The Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) as the only lipid-associated envelope protein of the Hepatitis B virus (HBV) acts as cellular attachment and entry mediator of HBV making it the main target of neutralizing antibodies to provide HBV immunity after infection or vaccination. Despite its central role in inducing protective immunity, there is however a surprising lack of comparative studies examining different HBsAgs and their ability to detect anti-HBs antibodies. On the contrary, various time-consuming complex HBsAg production protocols have been established, which result in structurally and functionally insufficiently characterized HBsAg.

Gene drive technology has the potential to address major biological challenges. Well-studied homing suppression drives have been shown to be highly efficient in Anopheles mosquitoes, but for other organisms, lower rates of drive conversion prevent elimination of the target population. To tackle this issue, we propose a gene drive design that has two targets: a drive homing site where drive conversion takes place, and a distant site where cleavage induces population suppression.

Perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) and perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acids (PFSAs) belong to the group of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), which may accumulate in humans due to their limited excretion. To provide more insights into the active renal excretion potential of PFASs in humans, this work investigated in vitro the transport of three PFCAs (PFHpA, PFOA, PFNA) and three PFSAs (PFBS, PFHxS and PFOS) using OAT1-, OAT2- or OAT3-transduced human embryonic kidney (HEK) cells. Only PFHpA and PFOA showed clear uptake in OAT1-transduced HEK cells, while no transport was observed for PFASs in OAT2-transduced HEK cells.

Uric acid induces radical oxygen species formation, endothelial inflammation, and endothelial dysfunction which contributes to the progression of atherosclerosis. Febuxostat inhibits BCRP- and allopurinol stimulates MRP4-mediated uric acid efflux in human embryonic kidney cells. We hypothesized that endothelial cells express uric acid transporters that regulate intracellular uric acid concentration and that modulation of these transporters by febuxostat and allopurinol contributes to their different impact on cardiovascular mortality.

Orthologs of breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP/ABCG2), an ATP-binding cassette (ABC) efflux transmembrane transporter, are present in several species. The list of compounds known to interact with BCRP is growing, and many questions remain concerning species-specific variations in substrate specificity and affinity and the potency of inhibitors. In fungi, fusion between individuals leads to localized cell death, a phenomenon termed heterokaryon incompatibility. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) from Schistosoma mansoni has peculiar properties for a eukaryotic LDH. Schistosomal LDH (SmLDH) isolated from schistosomes, and the recombinantly expressed protein, are strongly inhibited by ATP, which is neutralized by fructose-1,6-bisphosphate (FBP). In the conserved FBP/anion binding site we identified two residues in SmLDH (Val187 and Tyr190) that differ from the conserved residues in LDHs of other eukaryotes, but are identical to conserved residues in FBP-sensitive prokaryotic LDHs.

Case: We present the unique case of a 73-year-old man who was treated 50 years ago with a hemiarthroplasty (HA) for avascular necrosis after a femoral neck fracture (FNF) of his left hip and who has developed only mild osteoarthritis since and has reported satisfactory clinical and functional outcomes with no acetabular erosion.

Conclusion: HA for FNFs can provide durable long-term results and can, therefore, be considered as an option in the treatment of FNFs in younger patients. We describe a case with good results after 50 years, which, to our knowledge, is the longest reported follow-up of HA.
