Recent data show that the gut microbiome plays a role in determining the clinical outcome of infection. We report the case of a patient who developed recurrent acute amebic colitis (second episode of acute colitis) after colonoscopy. Genotyping of revealed that she developed a second episode of acute amebic colitis with the same genotype as that of the first episode, indicating chronic infection had persisted asymptomatically for > 10 months between the first and second episodes.

Article Synopsis
  • There is no agreed-upon best method for obtaining deep tissue biopsies for advanced gastric linitis plastica (LP), but endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) shows promise as a diagnostic tool.
  • A 46-year-old male with suspected advanced gastric LP had inconclusive results from initial biopsies, but EUS-FNA ultimately revealed signet ring cell carcinoma, leading to a chemotherapy referral.
  • The case highlights that EUS-FNA is a potentially effective and less invasive option for diagnosing advanced gastric LP, suggesting it should be considered for deep tissue biopsy collection.

Article Synopsis
  • A 53-year-old man was diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumor of unknown origin and multiple liver metastases after experiencing diarrhea and low potassium levels.
  • Treatment with somatostatin analogues initially reduced tumor size and improved symptoms, but the tumors eventually regrew and symptoms recurred.
  • Following a procedure called transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE), the patient's symptoms disappeared, and although the tumor was not removable, he achieved long-term survival with the help of chemotherapy and TAE.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) results from the progressive accumulation of genetic and epigenetic alterations that lead to the transformation of normal colonic mucosa to adenocarcinoma. Approximately 75% of CRCs are sporadic and occur in people without genetic predisposition or family history of CRC. During the past two decades, sporadic CRCs were classified into three major groups according to frequently altered/mutated genes.

Background: Tumor susceptibility gene 101 (TSG101) was initially identified in fibroblasts as a tumor suppressor gene but subsequent studies show that TSG101 also functions as a tumor-enhancing gene in some epithelial tumor cells. Although previous studies have unraveled diverse biological functions of TSG101, the precise mechanism by which TSG101 is involved in carcinogenesis and tumor progression in a bidirectional and multifaceted manner remains unclear.

Methods: To reveal the mechanism underlying bidirectional modulation of cell invasion by TSG101, we used RNA interference to examine whether TSG101 depletion bidirectionally modulated matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 expression in different cell types.

Positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography with (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) is widely used for the diagnosis of malignant tumors. However, we occasionally encounter cases in which pathological accumulation is indistinguishable from physiological accumulation. We conducted a retrospective study of the maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) and the distribution pattern of FDG accumulation in 80 evaluable patients with records of accumulation in the small intestine identified from data acquired at Dokkyo Medical University PET Center from March 2005 to December 2010.
