This study was conducted to monitor the population dynamics of six major insect pests at the NMSU Agricultural Science Center at Farmington (ASC-Farmington) and within an adjacent commercial farm (Navajo Agricultural Products Industry, NAPI) for more effective and efficient pest management during the 2013-2019 period. Specific pheromone traps, sticky and net traps were used to collects moths of beet armyworm (), cabbage looper ( ), corn earworm (), fall armyworm (), potato psyllid (), and western bean cutworm (). These insects generally appear in early June and their population decreases toward the end of August/early September with different peak times and magnitudes during July and August.

Plantar skin on the soles of the feet has a distinct morphology and composition that is thought to enhance its tolerance to mechanical loads, although the individual contributions of morphology and composition have never been quantified. Here, we combine multiscale mechanical testing and computational models of load bearing to quantify the mechanical environment of both plantar and nonplantar skin under load. We find that morphology and composition play distinct and complementary roles in plantar skin's load tolerance.

Objective: This work validates a novel non-invasive method to identify periods of cyclic motor activity in the colon using multichannel skin-surface electrical recordings on the lower abdominal region, termed electrocolonography (EColG).

Methods: EColG recordings were made from 21 human subjects during a 3 hr meal-response study. A signal processing pipeline based on Continuous Wavelet Transform time-frequency analysis was used to quantify the spectral power in the colonic frequency band ( ≈ 2-6 cycles per minute; cpm) during the fasted and fed states.

Background: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a chemical class widely used in industrial and commercial applications because of their unique physical and chemical properties. Between 2013 and 2016 PFAS were detected in public water systems and private wells in El Paso County, Colorado. The contamination was likely due to aqueous film forming foams used at a nearby Air Force base.

We report changes in the genomic landscape in the development of head and neck squamous cell carcinomas HNSCC from potentially premalignant lesions (PPOLS) to malignancy and lymph node metastases. Likely pathological mutations predominantly involved a relatively small set of genes reported previously (TP53, KMT2D, CDKN2A, PIK3CA, NOTCH1 and FAT1) but also other predicted cancer drivers (MGA, PABPC3, NR4A2, NCOR1 and MACF1). Notably, all these mutations arise early and are present in PPOLs.

Minimally invasive technologies that can sample and detect cell-free nucleic acid biomarkers from liquid biopsies have recently emerged as clinically useful for early diagnosis of a broad range of pathologies, including cancer. Although blood has so far been the most commonly interrogated bodily fluid, skin interstitial fluid has been mostly overlooked despite containing the same broad variety of molecular biomarkers originating from cells and surrounding blood capillaries. Emerging technologies to sample this fluid in a pain-free and minimally-invasive manner often take the form of microneedle patches.

Stress-induced premature cellular senescence is a significant factor in the onset of age-dependent disease in the cardiovascular system. Plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), a major TGF-β1/p53 target gene and negative regulator of the plasmin-based pericellular proteolytic cascade, is elevated in arterial plaques, vessel fibrosis, arteriosclerosis, and thrombosis, correlating with increased tissue TGF-β1 levels. Additionally, PAI-1 is necessary and sufficient for the induction of p53-dependent replicative senescence.

Urbanization can dramatically alter stormwater, both the quantity and quality, by engendering larger peak flows and through the introduction of contaminants into runoff. The current study builds on previous research that developed relationships between a suite of nonpoint source contaminants, known as trace organic contaminants (TOrCs), and hydrologic measurements for a series of storms (one site had 15 storms and the other had 19 storms) in Madison, WI, by creating statistical and deterministic models. Correlations and regressions were calculated between TOrC loads and hydrologic measurements for a series of storms for both a commercial site and a high-density residential site.

Liquid chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) shows great potential for expanding our understanding of relevant unknown chemical components present within complex environmental mixtures. This study identified potentially endocrine active components within Minnesota lakewater by prioritizing LC-HRMS features uniquely present at sunfish spawning habitats where male fish showed signs of estrogen agonism. Based on serology, cytopathology, cereal host range and leafhopper vector, maize sterile stunt virus (MSSV) has been regarded as a strain of the cytorhabdovirus barley yellow striate mosaic virus (BYSMV). Here, we report the first-ever sequence of MSSV, comprising the complete genome of 12,561 nucleotides. Detailed analysis of genome organization, coding and non-coding sequences, and phylogeny confirms the close relationship to BYSMV and supports classification of this virus a strain of BYSMV.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of pegbovigrastim (PEG) treatment of peripartum Holstein cows on the microbiome found in the vagina postpartum using sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. A subset of cows was randomly sampled from a larger study where cows had been randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatments: pegbovigrastim (PEG) or untreated control (CTR). The PEG-treated cows received a subcutaneous injection containing 15 mg of pegbovigrastim 7 d before expected calving and a second injection within 24 h of calving.
