Eight rare retinal degenerations were chosen to exemplify self-organisation and involvement of patient self-help groups in medical care. They were studied and supported in their development on the following levels: disease-specific groups (level 1), patient organisations (level 2), umbrella organisation (level 3). Databases of defined needs and concerns ("Themenspeicher") of disease-specific patient groups and of patient organisations with respect to care, research and patient networking were established.

A multiresidue gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method was developed to determine 28 priority pesticides of different chemical families (organochlorine, organophosphorus, triazines, anilides) together with some of their transformation products in river sediment. Ultrasonic, Soxhlet and pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) methods were compared in spiking experiments using acetone:hexane (1:1) followed by alumina solid phase extraction cartridges or in-cell alumina clean-up for PLE. All extraction techniques produced acceptable recoveries for the pesticides under study, although Soxhlet extraction produced the lowest recoveries for 2,4-DDE, trifluralin, lindane, and hexachlorobenzene (<50%) whereas ultrasonic extraction resulted in low recoveries for hexachlorobenzene and lindane (<50%).

This review goes back to spectral studies [see Hildebrandt et al., 1968]. The findings of apparent absolute spectra of two interconvertible forms of microsomal mixed function oxidases are looked back on to recall whether their impact sustained scrutiny or are rather remembered as of sentimental value only.

A 42-year-old female patient with acute myeloid leukemia presented with fever and heavy chest pain after her first cycle of specific chemotherapy. Acute myocardial infarction was excluded, but surprisingly, parasitic inclusions in erythrocytes became obvious in Pappenheim and Giemsa-stained peripheral blood smears. The patient did not remember a tick bite but acknowledged having received several blood transfusions in her recent medical history.

Electrostatic interactions play a crucial role in many biomolecular processes, including molecular recognition and binding. Biomolecular electrostatics is modulated to a large extent by the water surrounding the molecules. Here, we present a novel approach to the computation of electrostatic potentials which allows the inclusion of water structure into the classical theory of continuum electrostatics.

Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) was employed for the determination of 30 widely used pesticides including various transformation products and alkylphenols in water and agricultural soils with the aim of assessing the impact of these compounds in agricultural soils and the underlying aquifer. The extraction, clean-up, and analytical procedures were optimized for both water and soil samples to provide a highly robust method capable of determining target analytes at the ppb-ppt level with high precision. For water samples, different solid-phase extraction cartridges and conditions were optimized; similarly, pressurized liquid extraction conditions were tested to provide interference-free extracts and high sensitivity.

Background: The development of effective frameworks that permit an accurate diagnosis of tumors, especially in their early stages, remains a grand challenge in the field of bioinformatics. Our approach uses statistical learning techniques applied to multiple antigen tumor antigen markers utilizing the immune system as a very sensitive marker of molecular pathological processes. For validation purposes we choose the intracranial meningioma tumors as model system since they occur very frequently, are mostly benign, and are genetically stable.

A new peak picking algorithm for the analysis of mass spectrometric (MS) data is presented. It is independent of the underlying machine or ionization method, and is able to resolve highly convoluted and asymmetric signals. The method uses the multiscale nature of spectrometric data by first detecting the mass peaks in the wavelet-transformed signal before a given asymmetric peak function is fitted to the raw data.

A surface plasmon resonance (SPR) based immunosensor has been developed for the monitoring of environmentally persistent pollutants like DDT, its metabolites and analogues in real water samples. A reusable immunosurface is provided via the covalent attachment of the analyte derivative to a self-assembled alkanethiol monolayer formed onto the SPR gold-thin layer. The regeneration of the sensor surface allowed the performance of 270 assay cycles within an analysis time of 20 min for each assay cycle.

Due to their extensive structural heterogeneity, the elucidation of glycosylation patterns in glycoproteins such as the subunits of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), hCG-alpha, and hCG-beta, remains one of the most challenging problems in the proteomic analysis of post-translational modifications. In consequence, glycosylation is usually studied after decomposition of the intact proteins to the proteolytic peptide level. However, by this approach all information about the combination of the different glycopeptides in the intact protein is lost.

Background: The background of this study was the inadequate supply of donor organs in Germany. In Spain, by contrast, a strong increase of organ donors over the past years has created a satisfactory supply situation. Because both countries have similar legal situations, the causes for the drastic differences in organ donation rates remain unclear.

Sampling is considered a crucial step in the analysis of organic compounds in the environment. This review describes field sampling techniques and provides detailed step-by-step procedures for collection and preservation of all major environmental matrices (water, sediment and soil) integrated as part of the river-basin water cycle. Attention is given to the prerequisites for obtaining reliable samples, and the practical issues of sample collection (planning, field sampling, sampling strategies and equipment and data quality assessment) are considered.

The analysis of carbaryl in natural water samples was accomplished using a portable immunosensor based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) technology. The assay was based on a binding inhibition immunoassay format with the analyte derivative covalently immobilized on the sensor surface. An alkanethiol self-assembled monolayer (SAM) was formed onto the gold-coated sensor surface to allow the reusability of the same sensing surface during 220 regeneration cycles.

We have designed a novel transcriptome subtraction method for the genome-scale analysis of differential gene expression in highly complex eukaryotes, in which suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) is performed first to enrich the target and, after exchange of adapters, negative subtraction chain (NSC) is then used to eliminate the remaining background. NSC evolved from differential subtraction chain (DSC). We designed novel adapters which make the subtraction system more robust.

There are numerous studies on the immune response against malignant human tumors. This study was aimed to address the complexity and specificity of humoral immune response against a benign human tumor. We assembled a panel of 62 meningioma-expressed antigens that show reactivity with serum antibodies of meningioma patients, including 41 previously uncharacterized antigens by screening of a fetal brain expression library.

The efficacy of drugs has to be demonstrated following the principal approach of statistical evaluation in controlled clinical trials. This scientifically and internationally accepted numerical approach has developed over the years to its importance, in contrast to the more pharmacologically attempt to extrapolate human efficacy of drugs from data obtained in animal experiments or, to the so-called physiological medicine, which did not allow to delineate the suitability of drugs from a given collective to the individual patient. The requirements for the clinical trial are not always met, especially not with so-called surrogate markers.

Pharmacogenetics, one of the fields of clinical pharmacology, studies how genetic factors influence drug response. If hereditary traits are taken into account appropriately before starting drug treatment, the type of drug and its dosage can be tailored to the individual patient's needs. Pharmacogenetics adds a considerable amount of stringency to the doctor's therapeutic approach.

The accurate modeling of the dielectric properties of water is crucial for many applications in physics, computational chemistry, and molecular biology. This becomes possible in the framework of nonlocal electrostatics, for which we propose a novel formulation allowing for numerical solutions for the nontrivial molecular geometries arising in the applications mentioned before. Our approach is based on the introduction of a secondary field psi, which acts as the potential for the rotation free part of the dielectric displacement field D.
