We compared technetium Tc 99m glucoheptonate renal scan with standard renal arteriography in 22 patients with various renal abnormalities. The diagnostic accuracy and degree of image resolution indicates this study is a useful and safe clinical addition to the diagnostic armamentarium.

The abdominal angiograms of 381 patients were critically reexamined for the existence of collateral circulation in cases of renal artery stenosis or occlusion. Typical renal artery stenosis was found in 39 patients; among these, 17 had a collateral circulation, which was extrarenal in 15 and intrarenal in two. Collateral circulation involving the lumbar arteries was most common.

It is concluded that the absolute values of renal venous renin activity are either unchanged or unpredictably changed after injection of contrast material. The renal venous renin activity ratios seem to be less valid than the absolute values in predicting the significance of renal vascular or parenchymal disease.

Seven cases of neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions involving the urinary bladder and perivesical tissues are presented. Each of the described lesions may have nonspecific angiographic appearances and hence angiography does not permit a specific diagnosis to be made. The primary object of performing angiography is to localize the lesion and identify the vascular supply.

A patient with metastasizing thymoma is presented. This case, as well as 31 previously reported cases in the literature, demonstrate that thymoma may give distant metastases and that the behavior of the tumors cannot be predicted on histologic grounds. The case reported here is the first case where angiography was performed.

A case of massive hemorrhage from pelvic fractures was controlled by embolization of the internal iliac artery with autologous blood clots. Later an infarct of the bladder wall developed, probably because of embolic material in the capillary system preventing adequate collateral supply. It is concluded that collateral flow should be considered before embolization and that the technique of embolization must be adapted to the individual case.

Superselective catheterization and Gelfoam embolization of a muscular branch of the deep femoral artery was successfully performed; a profuse postsurgical bleeding requiring repeated transfusion of blood was stopped. The time of persistence, advantages and disadvantages of commonly used embolic materials are discussed. It is concluded that embolization is an effective method to stop bleeding in selected patients.

The clinical findings were urticarial reaction, edema of the eyelids and lips, and hypotension. Previous sensitization to triphenylmethane dyes, in drugs and other chemicals was likely, but not proven.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA classic case of pheochromocytoma of the urinary bladder is presented. The history of headaches and palpitations during micturition is the result of sudden release of catecholamines into the general circulation. The diagnosis using selective arteriography as well as the medical and surgical management are described.

Eight patients with osteoarthritis of the hip, rest pain and intraosseous hypertension of the proximal femur obtained ameliorated rest pain and reduced intraosseous hypertension 3 months after a fenestration operation in the region of the greater trochanter. They were investigated with intraosseous phlebography of the proximal femur. Six patients showed delayed intraosseous drainage and 7 had altered patterns of drainage before the operation.

One case was a child with retroperitoneal liposarcoma. Proper therapeutic management in these cases was dependent upon a complete angiographic evaluation, including cavography.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFTen male patients with pelvic lipomatosis are herein reported and the clinical and radiological features of the disease are reviewed. The main criteria for the preoperative diagnosis of pelvic lipomatosis include: a) radiolucency of the pelvic soft tissues with a normal to slightly increased vascularity on pelvic arteriography; b) deformity and anterior deviation of the urinary bladder together with various degrees of obstructive uropathy; and c) tubular narrowing of the rectum and upward displacement of the sigmoid colon and small intestine. The associated symptoms are usually variable degrees of dysuria, constipation, and frequently hypertension.

Radiation-induced parenchymal changes were demonstrated in 73 per cent of the patients and pleural effusions in about 10 percent. Total regression of the parenchymal changes were extremely rare, but a slight decrease in the volume of the affected lung was normal.

Histopathological and angiographic findings were correlated in 6 cases of tuberculosis of the urinary bladder. The number of vessels was only slightly increased in the initial and fibrotic stages, whereas hypervascularization was observed in the exudative and productive stages. Otherwise the angiographic changes were nonspecific.
