Acral melanoma, which is not ultraviolet (UV)-associated, is the most common type of melanoma in several low- and middle-income countries including Mexico. Latin American samples are significantly underrepresented in global cancer genomics studies, which directly affects patients in these regions as it is known that cancer risk and incidence may be influenced by ancestry and environmental exposures. To address this, here we characterise the genome and transcriptome of 128 acral melanoma tumours from 96 Mexican patients, a population notable because of its genetic admixture.

Background: Metformin, a widely prescribed antidiabetic drug, has shown several promising effects for cancer treatment. These effects have been shown to be mediated by dual modulation of the AMPK-mTORC1 axis, where AMPK acts upstream of mTORC1 to decrease its activity. Nevertheless, alternative pathways have been recently discovered suggesting that metformin can act through of different targets regulation.

At the molecular level, triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is frequently categorized as PAM50 basal-like subtype, but despite the advances in molecular analyses, the clinical outcome for these subtypes is uncertain. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are master regulators of genes involved in hallmarks of cancer, which makes them suitable biomarkers for breast cancer (BRCA) diagnosis and prognosis. Here, we evaluated the regulatory role of lncRNA SOX9-AS1 in these subtypes.

Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed malignancy and the leading cause of cancer-related death in women worldwide. Breast cancer development and progression are mainly associated with tumor-intrinsic alterations in diverse genes and signaling pathways and with tumor-extrinsic dysregulations linked to the tumor immune microenvironment. Significantly, abnormal expression of lncRNAs affects the tumor immune microenvironment characteristics and modulates the behavior of different cancer types, including breast cancer.

Breast cancer (BRCA) represents the most frequent diagnosed malignancy in women worldwide. Despite treatment advances, BRCAs eventually develop resistance to targeted therapies, resulting in poor prognosis. The identification of new biomarkers, like immune-related long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), could contribute to the clinical management of BRCA patients.

Background: M1 macrophages involved in pro-inflammatory processes can be induced by low-density lipoproteins (LDL), giving rise to foam cells. In the atheroma plaque, it has been identified that males present more advanced lesions associated with infiltration. Therefore, our study aims to investigate sex-related changes in the transcriptome of M1 macrophages during the internalization process of LDL particles.

In the past decade, genomics has fundamentally changed our view of cancer biology, allowing comprehensive analyses of mutations, copy number alterations, structural variants, gene expression and DNA methylation profiles in large-scale studies across different cancer types. Efforts like The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and the International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC) have fostered international collaborations for cancer genomic analyses and have generated public databases that give scientists around the world access to thoroughly curated data, which have been extensively used as a tool for further hypothesis driven research on several aspects of cancer biology. In parallel, some of these findings are being translated into specific clinical benefits for cancer patients.

NK cells have unique attributes to react towards cells undergoing malignant transformation or viral infection. This reactivity is regulated by activating or inhibitory germline encoded receptors. An impaired NK cell function may result from an aberrant expression of such receptors, a condition often seen in patients with hematological cancers.

Organotypic three-dimensional (3D) cell cultures more accurately mimic the characteristics of solid tumors in vivo in comparison with traditional two-dimensional (2D) monolayer cell models. Currently, studies on the regulation of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have not been explored in breast cancer cells cultured in 3D microenvironments. In the present research, we studied the expression and potential roles of lncRNAs in estrogen receptor-positive luminal B subtype BT-474 breast cancer cells grown over extracellular matrix proteins-enriched 3D cultures.

The 3D organotypic cultures, which depend on the growth of cells over the extracellular matrix (ECM) used as a scaffold, can better mimic several characteristics of solid cancers that influence tumor biology and the response to drug therapies. Most of our current knowledge on cancer is derived from studies in 2D cultures, which lack the ECM-mediated microenvironment. Moreover, the role of miRNAs that is critical for fine-tuning of gene expression is poorly understood in 3D cultures.

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a malignancy with high heterogeneity in its biological features and treatments. Although the overall survival (OS) of patients with ALL has recently improved considerably, owing to the application of conventional chemo-therapeutic agents, approximately 20% of the pediatric cases and 40-50% of the adult patients relapse during and after the treatment period. The potential mechanisms that cause relapse involve clonal evolution, innate and acquired chemoresistance, and the ability of ALL cells to escape the immune-suppressive tumor response.
