The likelihood ratio test is presented for testing the equality of two regression lines versus the ordered alternative that Line 1 lies above Line 2 on a prescribed finite interval of values of the independent variable. Homoscedastic normal errors are assumed. An application is discussed and data from it are used to illustrate the methodology.

Two-hundred-forty male pain patients were given the MMPI and an extensive pain history questionnaire. A hierarchical clustering procedure was used, and three distinct profiles emerged. One profile was essentially "normal," while a second profile revealed the "hypochondriasis" configuration, and a third was highly elevated on scales which reflect a "psychopathological" type of profile.

The records of 100 consecutive cases of subarachnoid hemorrhage due to ruptured aneurysm were reviewed to determine the incidence and the prognostic implications of seizures during the acute phase. Seizures occurred in 26% of the patients. Sixty-three per cent of the seizures occurred near the onset of the initial hemorrhage.

A two-stage analog of Kendall's distribution-free test for independence is presented. It is shown that the null-limiting joint distribution of the two-stage test statistics is bivariate normal. Critical values are given for alpha = .

The pressure profile of the upper esophageal sphincter was characterized in nine normal subjects. Directionally oriented intraluminal pressures were recorded, at 0.5-cm intervals over a 6-cm segment that encompassed the sphincter, by a high-fidelity low-compliance recording system.

Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) was measured as an indicator of glucose control in 180 children and adolescents with diabetes mellitus who received two daily injections of insulin as part of a highly structured treatment program. A total of 426 HbA1c determinations was made in the group of 180 patients. HbA1c values were elevated in most patients despite the aggressive treatment.

Glucagon inhibits gastric acid secretion and increases the negativity of gastric mucosal potential difference (PD) in man. To test the hypothesis that the increased negativity of PD after glucagon in man could be due to decreased parietal cell canalicular membrane area, a quantitative ultrastructural analysis was carried out. Four healthy volunteers with normal gastric mucosa were submitted to biopsy before and 20 minutes after intravenous injection of 2 mg glucagon (G).

Endoscopy was done in 82 patients with rheumatic disease who were receiving chronic aspirin therapy. Fifty-eight patients were taking at least eight aspirin tablets daily for 3 or more months; 24 patients were taking, in addition to the aspirin, a maximum of one other antiinflammatory, nonsteroidal medication. Endoscopy in 45 normal subjects not taking aspirin showed no ulcers or erosions and a 4% incidence of gastric erythema.

The concerns of medical and community officials about responsible pet ownership have increased. Before a practical solution can be found for irresponsible ownership and community health problems associated with pet populations, the public's attitudes on issues related to responsible pet ownership must be determined. Such issues include attitudes on dog and cat overpopulation, potential public health problems associated with pet populations, and methods of controlling pet populations and stray animals.

The purpose of this paper is to define criteria used for classifying patients into varying degrees of diabetic control and to verify that children with diabetes maintained in higher degrees of metabolic control do not have delayed growth and maturation. Growth records of 252 children with insulin-dependent diabetes who have been under continuous observation in our clinic at three- to five-month intervals for at least three years and up to 16 years have been individually reviewed and analyzed. All children received two daily injections of a mixture of two parts of an intermediate to one part of regular insulin and were instructed to eat structured meals of high-quality selected foods.

Reinfusion of a patient's own blood through a hemodialysis coil causes neutrophilia, reaching a peak less than 1 hour after starting the blood reinfusion and returning to baseline count over the next few hours, resulting from a transient release of neutrophils from the bone marrow. This report gives data regarding the double clinical utility of so stimulating a patient's marrow. First, we found that the magnitude of this neutrophilia was a good measure of marrow neutrophil reserves, as determined by comparison with the marrow mature neutrophil cellularity.
