Background: Physical activity (PA) has multiple benefits for older adults (≥70 years old). Despite this many older adults do not undertake the World Health Organisation guideline recommended amount of PA. This systematic review examines barriers and motivators to PA in adults aged ≥70 years.

Background: Despite the advantages of physical activity (PA), older adults are often insufficiently active to maximise health. Understanding factors that influence PA engagement will support well-designed interventions for older people. Our aim was to review the qualitative evidence exploring the factors affecting older adults' engagement in PA.

[Figure: see text] The aim of this project was to provide training to nursing staff to improve their confidence and knowledge when caring for children and young people with mental health problems. A one-day bespoke training course was given to a purposeful sample of eight children's nurses. The nurses completed questionnaires before and after the training day and a third questionnaire three months after the course.

The interrelationships between hydrologically driven evolution of legacy landscapes downstream of major mining districts and the contamination of lowland ecosystems are poorly understood over centennial time scales. Here, we demonstrate within piedmont valleys of California's Sierra Nevada, through new and historical data supported by modeling, that anthropogenic fans produced by 19th century gold mining comprise an episodically persistent source of sediment-adsorbed Hg to lowlands. Within the enormous, iconic Yuba Fan, we highlight (i) an apparent shift in the relative processes of fan evolution from gradual vertical channel entrenchment to punctuated lateral erosion of fan terraces, thus enabling entrainment of large volumes of Hg-laden sediment during individual floods, and (ii) systematic intrafan redistribution and downstream progradation of fan sediment into the Central Valley, triggered by terrace erosion during increasingly long, 10-y flood events.

A manager's workout.

Nurs Stand

September 2013

A Management Masterclass course run by the company Mind Gym is helping nurse Jessica Higson to learn new strategies for leading her ward team and to understand financial realities. The big message from the course, she says, is that thinking optimistically gets results.

This article reports on an evaluation of a established pre-assessment clinic for children scheduled for day surgery. The results suggest that the pre-assessment clinic increases the efficiency and effectiveness of the admissions process for children. The authors discuss the results in detail and make recommendations for further research and nursing practice.

Background: Several aspects of children's health and development are known from empirical studies to be associated with otitis media with effusion (OME; 'glue ear'). The 'diffuse image' has been an obstacle to defining a core set of impacts about which inter-profession and parent-professional communication can be effective.

Aims: The study quantifies similarities and differences in how the signs, symptoms, and developmental impact of OME are attributed and construed, between teachers, parents, and ear, nose, and throat (ENT)surgeons.

'Watchful waiting' for glue ear in children within primary care as a precursor or alternative to surgery is one of the increasing pressures on general practitioners (GPs) to limit outpatient referrals. An equipment survey questions whether primary care is properly equipped to 'watch', given the limited access to audiological equipment that might objectively underpin a decision on when 'waiting' should end.

In previous studies, we showed that angiotensin II (Ang II) and its congener peptides-angiotensin-(2-8) [Ang-(2-8)] and angiotensin-(1-7) [Ang-(1-7)]-activate 2 distinct signal transduction pathways in a mixed population of human cortical astrocytoma cells. This suggested that different populations of astrocytes could be heterogeneous with respect to their expression of Ang II receptors or the responses to which these receptors are coupled. To compare the responses which are activated by Ang II and its congener peptides in astrocytes from different brain regions, we measured phospholipase C (PLC) activity and prostaglandin release in isolated astrocytes from 4 different areas of neonatal rat brain.

Objective: To investigate the effects of a history of otitis media (OM) in childhood on the acoustic reflex threshold (ART) in young adults.

Design: Questionnaire responses on childhood ear and hearing problems were obtained from populations of university students. In Study 1, 31 students reporting histories of persistent childhood OM and 34 students with no known OM histories were identified.

We aimed to determine whether reported difficulties in speech understanding are associated with abnormal acoustic reflex thresholds (ARTs). The acoustic reflex has been shown to have a role in the understanding of speech at high intensities by ensuring that the strong low-frequency components of sound do not excessively mask the higher-frequency components, which are important for speech understanding. There is also wide variance in individual ARTs.

The bithermal caloric test has traditionally been carried out using water but air may also be used. One of the reported disadvantages of air is the high test-retest variability (Coats et al., 1976).

Objective: The ways in which summation of energy or of information occurs have long been used to explore sensory mechanisms. In the case of the acoustic reflex, some binaural summation is known to occur, but both data and specification of method have been sketchy. Accurate estimates of mean and standard deviation were therefore sought to compare binaural acoustic reflex summation (BARS) with binaural loudness summation (BLS) to determine whether these have a common basis.

There is evidence that children with recent histories of otitis media (OM) have poorer binaural hearing than children with no such histories. In order to investigate whether these deficits persist into adulthood, young adults were selected for auditory testing on the basis of responses to a questionnaire on childhood OM. Binaural performance measures were obtained for the binaural masking level difference, binaural loudness summation and lateralisation of binaural clicks.

About 5% of those presenting at an ENT clinic with ear or hearing complaints are found to have normal pure-tone thresholds. Many of this group complain specifically of difficulties understanding speech in background noise. We have termed this complaint 'Obscure Auditory Dysfunction' (OAD).

The intent of this study was to determine what influence, if any, increasing age has on the binding of drugs by plasma proteins. Plasma from healthy subjects ranging in age from 21 to 94 years was used. The binding of phenytoin (diphenylhydantoin) (acid), penicillin G potassium (benzylpenicillin potassium), and phenobarbituric acid was determined by equilibrium dialysis of 14C-labeled compounds.
