Growth hormone (GH) exerts multiple effects on different organs directly or via its main mediator, insulin-like growth factor1 (IGF1). In this study, we focused on the novel relationship between GH action and the antiaging hormone α-klotho. Immunofluorescent staining of α-klotho was observed in the renal distal tubules and pituitary glands of somatostatin- and GH-positive cells in wild-type (WT) mice.

Podocytes serve as part of the renal filtration unit with slit diaphragms. Although the structure of slit diaphragms between two cells is well characterized, how the tricellular contact of podocytes is organized and how it changes in injured podocytes remains unknown. This study focused on a tricellular junction protein, angulin-3, and its localization in healthy podocytes, in developmental stages, and in pathologic conditions, using a newly established monoclonal antibody.

Purpose: To evaluate the parafoveal macular microvasculature and the macular function in patients with retinal vasculitis associated with Behçet's uveitis.

Methods: In 14 patients with inactive Behçet's uveitis and 26 control individuals (13 with nonocular Behçet's syndrome and 13 healthy subjects), we analyzed the retinal nerve fiber layer, ganglion cell layer, full retinal thickness, foveal avascular zone area and sectorial parafoveal vascular density in the superficial vascular plexus, intermediate capillary plexus, and deep capillary plexus using SPECTRALIS optical coherence tomography (OCT) 2 and OCT angiography. Macular sensitivity was analyzed using an MP-3 microperimeter.

Article Synopsis
  • Parkinson's disease (PD) can cause cognitive decline through various mechanisms, and this study explores the role of Alzheimer's disease (AD) related plasma biomarkers in predicting this decline among PD patients.* -
  • The research involved measuring plasma biomarkers in 70 PD patients and 38 healthy controls, analyzing correlations with cognitive tests and evaluating the discriminative ability of these biomarkers.* -
  • Key findings suggest that certain plasma biomarkers, like glial fibrillary acidic protein and neurofilament light chain, are linked to cognitive function, indicating potential astrocytic pathology involved in cognitive decline in PD.*

Epithelial barrier function is commonly analyzed using transepithelial electrical resistance, which measures ion flux across a monolayer, or by adding traceable macromolecules and monitoring their passage across the monolayer. Although these methods measure changes in global barrier function, they lack the sensitivity needed to detect local or transient barrier breaches, and they do not reveal the location of barrier leaks. Therefore, we previously developed a method that we named the zinc-based ultrasensitive microscopic barrier assay (ZnUMBA), which overcomes these limitations, allowing for detection of local tight junction leaks with high spatiotemporal resolution.

Purpose: Microperimetry has been used for several years as a form of visual function testing in patients with retinal diseases. Normal microperimetry values obtained with microperimeter MP-3 have not yet been fully published, and baseline values for topographic macular sensitivity and correlations with age and sex are needed to establish degrees of impairment. This study aimed to determine values for light sensitivity thresholds and fixation stability using the MP-3 in healthy individuals.

TJs maintain the epithelial barrier by regulating paracellular permeability. Since TJs are under dynamically fluctuating intercellular tension, cells must continuously survey and repair any damage. However, the underlying mechanisms allowing cells to sense TJ damage and repair the barrier are not yet fully understood.

The development of bio-based products has increased in recent years, and species of the Bacillus genus have been widely used for product development due to their elevated production of antimicrobial molecules and resistance to extreme environmental conditions through endospore formation. In this context, the antifungal potential of Bacillus velezensis CMRP 4489 was investigated using in silico predictions of secondary metabolites in its genome and in vitro tests against the following phytopathogenic fungi: Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, Macrophomina phaseolina, and Botrytis cinerea. The in-silico predictions indicated that CMRP 4489 possesses several Biosynthetic Gene Clusters (BGCs) capable of producing molecules with antifungal properties and other non-identified BGCs.

Background: Primary antiphospholipid syndrome (PAPS) is characterized by the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL), repetitive fetal loss, and arterial/venous thrombosis and no association with other autoimmune rheumatic disease. Ocular involvement can also occur including retinal vascular thrombosis and neuro-ophthalmological manifestations, such as optic neuropathy and amaurosis fugax. Early detection of ocular changes is crucial to minimize functional loss.
