Kikai submarine caldera to the south of the Kyushu Island, SW Japan, collapsed at 7.3 ka during the latest supereruption (>500 km of magma) in the Japanese Archipelago. Multi functional research surveys of the T/S Fukae Maru in this caldera, including multi-beam echosounder mapping, remotely operated vehicle observation, multi-channel seismic reflection survey, and rock sampling by dredging and diving, provided lines of evidence for creation of a giant rhyolite lava dome (~32 km) after the caldera collapse.

 Aquatic bacteria were isolated from the hands of working staffs by an adapted culture protocol. When the sample solution obtained by the" glove juice method" was incubated for 3 days at room temperature, viable cell counts increased up to 10-fold, and the majority of the isolated colonies were shown to be Gram-negative aquatic bacteria, which carry the risk of contaminating water. Using R2A medium, coagulase-negative staphylococci were the dominant microbes immediately after recovery from the hands.

When a chiral liquid crystal is given a transport current, a unidirectional molecular motion is known to take place, which is called the Lehmann effect. In this paper, we study the mysterious heat-current-driven Lehmann effect using two types of hemispherical cholesteric droplets using polarizing, reflecting, confocal and fluorescent microscopies. Both the droplets, coexisting with the isotropic phase and contacting on a glass substrate, are characterized by the concavo-convex modulated surface and the inside orientational helix.

A chemiluminescence system, Milliflex Quantum (MFQ), to detect microcolonies, has been used in the pharmaceutical field. In this study, we investigated aquatic bacteria in hemodialysis solutions sampled from bioburden areas in 4 dialysis faculties. Using MFQ, microcolonies could be detected after a short incubation period.

Paraneoplastic pemphigus (PNP) is an autoimmune mucocutaneous disease, associated with neoplasia, which has characteristic clinical, histological and immunological features. While respiratory epithelial involvement has been described in several cases, lesions in the colon epithelium have never been reported. We describe a 57-year-old Japanese woman with PNP who had many aphthae-like erosions on the colon epithelium, in addition to typical mucocutaneous PNP lesions.
