Article Synopsis
  • Previous studies found that gemcitabine (GEM) chemotherapy increases GFPT2 expression in pancreatic cancer cells, linking it to metastasis.
  • * GFPT2 influences the hexosamine biosynthesis pathway (HBP), which plays a role in enhancing the metastatic potential of these cancer cells.
  • * The study confirmed that increased GFPT2 expression from GEM exposure is associated with greater cancer cell migration, invasion, and a higher risk of liver metastasis post-chemotherapy, highlighting potential therapeutic targets for preventing metastasis.

Background: Splenectomy is indicated in cases of autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA), which are refractory to medical management. In post-splenectomy, there exists a theoretical risk of AIHA recurrence, especially if an accessory spleen undergoes compensatory hypertrophy. In this context, we present a unique case of recurrent AIHA managed through laparoscopic excision of the accessory spleen (LEAS).

Article Synopsis
  • The study discusses the high rate of residual liver recurrence after surgical removal of colorectal liver metastases, noting that most recurrences happen within 5 years.
  • It presents two specific cases: a woman and a man, both of whom experienced late recurrence in their liver after initially being cancer-free for extended periods—9 years and 15 years, respectively.
  • The findings underscore that while recurrence after a long time is uncommon, it can occur, highlighting the need for ongoing surveillance even after long-term survival post-surgery.

We report a case of an elderly patient, 82 years-old, with initially-unresectable pancreatic head cancer, who successfully underwent complete resection of the primary lesion after systemic chemotherapy for 6 months. The patient had a history of pancreatic body-tail resection for intraductal papillary mucinous carcinoma in 2005. In 2020, a routine examination revealed an increased CA19-9 value of 1,958 U/mL and showed a pancreatic head tumor of 35 mm on CT images.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers studied proteins GATA6, CK5, vimentin, and mucins to see how they can help predict the outcomes and effectiveness of chemotherapy for patients with pancreatic cancer.
  • They looked at samples from patients who had surgery after chemotherapy and compared them with samples taken before treatment.
  • They found different types of pancreatic cancers based on GATA6 and CK5 levels, which helped identify which patients might have better or worse chances of surviving after treatment.

Aim: This study aimed to clarify the usefulness of tumor markers from peritoneal lavage in selecting patients with a high risk of recurrence and predicting site-specific recurrence in patients with pancreatic cancer.

Methods: The levels of serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and carbohydrate antigen (CA) 19-9 (sCEA/sCA 19-9) and paired peritoneal lavage CEA and CA 19-9 (pCEA/pCA 19-9) were measured in 90 patients with pancreatic cancer who underwent surgery. Using the cutoff values determined by maximally selected rank statistics for disease-free survival (DFS), the risk of recurrence and its patterns were evaluated in combination with different markers and different test specimens.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the role of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) and its receptors (CRHR1 and CRHR2) in pancreatic cancer and their impact on patient survival, marking the first analysis of these factors in pancreatic carcinoma tissues.
  • Data from 96 pancreatic cancer patients who underwent complete resection were analyzed, revealing that increased expression of CRHR1 is linked to poorer prognosis, particularly for those receiving adjuvant therapy.
  • Although CRHR1 presence correlated with survival in univariate analysis, it did not maintain this significance in multivariate analysis, indicating the complexity of survival factors in pancreatic cancer.
