Background: Compassionate, inclusive, and equitable nursing care begins with integrating concepts of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and social determinants of health (SDOH) into curricula.

Problem: Little is known about RN to BSN students' perception of applying these concepts in practice. The purpose of this pilot project was to assess RN to BSN students' perceptions of DEI-SDOH curricular threads in their nursing practice.

A Visionary Think Tank to Address the Nursing Workforce Crisis.

The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated an existing problem plaguing hospital systems across the United States: a nursing workforce shortage. This article describes how one institution applied the American Organization for Nursing Leadership Nurse Executive Competencies to convene an immersive think tank to reimagine the nursing workforce.

Shielding Effect of Nanomicelles: Stable and Catalytically Active Oxidizable Pd(0) Nanoparticle Catalyst Compatible for Cross-Couplings of Water-Sensitive Acid Chlorides in Water.

Under the shielding effect of nanomicelles, a sustainable micellar technology for the design and convenient synthesis of ligand-free oxidizable ultrasmall Pd(0) nanoparticles (NPs) and their subsequent catalytic exploration for couplings of water-sensitive acid chlorides in water is reported. A proline-derived amphiphile, PS-750-M, plays a crucial role in stabilizing these NPs, preventing their aggregation and oxidation state changes. These NPs were characterized using C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), infrared (IR), and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy to evaluate the carbonyl interactions of PS-750-M with Pd.

Growth hormone as a rescue treatment in maple syrup urine disease with lessons from pediatric burn literature, case report and brief literature review.

Maple Syrup Urine Disease (MSUD) is a rare inherited disorder of branched chain amino acid metabolism characterized by cerebral edema and death in uncorrected metabolic crisis. It is conventionally treated with intensive nutritional therapy to prevent and correct metabolic crisis. This paper reports the use of growth hormone as a pharmacologic rescue agent in the case of an 11-year-old male with MSUD and metabolic crisis refractory to standard interventions.

The utility of guaiac stool testing in the detection of gastrointestinal complications in infants with critical congenital heart disease.

Background: Guaiac stool testing has been routinely used as a method to detect gastrointestinal complications in infants with critical congenital heart disease (CHD); however, the sensitivity and specificity have not been established.

Methods: A retrospective chart review was performed investigating the presence of heme-positive stools and subsequent gastrointestinal complications as well as time to goal caloric intake and radiograph exposure.

Results: The presence of heme-positive stools was not a statistically significant factor in patients with critical CHD that experienced gastrointestinal complications.

Rethinking priorities: experience of an educational initiative to change attitudes, behaviours and clinical practice in end-of-life care.

To implement the National End of Life Care strategy and enable more people to express and achieve their preferences about care at the end of life, senior clinicians outside palliative medicine need to make it a routine part of their practice. However, it is acknowledged that recognising that people are entering the last phase of their illness is not always straightforward, and having conversations about aims of treatment and planning for future care may not be easy. In order to begin to address these challenges, funding was sought from the Yorkshire and the Humber Strategic Health Authority (SHA), and subsequently Health Education England, Yorkshire and the Humber (HEEYH), to pilot a development programme in 2 acute trusts.

A practical and highly effective one-pot synthesis of versatile heteroaryl ketones directly from carboxylic acids and heteroaryl halides under mild conditions is reported. This method does not require derivatization of carboxylic acids (preparation of acid chlorides, Weinreb amides, etc.) or the use of any additives/catalysts.

Enacting a Vision for a Master's Entry Clinical Nurse Leader Program: Rethinking Nursing Education.

The need to educate nurses at the graduate level and provide them with a different skill set that broadens their view of health and nursing is clearly articulated by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. Consequently, the role of the clinical nurse leader (CNL) was born. Responding to the need for providing a highly educated and credentialed professional at the bedside, Rush University College of Nursing made the bold move to phase out baccalaureate education and enact a prelicensure, master's entry CNL program.

Using a public health approach to improve end-of-life care: results and discussion of a health needs assessment undertaken in a large city in northern England.

A detailed health needs assessment (HNA) for end-of-life care (EoLC) services was led by public health in Leeds to inform a commissioning strategy. To answer the question: are we delivering the best possible EoLC services within the resources available? Mixed methods were used with three approaches: epidemiological, corporate and comparative. More people from deprived communities die in hospital.

Long-term outcomes of a postbaccalaureate nurse residency program: a pilot study.

Objective: The purpose of this pilot study was to determine what influence a nurse residency program (NRP) has on long-term outcomes including turnover rates, career satisfaction, and leadership development.

Background: Studies examining short-term outcomes of NRPs have shown positive effects. Long-term studies of NRPs have not been reported.

Mercury export to the Arctic Ocean from the Mackenzie River, Canada.

Circumpolar rivers, including the Mackenzie River in Canada, are sources of the contaminant mercury (Hg) to the Arctic Ocean, but few Hg export studies exist for these rivers. During the 2007-2010 freshet and open water seasons, we collected river water upstream and downstream of the Mackenzie River delta to quantify total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations and export. Upstream of the delta, flow-weighted mean concentrations of bulk THg and MeHg were 14.

N-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)-N-[(triethylenediammonium)sulfonyl]azanide: a convenient sulfamoylation reagent for alcohols.

A convenient and efficient procedure is described for the sulfamoylation of alcohols using N-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)-N-[(triethylenediammonium)sulfonyl]azanide (1). The ambient temperature stable reagent 1 reacts with phenols as well as primary and secondary alcohols to give high to modest yields. The relative reaction rate of substrates was determined (primary > phenol > secondary ≫ tertiary).

A 'pain-free' death.

Background: The time around a patient's death is often filled with sadness, but good medical and nursing care can provide comfort to patients and their carers at this critical time. For many, a 'pain-free' death is a priority although there are other aspects to providing good care at the end of life. Honest, open discussion with patients and carers about their wishes is an essential prerequisite to individualized care.

A decision algorithm for admitting students to advanced practice programs in nursing.

The academic records of 738 master's-level nursing students were reviewed to develop an optimal compound decision rule for selecting candidates who would be successful in advanced practice programs. Chi-square analysis was used to establish the association between various combinations of independent variables and dismissal status. Independent variables included cumulative grade point average (CUMGPA), undergraduate nursing grade point average (NSGGPA), and Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores (quantitative and verbal).

Influence of group cohesion on maternal well-being among participants in a support/education group program for single mothers.

Single mothers are at increased risk of psychosocial disadvantage, social isolation and physical and mental health difficulties. The authors present (1) the results of group cohesion assessments completed by mothers participating in a trial of community-based support/education groups, and (2) assessments of the association between group cohesion ratings and intervention outcomes of maternal self-evaluations of well-being (mood, self-esteem, and social support) and parenting. Mothers participating in groups completed the Group Atmosphere Scale, a measure of group cohesion, post-group.

Working with standardized patients: a primer.

This paper presents concepts and strategies for using standardized patients (SP) in teaching and evaluation of nursing students. SP encounters are an alternative to clinical experiences and a standardized criterion for student performance evaluation. Careful development of encounters, selection and training of SPs, support and debriefing of all participants are essential to a positive SP encounter.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in palliative medicine: a survey.

All doctors are required to undertake Continuing Professional development (CPD)--for good practice and for the purposes of annual appraisal and re-validation. The medical workforce in palliative medicine is diverse. Many doctors work on a part time basis, with the same CPD requirements as those working fulltime.
