Market reactions to the arrival and containment of COVID-19: An event study.

We study the short-term market reactions of US and European stocks during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Employing an event study, we document that stocks react significantly negatively to the announcement of the first death in a given country. While our results suggest that the announcements of country-specific fiscal policy measures negatively affect stock returns, monetary policy measures have the potential to calm markets.

Call centre workplaces are in many ways a challenge to occupational health and safety. The occupation itself can be described as an IT information technology-supported, communication-intensive form of work with often unusual working hours and a high rate of part-time employment. Data on the employee turnover as well as absenteeism related to occupational disability is quite contradictory.

ADP-ribosylation: role in LPS-induced phosphorylation of two cytosolic proteins (p36/38) in monocytes.

Human monocytes respond to LPS by releasing proinflammatory cytokines such as TNF-alpha, IL-1 and IL-6. Here we show that inhibitors of ADP-ribosylation namely nicotinamide and meta-iodobenzylguanidine prevent production of TNF-alpha and IL-6 at the protein and mRNA level. The inhibitors also influence the LPS-induced phosphorylation pattern of cytosolic proteins.

A human autoantibody recognizing nuclear matrix-associated nuclear protein localized in dot structures.

A human autoimmune serum is used to characterize a protein which is located within a dot-like structure of the interphase nucleus. The dots are located in the nucleoplasma outside the nucleoli. The dot-like structure could be observed on a variety of human substrates (HEp-2, HepG2, HeLa, Molt-4, WI-38 cell lines, peripheral blood lymphocytes), mouse cell lines and tissues (3T3, L929, spleen sections), rat sections, marsupial PtK2 cells and hamster cell lines.

[Effectiveness of acupuncture and attitude-relaxation training in the treatment of primary sleep disorders].

Unlabelled: The present study focuses on the differential efficiency of specific psychological and medical procedures for the treatment of chronic sleep disorders (primary symptoms). 32 selected subjects with chronic sleep disorders were assigned to one of the following groups according to their own choice: cognitive change and relaxation training (n = 12), needle acupuncture (n = 8), laser acupuncture (n = 12), and a waiting control group (n = 12). Before, during, and after the respective therapy each subject kept a record with 13 items about his/her sleeping behaviour which had to be filled out every morning.

Propranolol in schizophrenia. Clinical, metabolic, and pharmacological findings.

Six schizophrenic patients received propranolol hydrochloride to evaluate pharmacological, endocrinological, and antipsychotic properties of the drug. They had previously been unsuccessfully treated with phenothiazines. After a drug-free period of two weeks, propranolol was administered in gradually increasing doses.

Using a newly characterized anti-melatonin serum it has been possible to establish human serum melatonin concentrations at short time intervals during 24h. Human serum melatonin changes during the menstrual cycle.

Serum melatonin concentration in early morning during the menstrual cycle, studied in five healthy women, showed that melatonin was elevated at the time of menstrual bleeding and had its nadir at the time of the menstrual cycling in humans.
