Penile prosthesis (PP) implantation is feasible as an outpatient surgery. The present study describes the surgical process and establishes a consensus for improving the care circuit for outpatient PP implantation in Spain. A working group composed of a scientific committee with extensive experience in PP implantation and representatives of important scientific societies reached a consensus about the recommendations for outpatient PP implantation.

Background: The complex aetiology of type 1 diabetes (T1D), characterised by a detrimental cross-talk between the immune system and insulin-producing beta cells, has hindered the development of effective disease-modifying therapies. The discovery that the pharmacological activation of LRH-1/NR5A2 can reverse hyperglycaemia in mouse models of T1D by attenuating the autoimmune attack coupled to beta cell survival/regeneration prompted us to investigate whether immune tolerisation could be translated to individuals with T1D by LRH-1/NR5A2 activation and improve islet survival.

Methods: Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were isolated from individuals with and without T1D and derived into various immune cells, including macrophages and dendritic cells.

Background: Loneliness, a major public health concern, could be alleviated through social interventions with nature contact as a primary component. "Friends in Nature" is a complex nature-based social intervention designed to be implemented as part of "Reimagining Environments for Connection and Engagement: Testing Actions for Social Prescribing in Natural Spaces" (RECETAS). This project aims to alleviate loneliness and promote health-related quality of life in six different geographic areas worldwide.

The XVI-th Banff Meeting for Allograft Pathology was held in Banff, Alberta, Canada, from 19th-23rd September 2022, as a joint meeting with the Canadian Society of Transplantation. To mark the 30 anniversary of the first Banff Classification, pre-meeting discussions were held on the past, present, and future of the Banff Classification. This report is a summary of the meeting highlights that were most important in terms of their effect on the Classification, including discussions around microvascular inflammation and biopsy-based transcript analysis for diagnosis.

LIN28, a highly conserved RNA-binding protein that acts as a posttranscriptional modulator, plays a vital role in the regulation of T-cell development, reprogramming, and immune activity in infectious diseases and T-cell-based immunotherapies. LIN28 inhibit the expression of miRNAs, the most prevalent family of miRNAs in lymphocytes. Recently it has been suggested that enhances murine anti-tumor immune responses.

Oncolytic viruses often face challenges in achieving optimal antitumor immunity as standalone therapies. The penton base RGD-integrin interactions play a significant role in wild-type adenovirus-induced innate immune responses. To modify these responses, we present ISC301, a novel oncolytic adenovirus engineered by deleting the natural RGD motifs in the penton base while incorporating artificial RGD motifs in the fiber knobs.

Background: HLA-DQ mismatch has been identified as a predictor of de novo donor-specific HLA antibody formation and antibody-mediated rejection. There are insufficient data to guide the incorporation of DQ mismatch into organ allocation decisions.

Methods: We used a retrospective longitudinal cohort of adult living donor kidney transplant recipients from 11 centers across the United States for whom high-resolution class II typing was available.

In kidney transplantation, ongoing alloimmune processes-commonly triggered by HLA incompatibilities-can trigger chronic transplant rejection, affecting the microcirculation and the tubulointerstitium. Continuous inflammation may lead to progressive, irreversible graft injury, culminating in graft dysfunction and accelerated transplant failure. Numerous experimental and translational studies have delineated a complex interplay of different immune mechanisms driving rejection, with antibody-mediated rejection (AMR) being an extensively studied rejection variant.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the role of natural killer (NK) cells in microvascular inflammation during antibody-mediated rejection (ABMR) in kidney transplants by analyzing biopsies from 86 recipients with positive donor-specific antibody (DSA) results.
  • Researchers used immunohistochemistry to visualize NK cells in glomeruli and peritubular capillaries, finding that their numbers were significantly higher in cases of ABMR compared to those without rejection.
  • The presence of NK cells correlated strongly with microvascular inflammation scores and molecular classifiers of ABMR activity, indicating NK cells' potential impact on graft function and patient survival.

Introduction: Adequate treatment of acute postoperative pain is one of the quality requirements in ambulatory surgery and its suboptimal management is associated with delayed discharge, unplanned admissions and late admissions after home discharge. The aim of the present study was to learn about the organizational strategy for the management of postoperative pain in ambulatory surgery units (ASU) in Spain.

Methods: A cross-sectional, multicenter study was carried out based on an electronic survey on aspects related to the management of acute postoperative pain in different ASUs in our country.

Adoptive T cellular immunotherapies have emerged as relevant approaches for treating cancer patients who have relapsed or become refractory (R/R) to traditional cancer treatments. Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy has improved survival in various hematological malignancies. However, significant limitations still impede the widespread adoption of these therapies in most cancers.

Scientific research of artificial intelligence (AI) in dermatology has increased exponentially. The objective of this study was to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the performance of AI algorithms for skin cancer classification in comparison to clinicians with different levels of expertise. Based on PRISMA guidelines, 3 electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library) were screened for relevant articles up to August 2022.

Purpose: This study compared Doctor of Physical Therapy students' perceived confidence with evaluating/treating complex patients before and after a case-based patient management course. The impact of simulated learning and prior clinical exposure were explored.

Methods: A longitudinal, pretest-posttest design was used across 4 university campuses.

Background: In solid organ transplantation, HLA matching between donor and recipient is associated with superior outcomes. In islet transplantation, an intervention for Type 1 diabetes, HLA matching between donor and recipient is not performed as part of allocation. Susceptibility to Type 1 diabetes is associated with the presence of certain HLA types.

Boursin is a versatile semisoft cheese that can be made with different types of milk. While widely distributed in the European and North American markets, Boursin is produced to a limited extent in Brazil despite its commercial potential. This scenario encourages consumer-oriented product development studies by facilitating data collection with less bias and fewer product preconceptions, thus favoring the investigation of technological aspects of commercial interest.

The incidence of melanoma has been dramatically increasing over the last decades. Melanoma is considered to have a high metastatic potential and it can progress via lymphatic vessels or through hematogenous metastasis. Different patterns of recurrence have been described, namely, local, satellite, and in transit metastasis (LCIT), lymphatic metastasis, and systemic metastasis.

Background: Skin cancer is the most frequent cancer worldwide and the most frequent periocular tumor. Keratinocyte Carcinomas (KC) located in periorificial areas, such as periocular tumors, are considered high-risk tumors. Mohs Micrographic Surgery (MMS) is considered the first line for the treatment of high-risk KC, providing a lower recurrence rate than conventional wide excision.

Unlabelled: With the great demand in the market for new dental software, the need has been seen to carry out a precision study for applications in digital dentistry, for which there is no comparative study, and there is a general ignorance regarding their applications. The purpose of this study was to investigate the accuracy differences between digital impressions obtained using generic G-CAD (general CAD) and D-CAD (CAD dental) software. Today, there is a difference between the design software used in dentistry and these in common use.
