Upstream range shifts of freshwater fishes have been documented in recent years due to ongoing climate change. River fragmentation by dams, presenting physical barriers, can limit the climatically induced spatial redistribution of fishes. Andean freshwater ecosystems in the Neotropical region are expected to be highly affected by these future disturbances.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) among male couples is increasingly recognized as a public health concern. Research on IPV in opposite sex couples indicates frequent underreporting of IPV and high levels of discordance in reporting among dyads. Concordance studies inform refinement methods to measure the experience of IPV among dyads; however the lack of dyadic studies of male couples impedes our understanding of the extent to which IPV is differentially reported in male-male dyads.

Elevated plasma concentrations of the ketone body β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), an endogenous agonist of the hydroxycarboxylic acid receptor 2 (HCA2), is associated with an increased incidence of inflammatory diseases during lactation in dairy cows. In the early stages of this pathology, an increase in neutrophil recruitment is observed; however, the role of BHB remains elusive. This study characterized the effect of BHB and synthetic agonists of the HCA2 receptor on bovine neutrophil chemotaxis and the signaling pathways involved in this process.

Background: To improve the quality of test translation and adaptation, and hence the comparability of scores across cultures, the International Test Commission (ITC) proposed a number of guidelines for the adaptation process. Although these guidelines are well-known, they are not implemented as often as they should be. One possible reason for this is the broad scope of the guidelines, which makes them difficult to apply in practice.

Neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation eliminates/prevents the spread of infectious agents. Platelet activating factor (PAF) is involved in infectious diseases of cattle because it recruits and activates neutrophils. However, its ability to induce NET release and the role of metabolism in this process is not known.

Non-esterified fatty acids (NEFAs) such as oleic acid (OA) and linoleic acid (LA) are associated with a higher incidence of infectious diseases such as metritis and mastitis during the bovine peripartum. Fatty acids can induce an increase in the release of ATP, and changes in the expression levels of purinergic receptors in bovine polymorphonuclears (PMN) during peripartum have also been reported. PMN respond to inflammatory processes with production of ROS, release of proteolytic and bactericidal proteins, and formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs).

is a commensal bacterium with specific strains involved in opportunistic and nosocomial infections. Therefore, it is important to know how the strains of this species are selected in the gut. In this study, fifteen strains, isolated over twelve weeks from the faeces of mice fed standard chow or one of three high fat diets enriched with extra virgin olive oil, refined olive oil or butter were subjected to a genetic "Multilocus Sequence Typing" study that revealed the presence of mainly two genotypes, ST9 and ST40, the latter one prevailing at the end of the research.

Dairy cows undergo metabolic disturbances in the peripartum period, during which infectious inflammatory diseases and detrimental polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) functions, such as radical oxygen species (ROS) production, are observed. Platelet-activating factor (PAF) is a key pro-inflammatory mediator that increases PMN ROS production. To date, the role of glycolysis and mitochondria in PAF-induced ROS production in bovine PMN has not been known.

Metastasis development is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) and yet, few preclinical systems to recapitulate its full spreading process are available. Thus, modeling of tumor progression to metastasis is urgently needed. In this work, we describe the generation of highly metastatic PDAC patient-derived xenograft (PDX) mouse models and subsequent single-cell RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) of circulating tumor cells (CTC), isolated by human HLA sorting, to identify altered signaling and metabolic pathways, as well as potential therapeutic targets.

In the present study, we investigated the possibilities and drawbacks of hollow fiber liquid phase microextraction (HF-LPME) combined with total reflection X-ray fluorescence (TXRF) spectrometry for the determination of low amounts of inorganic arsenic (As) species in water samples. The obtained results showed that a three-phase HF-LPME system was more suitable to be used in combination with TXRF than the two phase configuration, since lower detection limit and better precision for As determination can be attained. Relevant experimental parameters affecting As extraction (i.

Keratinocytes and neutrophils are the main cellular components in wound healing during re-epithelization and inflammation. Free fatty acids such as linoleic acid (LA) present beneficial properties for wound healing by modulating the inflammatory response. LA is a natural ligand of free fatty acids receptor 1 (FFA1), a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR), able to modulate inflammatory process; however, the role of FFA1 in keratinocytes and wound healing remains poorly understood.
