Introduction And Hypothesis: The objective was to identify modifiable risk factors for obstetric anal sphincter injury (OASI) in primiparous women.

Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of primiparous women with a singleton vaginal delivery. Main outcome measures were incidence of OASI and odds ratios for possible risk factors: maternal age, body mass index and height, fetal birthweight and head circumference, gestational age, epidural analgesia, mediolateral episiotomy, and instrumental deliveries.

Article Synopsis
  • Nail clippings were assessed as a diagnostic method for onychomycosis and found to be effective when compared to the traditional KOH smear technique.
  • A study involving 39 patients showed that nail clippings successfully identified fungal elements in 88% of onychomycosis cases, while KOH smears were positive in 85% of the cases.
  • The researchers concluded that nail clippings provide a quick and cost-effective alternative for diagnosing onychomycosis, along with the added benefit of identifying specific pathogen groups.

This review aims to assess the current and past literature for efficacious non-invasive diagnostic markers for earlier detection of endometriosis. We briefly discussed the associations of endometriosis with other autoimmune diseases (AID), as well as the broad changes that occur within the immune system. Specifically, we focused on the usage of various autoantibodies as a potential non-invasive diagnostic tool.

Article Synopsis
  • Toe web infection (TWI) is a bacterial infection in the skin between the toes, often following a chronic fungal infection, with key symptoms being skin breakdown in that area.
  • A study conducted on 200 patients at Sheba Medical Center revealed that the typical TWI patient was predominantly male, around 51 years old, and had common health issues like diabetes and hypertension, alongside a high smoking rate.
  • The findings indicate that TWI is linked to smoking and diabetes, with half of the patients experiencing bilateral infections and a notable portion suffering from recurrent cases.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the levator-urethra gap (LUG) measurement and its effectiveness in diagnosing levator avulsion in women with a history of obstetric anal sphincter injury.
  • Researchers analyzed ultrasound data from 618 women to identify the optimal LUG cutoff value for avulsion diagnosis, ultimately finding that a cutoff of 2.305 cm provided the best sensitivity and specificity.
  • The findings suggest that while LUG measurement is helpful for diagnosing avulsion, the cutoff should be tailored to the specific patient population, as higher cutoffs may lead to missed diagnoses.

Problem: The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of and the association between endometriosis, fibromyalgia, and autoimmune disease (AID) in a large population database and to describe healthcare resource utilization (HCRU) in affected women.

Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was performed using the computerized databases of Maccabi Healthcare Services (MHS), a 2.1-million-member healthcare plan in Israel.
