Haemophilus influenzae is a saprophyte that colonizes the nasopharynx in nearly two thirds of children and adults. Neisseria meningitidis is a strict human bacterium which lives in the nasopharynx. It can cause benign nasopharyngitis or asymptomatic colonization.
