Case Summary: A 6-month-old male entire domestic shorthair cat was presented to the ophthalmology department for nasolacrimal duct cannulation and flushing, and castration under general anaesthesia. On pre-anaesthetic assessment, the cat had a heart rate of 90 beats/min (bpm). Clinical examination was unremarkable, although the cat appeared stressed.

Existing studies assessing efficacy rely on pain scoring by experienced clinicians. However, following OVH, most cats are discharged within hours of recovery.

In this study, we seek to investigate the ability with which 24 oral and maxillofacial (OMF) surgeons assess the presence of periapical lucencies on panoramic radiographs, and we compare these findings to the performance of a predictive deep learning algorithm that we have developed using a curated data set of 2902 de-identified panoramic radiographs. The mean diagnostic positive predictive value (PPV) of OMF surgeons based on their assessment of panoramic radiographic images was 0.

Introduction: Standardization of BCR-ABL1 messenger RNA quantification by real-time PCR on the International Scale (IS) is critical for monitoring therapy response in chronic myelogenous leukaemia. Since 2006, BCR-ABL1 IS standardization is propagated along reference laboratories by calculating a laboratory-specific conversion factor (CF), co-ordinated in Europe through the European Treatment and Outcome Study project. Although this process has proven successful to some extent, it has not been achievable for all laboratories due to the complexity of the process and the stringent requirements in terms of numbers of samples to be exchanged.

However, fixed validation criteria for diagnostic accreditation are not in place because of the great variability in methods and aims. Here, we describe the validation of a custom panel of hotspots in 24 genes for the detection of somatic mutations in non-small cell lung carcinoma, colorectal carcinoma and malignant melanoma starting from FFPE sections, using 14, 36 and 5 cases, respectively.

Accreditation according to the international quality standard ISO15189:2007 for medical laboratories is required for reimbursement of several molecular diagnostic tests in Belgium. Since the ISO15189:2007 standard applies to medical laboratories in general, the particular requirements for quality and competence are mentioned in general terms, not taking into account the specificities of molecular biology testing.

In 1999, aggressive tumor cells were shown to form blood-conducting tubes not lined by endothelial cells, and this phenomenon was termed vasculogenic mimicry. We investigated angiogenesis and the presence of vasculogenic mimicry in colorectal carcinoma in relation to tumor stage, patient survival, and genetic indicators of tumor cell plasticity.

This transgenic mouse is a tool for studies in vascular biology, and is especially of interest for imaging of tumor angiogenesis and the study of anti-angiogenesis strategies in (human) xenografts. Intravital microscopy identified the presence of blood conducting structures that are not lined by endothelial cells.

In order to investigate the prognostic value of leukocyte effector mechanisms, we examined the presence of different subsets of leukocytes in tumor samples of 58 patients diagnosed with primary cutaneous melanoma. The presence of T lymphocytes, cytotoxic T lymphocytes, B lymphocytes, CD16+ cells and macrophages was correlated to Breslow depth.

Background: We and others have shown that angiogenesis and leukocyte infiltration are important prognostic factors in rectal cancer. However, little is known about its possible changes in response to radiotherapy (RTX), which is frequently given to rectal tumors as a neoadjuvant treatment to improve the prognosis. We therefore investigated the biologic effects of RTX on these parameters using fresh-frozen biopsy samples of tumor and normal mucosa tissue before and after RTX.

This technique reveals controversial results on the clinical and prognostic value of angiogenesis in melanoma.

Patch testing revealed delayed type hypersensitivity against the black rubber mix, N-isopropyl-N'-phenyl paraphenylenediamine, N-cyclohexyl-N'-phenyl paraphenylenediamine and the rubber ring situated on the ocular of the respective microscope. This is the first report, to our knowledge, on peri-orbital allergic contact eczema because of sensitization with rubber components of a microscope.

In the present study, we investigated the effect of deferoxamine (DF), an iron chelator with antioxidant capacity, on paraquat toxicity in vitamin E-deficient rats. After the administration of paraquat at a dose of 20 mg/kg the animals were treated with a continuous intravenous infusion of DF for 14 days.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFLiposome encapsulation of doxorubicin (DXR) has been shown to increase the therapeutic index of the drug in several animal systems. The prevention of peak plasma concentrations of free drug might be a major factor contributing to the beneficial effects resulting from liposome encapsulation. If so, the administration of DXR as a continuous infusion should also lead to an improved therapeutic index.

Indapamide was given orally to SHR and WKY rats for 2 weeks at a dose of 5 mg/kg per day. During this period indapamide did not lower blood-pressure in SHR and WKY rats although there was an adequate concentration of indapamide in the blood.
