Many tetrapod vertebrates have two distinct olfactory organs, the olfactory epithelium (OE) and vomeronasal organ (VNO). In turtles, the olfactory organ consists of two types of sensory epithelia, the upper chamber epithelium (UCE; corresponding to the OE) and the lower chamber epithelium (LCE; corresponding to the VNO). In many turtle species, the UCE contains ciliated olfactory receptor cells (ORCs) and the LCE contains microvillous ORCs.

In patients with burns, bone exposure accompanies serious problems which occasionally lead to amputation. We present a case of an 82-year-old woman who sustained 22% of total body surface area flame burns on her bilateral lower extremities with bone exposure. Despite fascial excision and mesh skin graft, muscles, bones, and tendons were widely exposed on her right leg.

This study investigated triple negative diagnoses that occurred in 27 (11%) out of 243 cases of breast cancer analyzed for the presence of estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor( PgR), and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER 2). In 5 of the triple negative cases of breast cancer, the patients were young, under 35 years of age (average age of 29). In 22 of the cases, the women were 35 years or older (average age of 66).

In the treatment of metastatic breast cancer, trastuzumab, a recombinant monoclonal antibody against human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), is effective when tumor cells overexpress HER2 protein. Although some cases of extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD) also express HER2 protein, no case of EMPD has been reported to be treated with trastuzumab. A 75-year-old man who suffered from EMPD of the scrotum and inguinal region underwent a local excision and lymph node dissection.

Purpose: Although the outcome of surgery for locally advanced pancreatic cancer remains poor, it is improving, with 5-year survival up to about 10% in Japan. The preliminary results of our multi-institutional randomized controlled trial revealed better survival after surgery than after radiochemotherapy. Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) nanorods (80-150 nm in diameter) and nanospheres were synthesized through a self-assembly method using ferric chloride (FeCl(3)) and ammonium persulfate (APS) as oxidants, respectively, and camphorsulfonic acid (CSA) as the dopant. The PEDOT nanorods showed broader absorption bands, higher crystallinity and much higher room-temperature conductivity (approximately 300 S cm(-1)) than the PEDOT nanospheres. Such obviously distinct properties of these products were considered to be due to the much lower rate of polymerization with FeCl(3) than APS, which made the growth of PEDOT according to the suggested cylinder micelles more moderate and regular; as a result, the morphology of the microstructure changed and the crystallinity, the doping level, the molecular orderliness and the conductivity of PEDOT synthesized under lower rate of polymerization improved intensely at the same time.
