Rapid quantification of multi-cryoprotectant toxicity using an automated liquid handling method.

Cryopreservation in a vitrified state has vast potential for long-term storage of tissues and organs that may be damaged by ice formation. However, the toxicity imparted by the high concentration of cryoprotectants (CPAs) required to vitrify these specimens remains a hurdle. To address this challenge, we previously developed a mathematical approach to design less toxic CPA equilibration methods based on the minimization of a toxicity cost function.

An embodied distress: African asylum seekers' experiences of mental health difficulties while awaiting an asylum outcome in Ireland.

The mental health of asylum seekers has attracted significant interest and examination. Quantitative studies have consistently indicated that asylum seekers experience mental distress at a higher rate than both host populations and their refugee counterparts. Qualitative insight into asylum seekers' embodied experience of mental distress is limited.

LGBT + young people's perceptions of barriers to accessing mental health services in Ireland.

Aim: To explore the barriers to accessing mental health services in the Republic of Ireland from the perspectives of young LGBT + people aged 14-25.

Background: Significant mental health disparities exist between LGBT + young people and their cisgender and heterosexual peers, yet they do not have equitable access to mental health services. Limited research has explored barriers, which exist for LGBTI + young people in accessing services, particularly from their perspectives.

'Not Left in Limbo': Service User Experiences of Mental Health Nurse Prescribing in Home Care Settings.

Prescribing in mental health nursing in the Republic of Ireland is still an unusual occurrence and despite an uptake in prescriber training, this does not often translate to practice. Recent Irish research, however, has identified that nurse prescribing when offered, is perceived to enhance care and offer better delivery of services. Since the legislation was introduced in the Republic of Ireland to enable nurses and midwives to prescribe in May 2007, there are now 1,123 nurses registered to prescribe medication.

Health profile of residents of retirement villages in Auckland, New Zealand: findings from a cross-sectional survey with health assessment.

Objectives: Retirement villages (RV) have expanded rapidly, now housing perhaps one in eight people aged 75+ years in New Zealand. Health service initiatives might better support residents and offer cost advantages, but little is known of resident demographics, health status or needs. This study describes village residents-their demographics, socio-behavioural and health status-noting differences between participants who volunteered and those who were sampled.

Educating health and social care practitioners on the experiences and needs of older LGBT+ adults: Findings from a systematic review.

Aim(s): To report review findings into interventions used to educate the health and social care workforce on the experiences and needs of LGBT+ older adults.

Background: Research demonstrates that inequalities in outcomes on health and social well-being for LGBT+ older adults are perpetuated by the cumulative disadvantages from discrimination and social exclusion throughout the life course and a lack of culturally competent workforce.

Methods: A systematic search of peer-reviewed papers published before February 2020 was conducted in electronic databases.

Survival Following Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator Implantation in Patients With Amyloid Cardiomyopathy.

Background Outcomes data in patients with cardiac amyloidosis after implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) implantation are limited. We compared outcomes of patients with ICDs implanted for cardiac amyloidosis versus nonischemic cardiomyopathies (NICMs) and evaluated factors associated with mortality among patients with cardiac amyloidosis. Methods and Results Using National Cardiovascular Data Registry's ICD Registry data between April 1, 2010 and December 31, 2015, we created a 1:5 propensity-matched cohort of patients implanted with ICDs with cardiac amyloidosis and NICM.

Comparison of Mortality and Readmission in Non-Ischemic Versus Ischemic Cardiomyopathy After Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator Implantation.

Data is lacking on the contemporary risk of death and readmission following implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) implantation in patients with non-ischemic cardiomyopathies (NICM) compared with ischemic cardiomyopathies (ICM) in a large nationally representative cohort. We performed a retrospective cohort study using the National Cardiovascular Data Registry ICD Registry linked with Medicare claims from April 1, 2010 to December 31, 2013. We established a cohort of NICM and ICM patients with a left ventricular ejection fraction ≤35% who received a de novo, primary prevention ICD.

Background: Recognising the signs of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can be a challenge for frontline professionals. The use of brief parent-completed questionnaires for recording the signs of ASD in school-aged children may be an important and efficient contributor to professional insight. However, to date, such questionnaires have not been designed to be used in coordination with current standardised Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) diagnostic tools.

Introduction: The effect of early and sustained administration of daily probiotic therapy on patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) remains uncertain.

Methods And Analysis: The Restoration Of gut microflora in Critical Illness Trial (ROCIT) study is a multicentre, randomised, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, two-sided superiority trial that will enrol 220 patients in five ICUs. Adult patients who are within 48 hours of admission to an ICU and are expected to require intensive care beyond the next calendar day will be randomised in a 1:1 ratio to receive early and sustained 299v probiotic therapy in addition to usual care or placebo in addition to usual care.

Paying For Value From Costly Medical Technologies: A Framework For Applying Value-Based Payment Reforms.

Innovative medical products offer significant and potentially transformative impacts on health, but they create concerns about rising spending and whether this rise is translating into higher value. The result is increasing pressure to pay for therapies in a way that is tied to their value to stakeholders through improving outcomes, reducing disease complications, and addressing concerns about affordability. Policy responses include the growing application of health technology assessments based on available evidence to determine unit prices, as well as alternatives to volume-based payment that adjust product payments based on predictors or measures of value.

Beyond the moment: Influence of a co-facilitated education intervention on practitioners' recovery beliefs and practices.

Despite health policy and research increasingly advocating for recovery-enabling principles to be better integrated into mental health services, finding solutions to enhance the translation of recovery policy into practice remains a challenge. This study sought to understand whether a co-facilitated group education intervention for service users and family members reached beyond the intervention and impacted the everyday recovery promoting beliefs and practices of the practitioners involved and the wider organization. The study employed a qualitative design involving semi-structured interviews with a purposively selected sample of 28 participants (mental health nurses and other members of the multidisciplinary team) who were involved in delivering the intervention.

Problem Identification: This systematic review will examine the social support needs of bereaved parents in the specific context of pediatric cancer by synthesizing the qualitative evidence. Social support encompasses emotional, practical, informational, and meaning-making support needs.

Hyperammonemia syndrome due to Ureaplasma urealyticum in a kidney transplant recipient: A case of disseminated disease from a fluoroquinolone-resistant isolate.

Ureaplasma species (spp.) are common colonizers of the urogenital tract but may cause systemic infection in immunocompromised patients. They release significant amounts of ammonia via urea hydrolysis and have been recently implicated in the pathogenesis of hyperammonemia syndrome after organ transplantation.
