Marine fisheries are increasingly impacted by climate change, affecting species distribution and productivity, and necessitating urgent adaptation efforts. Climate vulnerability assessments (CVA), integrating expert knowledge, are vital for identifying species that could thrive or suffer under changing environmental conditions. This study presents a first CVA for the Western Baltic Sea's fish community, a crucial fishing area for Denmark and Germany.

Understanding individual growth in commercially exploited fish populations is key to successful stock assessment and informed ecosystem-based fisheries management. Traditionally, growth rates in marine fish are estimated using otolith age-readings in combination with age-length relationships from field samples, or tag-recapture field experiments. However, for some species, otolith-based approaches have been proven unreliable and tag-recapture experiments suffer from high working effort and costs as well as low recapture rates.

Aberrant CD4 T cell reactivity against intestinal microorganisms is considered to drive mucosal inflammation in inflammatory bowel diseases. The disease-relevant microbial species and the corresponding microorganism-specific, pathogenic T cell phenotypes remain largely unknown. In the present study, we identified common gut commensal and food-derived yeasts, as direct activators of altered CD4 T cell reactions in patients with Crohn's disease (CD).

Landfill leachate is one of the major point sources of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) pollution. In this study, powdered activated carbon (PAC), granular activated carbon (GAC), anion exchange resin (AIX), nanofiltration (NF), ozonation, and foam fractionation were tested for treatment of the same leachate. These methods were compared in terms of PFAS removal efficiencies and treatment cost.

Article Synopsis
  • The ENHANCE study assessed the efficacy and safety of seladelpar, a PPAR-δ agonist, in patients with primary biliary cholangitis who didn't respond well to or couldn't tolerate traditional treatment with UDCA.
  • Participants were divided into three groups receiving either seladelpar (5 mg or 10 mg) or a placebo, with the primary goal of measuring liver function improvements after 12 months.
  • Results showed that patients receiving 10 mg of seladelpar had significant liver function improvements and reduced itching compared to placebo, and the treatment was deemed safe with no serious side effects reported.

Background & Aims: Nucleos(t)ide analogues (NUCs) are the standard and mostly lifelong treatment for chronic HBeAg-negative hepatitis B, as functional cure (loss of HBsAg) is rarely achieved. Discontinuation of NUC treatment may lead to functional cure; however, to date, the evidence for this has been based on small or non-randomized clinical trials. The STOP-NUC trial was designed with the aim of increasing the HBsAg loss rate using a NUC treatment interruption approach.

We establish how the Breitenlohner-Freedman (BF) bound is realized on tilings of two-dimensional Euclidean Anti-de Sitter space. For the continuum, the BF bound states that on Anti-de Sitter spaces, fluctuation modes remain stable for small negative mass squared m^{2}. This follows from a real and positive total energy of the gravitational system.

Despite the availability of highly effective and well-tolerated direct-acting antivirals, not all patients with chronic hepatitis C virus infection receive treatment. This retrospective, multi-centre, noninterventional, case-control study identified patients with chronic hepatitis C virus infection initiating (control) or not initiating (case) treatment at 43 sites in Germany from September 2017 to June 2018. It aimed to compare characteristics of the two patient populations and to identify factors involved in patient/physician decision to initiate/not initiate chronic hepatitis C virus treatment, with a particular focus on historical barriers.

Background: Clinical practice guidelines for patients with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) have been recently revised and implemented for well-established response criteria to standard first-line ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) therapy at 12 months after treatment initiation for the early identification of high-risk patients with inadequate treatment responses who may require treatment modification. However, there are only very limited data concerning the real-world clinical management of patients with PBC in Germany.

Objective: The aim of this retrospective multicenter study was to evaluate response rates to standard first-line UDCA therapy and subsequent Second-line treatment regimens in a large cohort of well-characterized patients with PBC from 10 independent hepatological referral centers in Germany prior to the introduction of obeticholic acid as a licensed second-line treatment option.

Predators not only have direct impact on biomass but also indirect, non-consumptive effects on the behavior their prey organisms. A characteristic response of zooplankton in aquatic ecosystems is predator avoidance by diel vertical migration (DVM), a behavior which is well studied on the population level. A wide range of behavioral diversity and plasticity has been observed both between- as well as within-species and, hence, investigating predator-prey interactions at the individual level seems therefore essential for a better understanding of zooplankton dynamics.

Background&aims: The presence of baseline resistance-associated substitutions (RASs) reduced sustained virologic response (SVR) rates in chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1a infected patients treated with Elbasvir/Grazoprevir (EBR/GZR). This study aimed to evaluate the frequency of NS5A RASs and treatment outcomes in patients for whom EBR/GZR was intended.

Methods: We sequenced NS5A in 832 samples from German genotype1a-infected DAA-naïve patients population-based, which were collected in the European Resistance Database.

Background: For treatment of genotype 1a (GT1a) infection with elbasvir/grazoprevir, the German guidelines recommend a differentiated approach depending on baseline viral load (BVL). For low BVL ≤800 000 IU/mL, treatment with 12 weeks elbasvir/grazoprevir should be considered, whereas for high BVL >800 000 IU/mL, this regimen is only recommended in nonstructural protein 5A (NS5A) resistance-associated substitutions (RAS) absence. With present NS5A RAS or when RAS-testing is not available, 16 weeks elbasvir/grazoprevir + ribavirin is preferred.

Background: Accurate assessment of hepatic fibrosis in patients with chronic HBeAg-negative Hepatitis B is of crucial importance not only to predict the long-term clinical course, but also to evaluate antiviral therapy indication. The aim of this study was to prospectively assess the utility of point shear wave elastography (pSWE) for longitudinal non-invasive fibrosis assessment in a large cohort of untreated patients with chronic HBeAg-negative hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection.

Methods: 407 consecutive patients with HBeAg-negative HBV infection who underwent pSWE, transient elastography (TE) as well as laboratory fibrosis markers, including fibrosis index based on four factors (FIB-4), aspartate to platelet ratio index (APRI) and FibroTest, on the same day were prospectively followed up for six years.

Article Synopsis
  • Hepatitis C virus infection can lead to serious health issues like chronic liver disease and liver cancer, but treatment with direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) can lead to high rates of sustained virologic response (SVR).
  • After failing DAA treatment, patients often develop resistance-associated substitutions (RASs), particularly in the NS5A protein, which can complicate future treatment options.
  • Recently approved second-generation DAA regimens like voxilaprevir/velpatasvir/sofosbuvir provide new retreatment options, but these are often unavailable or not covered by insurance in many countries, emphasizing the need to analyze the effectiveness of first-generation DAAs for re-treatment.

Background: Direct-acting antiviral agents (DAAs) have revolutionized treatment of chronic hepatitis C in patients with normal glomerular filtration rate (GFR). However, patients with impaired kidney function have been excluded from several clinical trials. We, therefore, investigated the use, effectiveness, and tolerability of DAAs in patients with GFR less than 30 ml/min in the real-world setting.

Genetic data have great potential for improving fisheries management by identifying the fundamental management units-that is, the biological populations-and their mixing. However, so far, the number of practical cases of marine fisheries management using genetics has been limited. Here, we used Atlantic cod in the Baltic Sea to demonstrate the applicability of genetics to a complex management scenario involving mixing of two genetically divergent populations.

Objective: Homozygous alpha1-antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency increases the risk for developing cirrhosis, whereas the relevance of heterozygous carriage remains unclear. Hence, we evaluated the impact of the two most relevant AAT variants ('Pi*Z' and 'Pi*S'), present in up to 10% of Caucasians, on subjects with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) or alcohol misuse.

Design: We analysed multicentric case-control cohorts consisting of 1184 people with biopsy-proven NAFLD and of 2462 people with chronic alcohol misuse, both cohorts comprising cases with cirrhosis and controls without cirrhosis.

In this paper we study the one-dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation with correlated noise by field-theoretic dynamic renormalization-group techniques. We focus on spatially correlated noise where the correlations are characterized by a sinc profile in Fourier space with a certain correlation length ξ. The influence of this correlation length on the dynamics of the KPZ equation is analyzed.
