Marine soft sediments play crucial roles in global biogeochemical cycles and biodiversity. Yet, with organisms often hidden in the sediment, they pose challenges for effective monitoring and management. This study introduces a novel approach utilizing sediment microtopography as a proxy for ecosystem functioning and biodiversity.

Method for detection of cerebral blood flow in neurointensive care using longitudinal arterial spin labeling MRI.

Cerebral blood flow (CBF) is carefully monitored in the Neurointensive Care Unit (NICU) to prevent secondary brain insults in patients who have suffered subarachnoid hemorrhage. Including absolute MRI measurements of CBF in the NICU monitoring protocol could add valuable information and potentially improve patient outcomes. This is particularly feasible at Linköping University Hospital, which uniquely has an MRI scanner located in the NICU, enabling longitudinal CBF measurements while eliminating medical transportation risks.

As plastic pollution continues to accumulate at the seafloor, concerns around benthic ecosystem functionality heightens. This research demonstrates the systematic effects of polyester microfibers on seafloor organic matter consumption rates, an important benthic ecosystem function connected to multiple reactions and processes. We used a field-based assay to measure the loss of organic matter, both with and without polyester microfiber contamination.

Diversification of Acrylamide Polymers via Direct Transamidation of Unactivated Tertiary Amides.

Postpolymerization modification offers a versatile strategy for synthesizing complex macromolecules, yet modifying acrylamide polymers like poly(,-dimethylacrylamide) (PDMA) is notoriously challenging due to the inherent stability and low reactivity of amide bonds. In this study, we unveil a novel approach for the direct transamidation of PDMA, leveraging recent advances in the transamidation of unactivated tertiary amide substrates. By exploiting photoiniferter polymerization, we extended this direct transamidation approach to ultrahigh-molecular-weight (UHMW) PDMA, showcasing the unprecedented postpolymerization modification of synthetic polymers exceeding 10 g/mol.

Academic Abstract: In the present review, we propose a theory that seeks to recontextualize various existing theories as functions of people's perceptions of their consistency with those around them. This theory posits that people seek social consistency for both epistemic and relational needs and that social inconsistency is both negative and aversive, similar to the experience of cognitive dissonance. We further posit that the aversive nature of perceiving social inconsistency leads people to engage in various behaviors to mitigate or avoid these inconsistencies.

Analysis of laser Doppler flowmetry long-term recordings for investigation of cerebral microcirculation during neurointensive care.

Cerebral blood flow is monitored in the neurointensive care unit (NICU) to avoid further brain damage caused by secondary insults following subarachnoid hemorrhage and brain trauma. The influence of mussel restoration on coastal carbon cycling.

Increasing responsiveness to anthropogenic climate change and the loss of global shellfish ecosystems has heightened interest in the carbon storage and sequestration potential of bivalve-dominated systems. While coastal ecosystems are dynamic zones of carbon transformation and change, current uncertainties and notable heterogeneity in the benthic environment make it difficult to ascertain the climate change mitigation capacity of ongoing coastal restoration projects aimed at revitalizing benthic bivalve populations. In this study we sought to distinguish between direct and indirect effects of subtidal green-lipped mussels (Perna canaliculus) on carbon cycling, and combined published literature with in-situ experiments from restored beds to create a carbon budget for New Zealand's shellfish restoration efforts.
