Introduction: Opiate drugs are commonly prescribed for postoperative pain relief following craniotomy. The aim of this study was to assess opiate use in patients undergoing craniotomy for high-grade glioma and to identify risk factors contributing to prolonged opiate use.
Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted on adult patients undergoing craniotomy for high-grade glioma between January 2016 and January 2020.
Background And Objectives: Compared with the modified Frailty Index-11 (mFI-11) frailty tool, reflective of patient comorbidities, the Fried phenotype weighs functional patient variables. This study examined using the Fried phenotype in predicting postoperative outcomes in craniotomy for patients with tumor.
Methods: This retrospective cohort analysis included patients with Current Procedural Terminology codes for supratentorial/infratentorial tumor resections and preoperative frailty scores.
Laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) is being performed more frequently for various lesions within neurosurgery, including epileptic foci, vascular malformations, and tumors. Though this technique generally has an excellent safety profile, it is important to be aware of potential complications. Thermal ablation of tissue leads to disruption of the blood brain barrier as well as an inflammatory response both of which cause the majority of complications from LITT.

Introduction: Professional society awards can substantially impact career trajectory of awardees in neurosurgery. Past studies have discussed the demographics of neurosurgery conference awardees in terms of gender and professional experience; however, a full assessment of awardee qualities and characteristics has yet to be studied.
Objective: The goal of this study is to provide a comprehensive evaluation of neurosurgical society winners that focuses on gender, race, academic degrees, and institutional/geographic affiliation.
Background: Pediatric spinal fusion surgery is a complex procedure that poses challenges in perioperative management. The enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) approach is an evidence-based, multidisciplinary strategy to optimize patient care in an individualized, multidisciplinary way. Despite the benefits of ERAS protocol implementation, the role of ERAS in pediatric spine surgery remains understudied.

Paracondylar processes are typically identified incidentally and vary in size from a small protuberance to an elongated process.
Observations: The authors present the first pediatric case of torticollis secondary to a congenital paracondylar process successfully treated with resection of the paracondylar process and sternocleidomastoid release.
Introduction: Sarcomas, a group of neoplasms comprising both tissue and bone soft tissue tumors, has an increasing prevalence in recent years. Prognosis significantly hinges on early detection, and if not detected early, may consequently metastasize. This review will be the first systematic review and meta-analysis characterizing the presentation and progression of brain metastases from bone and soft tissue cancers.

Methods: Our protocol consists of physical therapy and occupational therapy practitioners administering validated tests of gait, balance, and cognition before and after lumbar drain placement. Specific tests include: Timed "Up & Go", Tinetti Gait and Balance Assessment, Berg Balance Scale, Mini Mental Status Exam, Trail Making Test Part B, and the Rey Auditory and Visual Learning Test.
The increased incidence of spine surgery within the past decade has highlighted the importance of robust perioperative management to improve patient outcomes overall. Coronary artery disease is a common medical comorbidity present in the population of individuals who receive surgery for spinal pathology that is often treated with dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) after percutaneous coronary intervention. Discontinuation of DAPT before surgical intervention is typically indicated; however, contradictory evidence exists in the literature regarding the timing of DAPT use and discontinuation in the perioperative period.

With respect to neurosurgery, AR integrates preoperative and intraoperative imaging data to create an enriched surgical experience that has been shown to improve surgical planning, refine neuronavigation, and reduce operation time. In addition, AR has the potential to serve as a valuable training tool for neurosurgeons in a way that minimizes patient risk while facilitating comprehensive training opportunities.

However, few studies have compared expenses prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study evaluates the financial impact of COVID-19 on the neurosurgery residency application and identifies strategies that may alleviate the financial burden of prospective neurosurgery residents.

Introduction: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is clinically and pathologically heterogenous, with symptoms often refractory to first-line treatments. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) for the treatment of refractory OCD provides an opportunity to adjust and individualize neuromodulation targeting aberrant circuitry underlying OCD. The tailoring of DBS therapy may allow precision in symptom control based on patient-specific pathology.

IBD has been associated with a variety of neurologic manifestations including peripheral nerve involvement, increased risk of thrombotic, demyelinating and events. Furthermore, an evolving association between IBD and neurodegenerative disorders has been recognized, and early data suggests an increased risk of these disorders in patients diagnosed with IBD.

Although FDA-approved treatments, including dopaminergic pharmacotherapy, deep brain stimulation, and rehabilitation, have some benefits in improving gait dysfunction, a fair amount of advanced PD patients can develop a disability, social isolation, and high mortality and morbidity. Recently, clinicians and scientists have applied music to clinical therapy, namely music therapy.

There are few studies that report the impact of oral medication therapy on GM, however, there are even fewer studies that discuss the impact of other treatments such as device assisted therapies (DAT) including deep brain stimulation (DBS), levodopa-carbidopa intestinal gel infusion (LCIG) and photobiomodulation (PBM) and how these might impact GM. Here, we review the literature and summarize findings of the potential contributions of GM to the heterogenous clinical response to pharmaceutical therapies among individuals with PD.

Although a variety of therapeutic strategies have been employed for the treatment of gliomas, there is increasing evidence that suggests ligand-gated ion channels (LGICs) can serve as a valuable biomarker and diagnostic tool in the pathogenesis of gliomas. Various LGICs, including P2X, SYT16, and PANX2, have the potential to become altered in the pathogenesis of glioma, which can disrupt the homeostatic activity of neurons, microglia, and astrocytes, further exacerbating the symptoms and progression of glioma.

Levodopa-induced dyskinesia (LID) is one of the common motor complications arising in PD patients on chronic treatment with levodopa. In this article, we retrospectively evaluated the outcomes of LID with the Unified Dyskinesia Rating Scale (UDysRS) in patients who underwent DBS in multiple centers with a GPi or an STN target.
