Impact of and variants on HIV-1 susceptibility and progression to AIDS: a case-control study in a Moroccan population.

Interleukin-6 (IL-6), a pro-inflammatory cytokine, is an important regulator of the inflammatory immune response. We aimed to assess the association of common single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in (rs1800795 G > C, rs1800797 A > G) and () (rs2228145 A > C) genes with HIV-1 infection, AIDS progression, and response to treatment. In this case-control study involving 199 individuals living with HIV-1 and 200 HIV-uninfected controls, we conducted genotyping of SNPs using TaqMan real-time PCR assays.

Assessment and management of delirium in a tertiary hospital-Improvements in cognitive screening and use of non-pharmacological strategies with a multidisciplinary approach.

Objective: This series of audits aimed to determine current best practice in delirium management in a tertiary teaching hospital and to identify strategies to improve the quality of care in delirium with a focus on prevention.

Methods: We completed a series of audits following the formation of the Cognitive Impairment Reference Group, a multidisciplinary team that was created to implement delirium management guidelines and monitor compliance. Audit 1 focused on antipsychotic use in patients aged 66 years and older.

Impact of the first-line antiretroviral therapy on soluble markers of inflammation in cohort of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 in Moroccan patients: a prospective study.

Chronic inflammation and immune activation are a hallmark of HIV-1 infection. In this study, we assessed inflammation biomarkers in a cohort of people living with HIV-1 (PLWH) before and after long-term suppressive combined antiretroviral therapy (cART). A single-center prospective cohort study was conducted to assess inflammatory biomarkers in 86 cART-naive PLWH and after receiving suppressive cART and 50 uninfected controls.

Endometriosis Causing Large Bowel Obstruction: A Case Report.

Endometriosis is defined as the presence of endometrial glands and stroma in ectopic locations, with extrapelvic sites being less commonly affected. Only a few cases of colonic endometriosis causing acute bowel obstruction have been reported in the literature, in which resection and primary anastomosis were the treatments performed. We present the case of a 40-year-old female who presented with signs and symptoms of acute large bowel obstruction thought to be due to malignancy; however, further evaluation confirmed the diagnosis of rectosigmoid endometriosis.

Impact of Quran in Treatment of the Psychological Disorder and Spiritual Illness.

This paper studies the effect of Quranic therapy on psychological diseases and spiritual diseases. The experiments have been conducted on a random sample with 121 patients from both genders. The procedures that have been followed were different sessions with the patients, who were given some verses from the Holy Quran to listen within a specific period of time.

Articles cited were usually published in other OMFS journals (40%) or dentistry journals (32%). Calcium Antagonists Use and Its Association with Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background: Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) have been reported amongst the side effects of calcium antagonists (CA). CAs act on the bladder by affecting the ability of the detrusor muscle to create enough contractile force to overcome obstruction to normal voiding. We aimed to determine the relationship between CA use and LUTS in general medical inpatients.

Prevalence and Determinants of Waterpipe Tobacco Use among Adolescents in Oman.

Objective: To assess the prevalence and determinants of waterpipe use among school-going adolescents in Oman.

Methods: A cross-sectional, school-based study was conducted in 2003 involving 9 regions of Oman, as part of the Global Youth Tobacco Survey. Participants were requested to complete an anonymous questionnaire containing demographic characteristics, current and previous use of waterpipe tobacco, attitudes towards cigarette smoking, parents' and friends' cigarette smoking habits.

Bronchial mucus transport velocity in patients receiving anaesthesia with propofol and morphine or propofol and remifentanil.

In vitro morphine does not reduce cilia beat frequency, a key factor determining bronchial mucus transport velocity. There are no reports about the effect of remifentanil on bronchial mucus transport. We compared the bronchial mucus transport velocity in patients having total intravenous anaesthesia with either propofol and morphine, or propofol and remifentanil.

Zinc finger proteins in the peripheral nerve of adult normal and Trembler mice.

By using monoclonal antibodies directed against the conserved zinc binding site of zinc finger proteins, we detected 2 prominent zinc finger proteins in rat peripheral nervous system (PNS) during development, and in adult normal and Trembler mice sciatic nerves. The protein of 55 kDa is abundant in adult normal mice and rats, but is weakly expressed in adult Trembler mice. The 29 kDa protein is expressed in neonatal rats and in the Trembler mouse, but is absent in adult rats and mice.

Three different anti-myelin antibodies in a case of demyelinating dysglobulinemic peripheral neuropathy.

We report the case of a patient with a severe, predominantly motor, demyelinating neuropathy associated with an IgM kappa biclonal gammopathy. Immunoblot studies showed IgM reactivity against MAG, and IgG reactivity against a peripheral nerve myelin-specific protein of approximately 35 kDa. Immunodetection by thin layer chromatography showed IgM reactivity towards GM1 and GD1b, as well as towards SGPG and SGLPG.

Myelin P0 glycoprotein: identification of the site phosphorylated in vitro and in vivo by endogenous protein kinases.

Myelin membrane prepared from mouse sciatic nerve possesses both kinase and substrates to incorporate [32P]PO4(3-) from [gamma-32P]ATP into protein constituents.
