalize the STEM pipeline.

Aberrant redox signaling underlies the pathophysiology of many chronic metabolic diseases, including type 2 diabetes (T2D). Methodologies aimed at rebalancing systemic redox homeostasis have had limited success. A noninvasive, sustained approach would enable the long-term control of redox signaling for the treatment of T2D.

Association of Beta Blocker Use With Bone Mineral Density in the Framingham Osteoporosis Study: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Some, but not all, prior observational studies have shown that beta blocker (BB) use is associated with lower fracture risk and higher bone mineral density (BMD). Rodent studies show the mechanism to involve the reduction in the effects of beta-adrenergic signaling on bone remodeling. Because previous studies did not have detailed information on dose, duration, and beta-1 selectivity, we examined these in a cross-sectional analysis of the association between BB use and hip and spine BMD using DXA with the Offspring Cohort of the Framingham Heart Study.

Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) is cyanotic CHD with known fetal growth restriction and placental abnormalities. Transposition of the great arteries (TGA) is cyanotic CHD with normal fetal growth.

Class III obesity rather than metabolic syndrome impacts clinical outcomes of acute pancreatitis: A propensity score weighted analysis.

Objectives: The incidence rates of acute pancreatitis (AP) and the prevalence of class III obesity, and metabolic syndrome (MetS) are increasing in the US. Since class III obesity was associated with adverse clinical outcomes of AP, we sought to understand if the presence of metabolic comorbidities collectively recognized, as MetS were associated with worse clinical outcomes and increased health-care utilization.

Methods: The Nationwide Readmissions Database (NRD) (2010-2014) was reviewed to identify all adult subjects with a principal discharge diagnosis of AP.

Abstract: Contaminated poultry meat is a major source of human foodborne illnesses. Many interventions have been developed to reduce and/or eliminate human foodborne pathogens in poultry products; however, treatments with cold plasma or carnosine or their combination have not been extensively investigated. In this study, the bacterial microflora of poultry meat samples after treatments with cold plasma and carnosine were characterized with EcoPlates in the OmniLog system.

Background: A significant challenge to overcome in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is the profound systemic immunosuppression that renders this disease non-responsive to immunotherapy. Our supporting data provide evidence that CD200, a regulator of myeloid cell activity, is expressed in the PDAC microenvironment. Additionally, myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC) isolated from patients with PDAC express elevated levels of the CD200 receptor (CD200R).

Stress-Induced Cyclin C Translocation Regulates Cardiac Mitochondrial Dynamics.

Background Nuclear-to-mitochondrial communication regulating gene expression and mitochondrial function is a critical process following cardiac ischemic injury. In this study, we determined that cyclin C, a component of the Mediator complex, regulates cardiac and mitochondrial function in part by modifying mitochondrial fission. We tested the hypothesis that cyclin C functions as a transcriptional cofactor in the nucleus and a signaling molecule stimulating mitochondrial fission in response to stimuli such as cardiac ischemia.

Alcohol-Related Dermatitis: A Review.

: Wine, beer, liquor, and spirits are widely consumed in many cultures across the globe, and for some individuals, ingestion, cutaneous contact, or other exposure can lead to dermatologic findings. However, there currently exist no comprehensive reviews on alcohol-related dermatitis. Herein, we will provide an overview of alcohol-related dermatitis and contact urticaria, including the epidemiology and clinical manifestations, potential allergens found in alcoholic beverages, testing approaches, and strategies for allergen avoidance.

Dose-Dependent Increases in Ellagitannin Metabolites as Biomarkers of Intake in Humans Consuming Standardized Black Raspberry Food Products Designed for Clinical Trials.

Scope: Black raspberry (BRB) phytochemicals demonstrate anti-carcinogenic properties in experimental models, including prostate cancer. Two BRB foods, a confection and nectar, providing a consistent and reproducible product for human clinical studies are designed and characterized.

Methods And Results: Men with clinically localized prostate cancer are sequentially enrolled to a control group or one of four intervention groups (confection or nectar, 10 or 20 g dose; n = 8 per group) for 4 weeks prior to prostatectomy.

Research Note: Evaluation of several inoculation procedures for colonization of day-old broiler chicks with Salmonella Heidelberg.

Before starting a study with many birds, it helps to know the method of chick inoculation. The objective was to compare 3 methods of Salmonella challenge (oral gavage [OR], intracloacal inoculation [IC], and seeder bird [SB]). Day-old broiler chicks (n = 100) were inoculated with 10 colony forming units (CFU) per chick of a marker strain of Salmonella Heidelberg (SH) with each route of inoculation.

Changing epidemiology of esophageal stent placement for dysphagia: a decade of trends and the impact of benign indications.

Background And Aims: In addition to managing malignant obstruction, esophageal stents (ESs) have evolved to address various benign etiologies of dysphagia. We sought to evaluate national trends and changes in practice of ES placement for both benign and malignant etiologies in hospitalized patients with dysphagia.

Methods: The National Inpatient Sample (2003-2013) was used to include all adult inpatients (≥18 years of age) with endoscopy-guided ES placement for a symptom of dysphagia.

Abstract: Campylobacter is an organism of concern for food safety and is one of the leading causes of foodborne bacterial gastroenteritis. This pathogen can be found in broiler chickens, and the level of allowable contamination of processed poultry is regulated by federal agency guidelines. Traditional methods for detecting and isolating this pathogen from broiler chicken carcasses require time, expensive reagents, and artificially generated microaerophilic atmospheres.

Objectives: There is a paucity of literature assessing the impact of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) availability at hospitals and the management of acute biliary pancreatitis (ABP). Thus, we sought to evaluate the impact of ERCP availability on the clinical outcomes of ABP.

Methods: The Nationwide Inpatient Sample (2004-2013) was reviewed to identify adult inpatients (≥18 years) with ABP.

Clinically, reactions may range from acute and self-limited to chronic and recurrent. Delays in diagnosis are not uncommon due to complex clinical presentations, broad differentials, and limited number of specialists who perform phototesting.

To provide safer food, many technologies have been used to preserve food. One such technology is cold plasma, which can reduce viable bacterial counts in various food matrices. However, bacterial communities in food matrices before and after cold plasma treatment have not been investigated.

Background And Aim: Cirrhosis-related complications are associated with high inpatient mortality, cost, and length of stay. There is a lack of multi-centered studies on interventions for hepatic hydrothorax and its impact on patient outcomes. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of performing thoracentesis for hepatic hydrothorax on hospital length of stay, mortality, cost, and 30-day readmission.

Background And Aim: Despite higher rates of gallstones in patients with cirrhosis, there are no population-based studies evaluating outcomes of acute biliary pancreatitis (ABP). Therefore, we sought to evaluate the predictors of early readmission and mortality in this high-risk population.

Methods: We utilized the Nationwide Readmission Database (2011-2014) to evaluate all adults admitted with ABP.

Introduction And Aim: Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a common complication in cirrhotics and is associated with an increased healthcare burden. Our aim was to study independent predictors of 30-day readmission and develop a readmission risk model in patients with HE. Secondary aims included studying readmission rates, cost, and the impact of readmission on mortality.

Introduction And Aim: Previous studies have identified treatment disparities in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) based on insurance status and provider. Recent studies have shown more Americans have healthcare insurance; therefore we aim to determine if treatment disparities based on insurance providers continue to exist.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective database analysis using the NIS was performed between 2010 and 2013 including adult patients with a primary diagnosis of HCC determined by ICD-9 codes.

Steroid receptor coactivator-1 modulates the function of Pomc neurons and energy homeostasis.

Hypothalamic neurons expressing the anorectic peptide Pro-opiomelanocortin (Pomc) regulate food intake and body weight. Here, we show that Steroid Receptor Coactivator-1 (SRC-1) interacts with a target of leptin receptor activation, phosphorylated STAT3, to potentiate Pomc transcription. Deletion of SRC-1 in Pomc neurons in mice attenuates their depolarization by leptin, decreases Pomc expression and increases food intake leading to high-fat diet-induced obesity.
