Article Synopsis
  • A study checks if not using compression after varicose vein treatment (via ablation) has similar long-term results compared to using compression, following a previous trial's short-term results.
  • After 27 months, 64.6% of patients with compression and 63% without it were checked, with both groups showing similar rates of vein closure (80.7% vs. 79.3%).
  • Quality of life measures also showed no significant differences between the groups, indicating that for most patients, post-procedural compression might not be necessary for effective treatment outcomes.

Background: Patients undergoing open abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair have a high risk of incisional hernia. Heterogeneity in recommendations regarding prophylactic mesh reinforcement between scientific society guidelines reflects the lack of sufficient data, with the Society for Vascular Surgery making no recommendation on methods for abdominal wall closure. We aimed to synthesize the most current evidence on mesh versus primary suture abdominal wall closure after open AAA repair.

Background: Spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a devastating cerebrovascular disease with high morbidity and mortality. Branching pattern of the lenticulostriate arteries from the middle cerebral artery makes them susceptible to formation of microaneurysms, which have been implicated in hypertensive ICH. Recurrence of hematoma due to delayed development of pseudoaneurysm after initial surgical evacuation is uncommon.

Viral protein 9 (VP9) is a non-structural protein of white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) highly expressed during the early stage of infection. The crystal structure of VP9 suggests that the polymers of VP9 dimers resemble a DNA mimic, but its function remains elusive. In this study, we demonstrated that VP9 impedes histones binding to DNA via single-molecule manipulation.

In response to the increasing incidence of certain oral and oropharyngeal cancers, the Society of Behavioral Medicine (SBM) calls on healthcare providers and legislators to expand awareness of oral and oropharyngeal cancer risk factors, increase early detection, and support policies that increase utilization of dental services. SBM supports the American Dental Association's 2017 guideline for evaluating potentially malignant oral cavity disorders and makes the following recommendations to healthcare providers and legislators. We encourage healthcare providers and healthcare systems to treat oral exams as a routine part of patient examination; communicate to patients about oral/oropharyngeal cancers and risk factors; encourage HPV vaccination for appropriate patients based on recommendations from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices; support avoidance of tobacco use and reduction of alcohol consumption; and follow the current recommendations for evaluating potentially malignant oral cavity lesions.

Iridovirid infection is associated with the catastrophic loss in aquaculture industry and the population decline of wild amphibians and reptiles, but none of the iridovirid life cycles have been well explored. Here, we report the detailed visualization of the life cycle of Singapore grouper iridovirus (SGIV) in grouper cells by cryo-electron microscopy (cryoEM) and tomography (ET). EM imaging revealed that SGIV viral particles have an outer capsid layer, and the interaction of this layer with cellular plasma membrane initiates viral entry.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV), a non-enveloped, positive-sense, single-stranded RNA virus, is a major cause of enteric hepatitis. Classified into the family Hepeviridae, HEV comprises four genotypes (genotypes 1-4), which belong to a single serotype. We describe a monoclonal antibody (mAb), 8G12, which equally recognizes all four genotypes of HEV, with ∼ 2.

We demonstrate, for the first time, that Singapore Grouper Iridovirus (SGIV) can successfully infect a Zebrafish cell line. Combined with the recent availability of the complete zebrafish (danio rerio) genome, this provides an opportunity to investigate virus-host interactions at the molecular level. Using iTRAQ labeling and two-dimensional LC/MS/MS quantitative proteomics, 157 zebrafish proteins exhibiting significant alterations in expression levels following SGIV infection were identified.

Mature HIV-1 viral particles assemble as a fullerene configuration comprising p24 capsid hexamers, pentamers and dimers. In this paper, we report the X-ray crystal structures of the p24 protein from natural HIV-1 strain (BMJ4) in complex with Fab A10F9, which recognizes a conserved epitope in the C-terminal domain of the BMJ4 p24 protein. Our structures reveal a novel shoulder-to-shoulder p24 dimerization mode that is mediated by an S-S bridge at C177.

Article Synopsis
  • Primitive fetal nucleated red blood cells (FNRBCs) are crucial for early embryonic development, but their protein functions remain largely unexplored due to limited availability for study.
  • A groundbreaking analysis using two-dimensional liquid chromatography and mass-spectrometry identified 273 proteins in FNRBCs, with 48.7% being membrane proteins, including 12 that are unique to FNRBCs.
  • Findings suggest potential surface antigens for isolating FNRBCs from maternal blood, paving the way for noninvasive prenatal diagnostics and enhancing understanding of these cells’ biology.

Pin1 regulates a subset of phosphoproteins by isomerizing phospho-Ser/Thr-Pro motifs via a 'post-phosphorylation' mechanism. Here, we characterize TR3 as a novel Pin1 substrate, and the mitogenic function of TR3 depends on Pin1-induced isomerization. There are at least three phospho-Ser-Pro motifs on TR3 that bind to Pin1.

Singapore grouper iridovirus (SGIV), a major pathogen of concern for grouper aquaculture, has a double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) genome with 162 predicted open reading frames, for which a total of 62 SGIV proteins have been identified. One of these, ORF158L, bears no sequence homology to any other known protein. Knockdown of orf158L using antisense morpholino oligonucleotides resulted in a significant decrease in virus yield in grouper embryonic cells.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) causes acute hepatitis in humans, predominantly by contamination of food and water, and is characterized by jaundice and flu-like aches and pains. To date, no vaccines are commercially available to prevent the disease caused by HEV. Previously, we showed that a monoclonal antibody, 8C11, specifically recognizes a neutralizing conformational epitope on HEV genotype I.
