The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), a retrovirus targeting the immune system and the primary agent causing acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), can have fatal consequences. Although antiretroviral treatment has significantly reduced mortality and comorbidity in people living with HIV (PLHIV), its impact on metabolic syndrome (MetS) remains notable. Several genome-wide association studies have identified a link between the gene () and MetS, particularly in type 2 diabetes.

Interleukin-6 (IL-6), a pro-inflammatory cytokine, is an important regulator of the inflammatory immune response. We aimed to assess the association of common single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in (rs1800795 G > C, rs1800797 A > G) and () (rs2228145 A > C) genes with HIV-1 infection, AIDS progression, and response to treatment. In this case-control study involving 199 individuals living with HIV-1 and 200 HIV-uninfected controls, we conducted genotyping of SNPs using TaqMan real-time PCR assays.

Methods: We completed a series of audits following the formation of the Cognitive Impairment Reference Group, a multidisciplinary team that was created to implement delirium management guidelines and monitor compliance. Audit 1 focused on antipsychotic use in patients aged 66 years and older.
Chronic inflammation and immune activation are a hallmark of HIV-1 infection. In this study, we assessed inflammation biomarkers in a cohort of people living with HIV-1 (PLWH) before and after long-term suppressive combined antiretroviral therapy (cART). A single-center prospective cohort study was conducted to assess inflammatory biomarkers in 86 cART-naive PLWH and after receiving suppressive cART and 50 uninfected controls.

Only a few cases of colonic endometriosis causing acute bowel obstruction have been reported in the literature, in which resection and primary anastomosis were the treatments performed. We present the case of a 40-year-old female who presented with signs and symptoms of acute large bowel obstruction thought to be due to malignancy; however, further evaluation confirmed the diagnosis of rectosigmoid endometriosis.

Systemic manifestations also occur in the majority of patients. There has been increasing interest in recent years, with a number of publications regarding the classification criteria, diagnostic tools, disease activity, damage, impact and potential treatments.

Methods: This is a retrospective study of post mortem cases at Hospital Kuala Lumpur from 2014 to 2016.
This paper studies the effect of Quranic therapy on psychological diseases and spiritual diseases. The experiments have been conducted on a random sample with 121 patients from both genders. The procedures that have been followed were different sessions with the patients, who were given some verses from the Holy Quran to listen within a specific period of time.

In this study we investigate the five most cited articles in the British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (BJOMS). Articles cited were usually published in other OMFS journals (40%) or dentistry journals (32%). The mean (SD) SCImago Journal and Country Rank, (SJR) (an interface to access the bibliometric database of journals) for cited papers was 0.

CAs act on the bladder by affecting the ability of the detrusor muscle to create enough contractile force to overcome obstruction to normal voiding. We aimed to determine the relationship between CA use and LUTS in general medical inpatients.

Objective: To assess the prevalence and determinants of waterpipe use among school-going adolescents in Oman.
Methods: A cross-sectional, school-based study was conducted in 2003 involving 9 regions of Oman, as part of the Global Youth Tobacco Survey. Participants were requested to complete an anonymous questionnaire containing demographic characteristics, current and previous use of waterpipe tobacco, attitudes towards cigarette smoking, parents' and friends' cigarette smoking habits.
In vitro morphine does not reduce cilia beat frequency, a key factor determining bronchial mucus transport velocity. There are no reports about the effect of remifentanil on bronchial mucus transport. We compared the bronchial mucus transport velocity in patients having total intravenous anaesthesia with either propofol and morphine, or propofol and remifentanil.

By using monoclonal antibodies directed against the conserved zinc binding site of zinc finger proteins, we detected 2 prominent zinc finger proteins in rat peripheral nervous system (PNS) during development, and in adult normal and Trembler mice sciatic nerves. The protein of 55 kDa is abundant in adult normal mice and rats, but is weakly expressed in adult Trembler mice. The 29 kDa protein is expressed in neonatal rats and in the Trembler mouse, but is absent in adult rats and mice.

We report the case of a patient with a severe, predominantly motor, demyelinating neuropathy associated with an IgM kappa biclonal gammopathy. Immunoblot studies showed IgM reactivity against MAG, and IgG reactivity against a peripheral nerve myelin-specific protein of approximately 35 kDa. Immunodetection by thin layer chromatography showed IgM reactivity towards GM1 and GD1b, as well as towards SGPG and SGLPG.

Among these, P0 glycoprotein is the major phosphorylated species. To identify the phosphorylated sites, P0 protein was in vitro phosphorylated, purified, and cleaved by CNBr.
