The ageing of society is driving an enormous increase in fragility fracture incidence and imposing a massive burden on patients, their families, health systems and societies globally. Disrupting the status quo has therefore become an obligation and a necessity. Initiated by the Fragility Fracture Network (FFN) at a "Presidents' Roundtable" during the 5 FFN Global Congress in 2016 several leading organisations agreed that a global multidisciplinary and multiprofessional collaboration, resulting in a Global Call to Action (CtA), would be the right step forward to improve the care of people presenting with fragility fractures.

The challenge of caring for patients with fragility fractures is particularly acute for nursing teams who are in short supply and work with patients following fracture on a 24 h basis, coordinating as well as providing complex care. This paper considers the role of nurses within the orthogeriatric team and highlights the value of effective nursing care in patient outcomes. It explores the nature of nursing for patients with fragility fracture with a focus on the provision of safe and effective care and the coordination of care across the interdisciplinary team.

Background: Fragility hip fracture in older adults often has poor outcomes, but these outcomes can be improved with attention to specific quality care indicators.

Purpose: The International Collaboration of Orthopaedic Nursing (ICON) developed an audit process to identify the extent to which internationally accepted nursing quality care indicators for older adults with fragility hip fracture are reflected in policies, protocols, and processes guiding acute care.

Methods: A data abstraction tool was created for each of 12 quality indicators.

The National Hip Fracture Database (NHFD) is a key clinical governance programme for staff working in trauma wards across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It uses prospectively collected information about the 65,000 people who present with hip fracture each year, and links these with information about the quality of care and outcome for each individual. The NHFD can, therefore, provide a picture of the care offered to frail older people with this injury - people who, between them, occupy nearly half of inpatient trauma beds.
