Pityriasis rosea (PR) is a self-limited exanthem associated with the endogenous systemic reactivation of human herpesvirus (HHV)-6 and HHV-7. The disease typically begins with a single erythematous patch on the trunk (herald patch), followed by a secondary eruption of smaller papulosquamous lesions. Rarely, the herald patch may be the only cutaneous manifestation of PR.

Article Synopsis
  • Pityriasis rosea (PR) is a skin condition that usually gets better on its own, often linked to reactivated human herpesviruses, causing mild rashes and itchiness.
  • Traditional treatment focuses on reassuring patients to rest, but severe cases may require medication, prompting a study comparing various treatments.
  • The analysis found that oral steroids and a combo with antihistamines were effective for itch relief, while acyclovir was the most effective for improving rash symptoms, making it the best option for more serious PR cases.

Jellyfish stings can cause acute inflammatory skin lesions that may hesitate in keloids. Pulsed dye laser (PDL) represents one of the most effective treatments for newly developed keloids. Aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of PDL on newly developed keloids specifically induced by jellyfish stings in pediatric patients.

  • Lichen striatus (LS) is a self-resolving skin condition primarily affecting children, characterized by a linear pattern and mainly seen in females, with an average patient age of 3.8 years.
  • A review of 27 articles involving 440 patients suggests that LS may be linked to immune system dysregulation, where cytotoxic T-cells attack skin cells after losing immune tolerance.
  • It is mostly diagnosed clinically based on its unique characteristics, with a typical duration of about 9.5 months, and treatment is rarely needed, highlighting the benign nature of the condition while also pointing out the need for more research in this area.

  • - Zinc deficiency is a critical health issue for children, leading to a variety of health problems and conditions that can be either acquired or inherited.
  • - This overview highlights the different symptoms, diagnostic difficulties, and treatment options for zinc deficiency in children, including issues like skin problems, slow growth, immune dysfunction, and neurological effects.
  • - Addressing zinc deficiency requires collaboration among healthcare professionals such as pediatricians, dermatologists, geneticists, and nutritionists to improve care and outcomes for affected children.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination represents a milestone in primary prevention of sexually transmitted infections. However, little is known about its possible effects on already established HPV infections. We report the case of a 9-year-old immunosuppressed girl with refractory warts, successfully treated with the nonavalent-HPV vaccine and review the literature about the therapeutic effects of HPV vaccination on benign HPV-induced epithelial proliferations in immunocompetent and immunosuppressed patients.

  • - Herpes zoster (HZ) occurs when the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), which causes chickenpox, reactivates due to weakened immune systems, particularly in the elderly or those with immune deficiencies.
  • - About 1 in 3 people will experience HZ in their lifetime, and 30% of these individuals may develop post-herpetic neuralgia, a painful complication following the skin rash.
  • - The text discusses the risk of HZ and post-herpetic neuralgia in patients with various dermatological conditions and outlines vaccination options and recommendations for preventing HZ in these high-risk groups.

  • The study highlights an increase in syphilis cases, particularly among men who have sex with men, in high-income countries over the past few decades.
  • A retrospective analysis of 307 patients diagnosed with syphilis revealed that 25.8% exhibited atypical manifestations, particularly in the secondary stage, such as annular lesions and itchy erythematous plaques.
  • Atypical manifestations were linked to factors like homosexual orientation, syphilis reinfection, and higher VDRL titers, emphasizing the need for awareness as they can complicate diagnosis and treatment.

  • Acne fulminans (AF) is a severe type of acne characterized by painful, bleeding pustules and ulcerations, which may involve systemic symptoms and lab abnormalities.* -
  • A review of 98 relevant articles revealed that different variants of AF present unique clinical features, with androgen-induced AF showing more nodules and cysts, while "miscellaneous AF" tends to have more ulcerations and erosions.* -
  • Understanding the different presentations of AF is important for developing personalized treatment plans, leading to a proposed classification based on associated factors.*

Introduction: Diffuse Melanosis Cutis (DMC) is a rare and late complication of metastatic malignant melanoma (MM) characterized by progressive pigmentation of skin and sometimes mucous membranes. The distinctive feature is the widespread and progressive deposition of melanin precursors in the dermis.

Objectives: The purpose of this review is to define the clinical and demographic features of DMC and to promote a deeper insight into the clinical manifestation, histological findings, and pathophysiology behind DMC.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines are preventive measures to decrease HPV infection rates. Knowledge of their efficacy as treatment options for anogenital warts (AGWs) and oral warts (OWs) is limited. To evaluate the efficacy of HPV vaccinations in recalcitrant AGWs and OWs (lesions persisting more than 6 months despite conventional treatments), we compared a group of patients treated with standard therapies plus an HPV vaccine with a group of patients treated with standard therapies only.

Corticophobia, fear of applying topical corticosteroids (TCSs), is a rising issue in industrialized countries, despite the actual safety of TCSs for atopic dermatitis (AD). Patients attending the Pediatric Dermatology Unit for skin examination were screened for AD. AD patients were included, and data were collected.

We present the case of a 4-year-old boy with annular, pruritic macules on the face who did not respond to the application of topical immunosuppressive therapy for atopic dermatitis. In this case report, we emphasize how pruritic annular macules that are not responsive to immunosuppressants should always be suspected of being tinea incognita.

Spitzoid lesions are challenging melanocytic lesions comprising benign, intermediate, and malignant lesions. In this study, we aimed to analyze the diagnostic accuracy of clinical and dermatoscopical evaluations of pediatric spitzoid ear lesions. We collected and analyzed, clinically, dermatoscopically, and histologically, pediatric spitzoid ear lesions.

Article Synopsis
  • Spitzoid lesions in children include mainly benign Spitz nevi (82%), with a smaller percentage of atypical Spitz tumors (17%) and rare cases of Spitz melanoma (1%).
  • Histopathological and dermatoscopic analyses reveal correlations between lesion characteristics and benign or atypical/malignant histology, highlighting that certain visual features can aid in diagnosis.
  • The study emphasizes caution with atypical Spitz tumors due to their potential malignancy, advocating for careful assessment in pediatric patients.
