Glycans play a major role in biological cell-cell recognition and signal transduction but have found limited application in biosensors due to glycan/lectin promiscuity; multiple proteins are capable of binding to the same native glycan. Here, site-specific fluorination is used to introduce protein-glycan selectivity, and this is coupled with an electrochemical detection method to generate a novel biosensor platform. 3F-lacto--biose glycofluoroform is installed onto polymer tethers, which are subsequently immobilised onto gold screen printed electrodes, providing a non-fouling surface.

Background: Strength deficits may play a central role in the severity of balance, mobility, and endurance impairments in lower limb prosthesis users. A body of literature detailing the scope and specifics of muscle weakness in lower limb prosthesis users is emerging, but has yet to be summarized. A synopsis of strength deficits, and their impact on functional abilities in lower limb prosthesis users, may inform rehabilitation and research needs.

Observations: The patient had a chronic 1355 μm FTMH and best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of 2 logMAR units after two unsuccessful attempts to close the macular hole. Following a 25-gauge vitrectomy, a 2-disc diameter neurosensory autograft from the supertemporal retina was mobilized and secured with perfluoro-N-octane (PFO) tamponade.
We study the higher-order Fermi-liquid relations of Kondo systems for arbitrary impurity-electron fillings, extending the many-body quantum theoretical approach of Yamada and Yosida. It includes, partly, a microscopic clarification of the related achievements based on Nozières' phenomenological description: Filippone, Moca, von Delft, and Mora [Phys. Rev.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe low temperature behavior of a Fermi liquid can be described in terms of quasiparticle excitations that are in 1-1 correspondence with those of the noninteracting system. Because of adiabatic continuity, the Landau parameters, which describe the interactions between the quasiparticles, must evolve continuously as the interactions are turned on and be described by a set of flow equations. For strongly correlated electron systems it is not possible to follow this flow in perturbation theory when the interactions become strong.

Within Ireland, information on mouthguard use and policy is limited. The extent of dental trauma experienced by children during sport is also unclear.

The resulting cumulant for the current distribution in the particle-hole symmetric case shows that spin-triplet and spin-singlet pairs of quasiparticles are formed in the current due to the Hund's rule coupling, and these pairs enhance the current fluctuations. In the fully screened higher-spin Kondo limit, the Fano factor takes a value F(b)=(9M+6)/(5M+4) determined by the orbital degeneracy M.

We find the emergence of strong correlations and universality on the approach to the quantum critical points of a two-impurity Anderson model. The two impurities are coupled by an interimpurity exchange interaction J and direct interaction U{12} and are hybridized with separate conduction channels. The low energy behavior is described in terms of renormalized parameters.

Thirteen subjects were identified--nine males and four females. Galway was the main locus for cleft surgical referral and care, with 10 subjects receiving treatment by the same surgeon.

The anomalous low energy behaviour observed in metals with strong electron correlation, such as in the heavy fermion materials, is believed to arise from the scattering of the itinerant electrons with low energy spin fluctuations. In systems with magnetic impurities this scattering leads to the Kondo effect and a low energy renormalized energy scale, the Kondo temperature T(K). It has been generally assumed that these low energy scales can only be accessed by a non-perturbative approach due to the strength of the local inter-electron interactions.

We apply this approach to the Anderson-Holstein impurity model to calculate the ground state probability density ρ(x) for the displacement x of the local oscillator. From this density we can deduce an effective local potential for the oscillator and compare its form with that obtained from a semiclassical approximation as a function of the coupling strength.

Relatively little information exists on this syndrome within the dental literature despite the fact that midface hypoplasia and maxillary hypodontia are classical presenting features of this syndrome. This is a case report of a 7-year-old Caucasian female with ARS who presented with significant ocular and dental anomalies.

One reason for this may be an overestimate of the bioavailability of riboflavin from foods, about which relatively little is known.
Objective: We aimed to quantify the bioavailability of riboflavin from milk and spinach by using stable-isotope labels and a urinary monitoring technique and by a plasma appearance method based on kinetic modeling.
We show that a strongly renormalized band of polaronic quasiparticle excitations is induced at the Fermi level of an interacting many-electron system on increasing the coupling of the electrons to local phonons. We give results for the local density of states at zero temperature both for the electrons and phonons. The polaronic quasiparticles satisfy Luttinger's theorem for all regimes considered, and their dispersion shows a kink similar to that observed experimentally in copper oxides.

This report describes severe complications following anterior and/or posterior intravaginal slingplasties employing a multifilament polypropylene mesh.
Methods: We describe the symptoms, findings, subsequent management, and outcome of 19 consecutive women who have been referred with complications following anterior (n = 11) and/or posterior intravaginal slingplasty (n = 13) employing the multifilament polypropylene tape.
The hypothalamus appears to be more responsive to ghrelin and growth hormone secretagogues (GHS) in fasting, as reflected by a two- to three-fold increase in the number of cells detected that express Fos protein in the arcuate nucleus, in 48-h fasted rats compared to fed controls. Moreover, this increased hypothalamic responsiveness to GHS in fasting is regulated by the central action of exogenous leptin and insulin, although it is unknown whether these hormones mediate the changes in hypothalamic responsiveness to GHS associated with the fasting/fed state. In the present study, we show that refeeding with normal rat chow for only 2 h at the end of a 48-h fast reversed the potentiation of the Fos response to GHRP-6 observed in fasted rats.

This hypothesis has been supported by in vitro studies showing that glial iNOS expression results in toxic NO concentrations (near 1 microm). To investigate the relevance of such findings, experiments were carried out ex vivo on optic nerves from rats with exacerbated experimental allergic encephalomyelitis, a model of multiple sclerosis.

Aim: Retrospective analysis of long-term results of a simplified 'Burch type' colposuspension.
Methods: A retrospective chart review, with follow-up through postal questionnaires sent in September 2000, of all 374 patients who had a simplified colposuspension between 1985 and 1998, with additional total abdominal hysterectomy in 103 patients. Apelin is a peptide recently identified as a ligand for the APJ receptor, a receptor located in tissues such as the small intestine and in the hypothalamus. Apelin has been detected in adipose tissue, gastrointestinal tract, heart and stomach. Recent reports suggest a role for apelin in the regulation of blood pressure and the control of body fluid homeostasis.

Activation of arcuate neurons by ghrelin and ghrelin mimetics (the growth hormone secretagogues) is augmented in 48-h-fasted rats compared with fed rats, as reflected by a greater number of cells expressing Fos protein in response to administration of the same maximally effective dose. Here we sought to determine whether this increased responsiveness in fasting might reflect or be influenced by low levels of circulating satiety factors such as leptin or insulin.

This nonperturbative method reveals significant precursor effects to the gap formation at intermediate coupling strengths. The emergence of a soft phonon mode and very strong lattice fluctuations can be understood in terms of Kondo-like physics due to the development of a double-well structure in the effective potential for the ions.
