Incarcerated gravid uterus (IGU) is a rare condition that is associated with urinary obstruction, sepsis, peritonitis, and ultimately maternal death. IGU occurs when the retroverted uterus in a gravid patient becomes trapped in the pelvis during the second trimester. We present the case of a nulliparous female who came to our emergency department (ED) at 14 weeks and five days gestation with new onset intermittent urinary hesitancy and rectal pressure starting approximately 10 days prior to presentation.

Serum levels of apolipoprotein ApoC1 have been described in a number of systemic tumor entities as potential biomarkers, but little is known about ApoC1 in neurosurgical patients. A total of 230 serum samples from 96 patients were analyzed using an ELISA technique. Patient diagnoses comprised 70 glioblastomas WHO IV°, 10 anaplastic astrocytomas III°, one anaplastic oligodendroglioma III°, one oligodendroglioma II°, one diffuse astrocytoma II°, one pilocytic astrocytoma I°, and a single case of a spindle cell tumor without WHO grading, as well as 11 spinal interventions.

The machine-learning paradigm promises traders to reduce uncertainty through better predictions done by ever more complex algorithms. We analyzed almost one billion trades of eight currency pairs (2007-2017) and show that increased algorithmic trading is associated with more complex subsequences and more predictable structures in bid-ask spreads.

In the past, the horizontal transfer of antimicrobial resistance genes was mainly associated with conjugative plasmids or transposons, whereas transduction by bacteriophages was thought to be a rare event. In order to analyze the likelihood of transduction of antimicrobial resistance in the field of clinical veterinary medicine, we isolated phages from from a surgery suite of an equine clinic. Centrioles are microtubule-based organelles that organize the microtubule network and seed the formation of cilia and flagella. New centrioles assemble through a stepwise process dependent notably on the centriolar protein SAS-5 in SAS-5 and its functional homologues in other species form oligomers that bind the centriolar proteins SAS-6 and SAS-4, thereby forming an evolutionarily conserved structural core at the onset of organelle assembly. Transformations of extracellular matrix (ECM) accompany pathological tissue changes, yet how cell-ECM crosstalk drives these processes remains unknown as adequate tools to probe forces or mechanical strains in tissues are lacking. Here, we introduce a new nanoprobe to assess the mechanical strain of fibronectin (Fn) fibers in tissue, based on the bacterial Fn-binding peptide FnBPA5. FnBPA5 exhibits nM binding affinity to relaxed, but not stretched Fn fibers and is shown to exhibit strain-sensitive ECM binding in cell culture in a comparison with an established Fn-FRET probe.

β-glucans are well-known modulators of the immune system in mammals but little is known about β-glucan triggered immunity in planta. Here we show by isothermal titration calorimetry, circular dichroism spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy that the FGB1 gene from the root endophyte Piriformospora indica encodes for a secreted fungal-specific β-glucan-binding lectin with dual function. This lectin has the potential to both alter fungal cell wall composition and properties, and to efficiently suppress β-glucan-triggered immunity in different plant hosts, such as Arabidopsis, barley and Nicotiana benthamiana.
