Extra-adrenal paragangliomas associated with vertebral pain and clinical neurological abnormalities as a result of metastasis to the vertebral column were diagnosed in four dogs of different breeds by light microscopy. All were males (two intact and two neutered) aged 8 years. Metastatic neoplasms occurred as extradural masses with associated bone lysis at vertebrae C4 (2 cases), T12-L1 (1 case) and L4 (1 case).

Because of the rising incidence of clinical mycobacterial infections and the difficulty in identification and characterization of mycobacteria at the subspecies and serovar levels, a technique for differentiation that could be performed quickly and with relatively little equipment and expense was developed. Lysis and fractionation of mycobacteria by matrix solid-phase dispersion followed by thin-layer chromatography were used to produce chemotype profiles of the lipid and glycolipid components of each isolate. Organisms tested included Mycobacterium scrofulaceum, Mycobacterium phlei, Mycobacterium smegmatis, Mycobacterium flavescens, Mycobacterium kansasii, Mycobacterium bovis, 11 isolates of Mycobacterium gordonae, 10 serovars of Mycobacterium avium, and four strains of Mycobacterium paratuberculosis.

The isolation of drug residues, environmental contaminants or naturally occurring component molecules from biological materials is often a complex undertaking. We report here the development and application of a simple approach to the disruption of biological samples that also allows for the rapid fractionation and isolation of the sample's natural components or incurred residues. This process, called matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD), combines the use of mechanical forces generated from the grinding of samples with irregular shaped particles (silica or polymer based solid supports) with the lipid solubilizing capacity of a support-bound polymer (octadecylsilyl or others) to produce a sample column material from which dispersed sample matrix components can be selectively isolated.

A 12-year-old female sarus crane (Grus antigone) developed a recurrent proliferative lesion in the subcutaneous tissue of the tarsometatarsus, which failed to respond to medical and surgical therapy. The crane was killed and microscopic examination of the tissues taken at necropsy revealed a myxomatous, poorly-differentiated sarcoma with metastasis to the liver and kidney. Immunohistochemical staining for muscle actin, smooth muscle myosin and vimentin were positive, indicating that the primary and metastatic tumours were leiomyosarcomas.

Glycolipid fractions from Mycobacterium avium serovar 2 (Mycobacterium paratuberculosis 18) inhibited the killing of Candida albicans by activated bovine peripheral-blood-derived macrophages. Fractions were derived by using the matrix solid-phase dispersion technique, which is a new method of simultaneous lysis and partial fractionation of components of bacterial cells. Further purification of active fractions was performed by concanavalin A affinity chromatography, centrifugal filtration, and differing solvent solubility.

Consistent with previous reports by neuropsychiatrists, the results of the present investigation confirmed the existence of a neurobehavioral disorder characterized by the subjective experiencing of multiple cognitive, affective, and psychosensory phenomena similar to those associated with more classic partial seizure disorders. According to the literature, such patients typically respond favorably to anticonvulsants although they lack the customary motor manifestations of complex partial seizure (CPS) disorders and typically do not have stereotyped spells. This neuropsychiatric syndrome has recently been termed epilepsy spectrum disorder (ESD).

Sex differences are described in subregions of two nuclei of the rat brain: the medical nucleus of the amygdala (MA) and the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST). The volume of the posterodorsal region of the medial nucleus of the amygdala (MApd) is approximately 85% greater and the volume of the encapsulated region of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNSTenc) is approximately 97% greater in males than in females. The MApd and BNSTenc are distinct subregions of the MA and BNST.

Normal volunteers (28 women), 20-45 years old, completed tests of visuospatial ability, verbal fluency, and language lateralization, and the midsagittal surface areas of the splenium, isthmus, midregion, and genu of the corpus callosum were measured from inversion recovery magnetic resonance images. Multivariate statistics were used to analyze patterns of correlations. Verbal fluency correlated positively with the area of the splenium and with the area of a posterior callosal factor defined largely by the splenium.

Conventional topical slush cooling limits lung transport to 4 to 6 hours. For this canine study of an alternate air cooling system, 37 canine lungs were removed: 24 were placed in plastic bags, and inserted in a Transplanthermm container at core air temperatures (n = 6 lungs each) of (A) 4 degrees C, (B) 8 degrees C, (C) 12 degrees C, and (D) 20 degrees C; 6 were stored conventionally in ice slush (E); and 7 were transplanted immediately (F). After 8 hours, the stored lungs were transplanted and the contralateral pulmonary artery was ligated.

The calculations made use of recent determinations of ionic channel densities in the internodal axolemma of Xenopus fibers. To reverse accidental extubation in the burn patient, a guide-wire can be passed retrograde through the cricothyroid membrane, and a thin tube changer can be placed over the guide-wire and down through the edematous airway and vocal cords. An endotracheal tube can then be passed over the tube changer to rapidly regain airway access.

A computer program has been developed for simulation of electrical activity in neurons with complex branching morphology, multiple channel types, and inhomogeneous channel distribution. The program is based around an interpreter and screen editor for flexible specification of nerve properties and analysis of simulation results. Efficient simulation of the nerve specification is accomplished with procedure calls to fast, compiled routines for integration of the nerve equations.

A quantitative analysis of the volume of 4 cell groups in the preoptic-anterior hypothalamic area (PO-AHA) and of the supraoptic nucleus (SON) of the human brain was performed in 22 age-matched male and female individuals. We suggest the term Interstitial Nuclei of the Anterior Hypothalamus (INAH 1-4) to identify these 4 previously undescribed cell groups in the PO-AHA. While 2 INAH and the SON were not sexually dimorphic, gender-related differences were found in the other 2 cell groups.

We performed 84 intraocular pressure measurements with the Oculab Tono-Pen, Goldmann applanation tonometer, and pneumatic tonometer in 47 eyes that had undergone pars plana vitrectomy and gas-fluid exchange. Measurements made by using the Tono-Pen were accurate when compared to those made by Goldmann tonometry (mean difference, 0.74 mm Hg).

In the hope of identifying an animal model for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) we undertook a pilot investigation of aged rhesus monkeys. Twenty-nine monkeys from a seminatural colony were examined at the Caribbean Primate Research Center. Macular drusen were found in 74% of the monkey eyes.

In this paper a dynamic model to investigate interphalangeal coordination in the human finger is proposed. Suitable models which describe the relationship between the tendon displacement and the joint angles have been chosen and incorporated into the skeletal dynamic model. A kinematic and kinetic model for interphalangeal coordination is suggested.

We administered the synthetic estrogen, diethylstilbestrol (DES), or the antiestrogen, tamoxifen, to pregnant guinea pigs and observed the consequences for sexual differentiation of their female offspring. Hormones were administered during the period when treatment of fetuses with testosterone influences the development of sex-related traits (approximately Days 30 to 65 of gestation). Ovarian function, masculine and feminine sexual behavior, and the structure of a sexually dimorphic neural region in the preoptic area were assessed in adulthood in hormone-exposed animals and in oil-treated and untreated controls.
